Book excerpt: Single particle inclusive spectra are presented for particle production in Si+Al and Si+Au reactions at the nucleus-nucleon center-of-mass rapidity for projectiles incident at 14.6 A{center dot}GeV/c. The invariant cross sections are all well described by an exponential dependence in the transverse mass m(up tack). An analysis in terms of different components in p{sub {perpendicular}}2 shows the importance of resonance production and decay as a reaction mechanism at AGS energies.

Book excerpt: In the last few years, studies of heavy-ion collisions at high energy have produced new insight into the production of nuclear matter at high baryon density and temperature. While heavy-ion reactions at AGS energy are now well characterized, to clarify and test our understanding of the reaction mechanism of these collisions it is important to study the underlying processes involved. The study of p-A collisions should be particularly useful to understand in which way A-A collisions differ from the simple superposition of nucleon-nucleon collisions and it may be a specially severe test of the validity of the models in describing the transition from a single collision problem to a thermodynamic problem mainly defined by a few observables. In particular, p-A collisions should be sensitive to the way nucleons propagate in the nuclear medium and thus provide more insight on: the importance of rescattering, the stopping power of normal nuclear matter, and possibly on the influence of the nuclear matter density and temperature on the hadronic cross sections. In this paper we present the transverse energy and charged particle multiplicity distributions in proton induced collisions on Al, and Pb targets at 14.6GeV/c. These data have been obtained as part of the E814 collaboration and are thus immediately comparable to similar data obtained for 28Si and Au induced reactions at the same energy.

Book excerpt: The STAR collaboration at RHIC presents measurements of J/[psi] → e+e− at mid-rapidity and high transverse momentum (p{sub T} > 5 GeV/c) in p+p and central Cu+Cu collisions at √sNN = 200 GeV. The inclusive J/[psi] production cross section for Cu+Cu collisions is found to be consistent at high p{sub T} with the binary collision-scaled cross section for p+p collisions, in contrast to previous measurements at lower p{sub T}, where a suppression of J/[psi] production is observed relative to the expectation from binary scaling. Azimuthal correlations of J/[psi] with charged hadrons in p+p collisions provide an estimate of the contribution of B-meson decays to J/[psi] production of 13% ± 5%.

Book excerpt: The differential cross-section d[sigma]/dx[sub F] for J/[psi] production in 800 GeV proton-nucleus collisions has been measured in the kinematic range 0.30 [le] x[sub F] [le] 0.95 and x[sub F] [lt] p[perpendicular] [lt] 5 GeV through the decay mode J/[psi] [yields] [mu][sup +][mu][sup [minus]]. The nuclear dependence of J/[psi] production over this range was measured using copper and beryllium targets. The differential cross sections are in good agreement with the predictions of the symbolical parton duality model. The data show no evidence for an intrinsic charm component in the proton. The ratio of the differential cross sections for copper and beryllium shows a suppression of J/[psi] production in copper which increases with increasing x[sub F].

Book excerpt: Multiplicity distributions of particles created in p-p collisions with E/sub lab/ = 50 to 200 GeV are shown to contain at least one Poisson component which becomes dominant at multiplicities k greater than or equal to 1.5 (k). The mean values of both this component and of the (relatively low multiplicity residue) increase like E/sub lab/12; the relative weight of the Poisson component decreases approximately like E/sub lab/−° 3. If these trends continue beyond the available accelerator energies, one might expect the mean multiplicity to approach an E/sub lab/12 law beyond 10 TeV. 7 refs.

The measurements were performed at the CERN ISR using the Axial Field Spectrometer. Trigger particle ratios, sigma(.pi./sup + -/)/ sigma(all/sup + -/), sigma(K/sup + -/) and sigma(p/sup + -/)/sigma(all/sup + -/) are presented for p/sub T/ from 5 GeV/c to 8 GeV/c. In addition sigma(.pi./sup + -/)/sigma(all/sup + -/) is presented in the p/sub T/ region from 2.5 GeV/c to 4.5 GeV/c. The charge compensation in the hemisphere containing the trigger particle is shown to depend strongly on the identity of the trigger particle and on the identity of the associated particles. 13 references.

The antiproton data presented cover the range of transverse momentum from 0.3 to 1.2 GeV/c and lab rapidities from 0.9 to 1.7. The extracted rapidity densities, transverse mass slopes, and particle ratios from minimum bias and central Si + A collisions are compared to those measured in p + p and p + A collisions.
