Book excerpt: The present studies focused on 1) the academic outcomes of high-achieving students at a four-year, comprehensive research institution, and 2) the influence of achievement goal orientation on high-achieving community college students' decision to participate in a post-secondary honors program. While correlational studies have been conducted to compare differences in academic achievement between high-achieving students who participate in honors and those who do not, there is a gap in the scholarship regarding quantitative studies to estimate the magnitude of effect for participation in honors education on academic achievement. Further, research findings support non-cognitive factors such as academic self-concept (ASC) and self-efficacy that influence the decision to participate in honors, yet little research has been conducted regarding the influence of achievement goal orientation on students' decisions to enroll in an honors learning environment. The goals of the studies were to determine 1) the extent to which participating in a post-secondary honors program affects academic achievement and 2) the extent to which achievement goal orientation influences students' participation in a community college honors program. The first, an observational study, utilized archival data collected from three cohorts of high-achieving students at a four-year, comprehensive research institution. Big-Fish-Little-Pond-Effect predicts that students who opt out of participating in honors will outperform students enrolled in the honors program on academic achievement as measured by GPA. Quantitative and demographic data were collected and propensity score matching on observable variables was used to match students in the intervention group (honors) to the comparison group (non-honors) to control for confounders and to estimate better the magnitude of effect for the intervention of honors on academic outcomes. One-way analysis of covariance (ANCOVA) was used to assess differences on cumulative grade point average (GPA) between the two groups using the propensity score as the covariate. It was anticipated that high-achieving students who participate in a post-secondary honors program would earn a lower cumulative GPA than their non-honors counterparts as an effect of their participation in the program. The second study, a survey, measured the four constructs of achievement goal orientation within the 2 x 2 model (mastery-approach, mastery-avoidance, performance-approach, performance-avoidance) across high-achieving students at a community college. Logistic regression was used to determine the constructs' accuracy in predicting students' likelihood of participating in honors. The data were collected from 400 students in an online version of the Achievement Goal Questionnaire-Revised. It was anticipated that the likelihood of participating in post-secondary honors would be greater for students who adopted a mastery-approach goal orientation.

Such sorting clearly sets up the potential for exclusion, based on the attainment ideals and on the modes of selection. Ideals of inclusion suggest diversity, and those of equity, by reference to impartiality, suggest freedom from bias. Honors education, which celebrates excellence, and references “honor” and all that word and concept infers, heightens and promotes the principled recognition of attainment, giving rise to questions of diversity, equity and inclusion. The Organization for Economic Co-Operation and Development (OECD), in its Ten Steps to Equity in Education, notes that inclusion is intertwined with fairness. How can honors education—and in the case of the discussions in this book, largely honors in US higher education—promote fairness, be diverse, and support equity? If it does not do so, how can it at all claim to be offering a principled version of what the National Collegiate Honors Council (USA) says are “opportunities for measurably broader, deeper, and more complex learning-centered and learner-directed experiences for its students”? In 2015, the National Society for Minorities in Honors (www.nsfmih.org) was launched in the USA to specifically explore, support and promote diversity, equity and inclusion in and across honors colleges and programs. The first annual NSFMIH conference was held at Oakland University, Michigan. This book began at that inaugural conference, and has been enhanced by enthusiastic contributions beyond that event as well.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this research was to explore the paths taken by individuals who hold administrative positions in post-secondary honors education programs. The research sought common professional and educational experiences that current honors education program administrators believe prepared them for the position. This study included the following: a review of higher education administration and honors education administration literature, criteria listed in job vacancy postings for the position of honors education program administrators at selected institutions, suggestions made in career path literature for pursuing positions in higher education administration; a methods section, a presentation of the interview content with current administrators of honors education programs regarding the career paths that led to their present positions, and discussion and implications that arose from the results. This study addressed four research questions which resulted in the following conclusions: (a) education and training of participants was varied, (b) maintain dual roles, advocating for the program, and working across disciplines were cited as challenges of the position, (c) working with students and interdisciplinary curriculum were cited as rewards of the position, and (d) the majority of participants plan to remain in honors rather than pursue other administrative positions. Participants indicated that someone planning to accept the role of honors administrator should have a commitment to and enjoy the following: (a) building interdisciplinary relationships with administrators and faculty from every department, (b) building mentoring relationships with students from every disciplines, (c) and building innovative, creative, highly visible programs that span the entire campus were some of the criteria cited by the participants as beneficial to anyone. As a result of this research the following emergent themes related to honors administration were identified: (a) the purpose of honors administration in regard to administrative and faculty interdisciplinary relationships and student relationships; and (b) the path to honors administration in regard to professional and educational networking, the motivation to enter as well as to remain in the position, and the professional and educational experiences that prepared individuals for the position. Book excerpt: This qualitative study fills a gap in the research the lived experiences of Students of Color in racially diverse honors programs by illuminating the experiences of 12 Students of Color enrolled in a racially diverse honors program. Enrollment in an honors program has been demonstrated to be beneficial to promoting a sense of belonging for college students. However, prior to this study, little research has been done on the experiences of Students of Color in an honors program that is racially diverse. Using sense of belonging for college students (Strayhorn, 2019) as a theoretical framework allowed for several themes to emerge organically after coding and analyzing participant responses, including academic challenge and prestige, community and friendship, suggestions for improvement, and influence of race on the experience. While most of the responses were similar for three of the themes, the theme of influence of race on the experience had a clear division between the responses of the male participants and the female participants. The female participants expressed concerns about additional pressures that they faced due to the intersectionality of their identities as females and Students of Color. The male participants, however, did not share many of these concerns. This was the most important finding for the study. Implications for research include further research on the intersectionality of racial identity and gender identity and how it influences the lived experiences for students in honors programs. Implications for policy include continued funding for honors programs at the post secondary level, and increased options for gifted and talented education options for Students of Color in the K-12 sector. Implications for practice include intentionally recruiting Students of Color to honors programs, as well as providing programming and support for Students of Color enrolled in honors programs. This study affirmed the use of the sense of belonging for college students theoretical framework for studying students in honors program. The findings of this study in particular connected with four of the seven components of the theoretical framework, illustrating the usefulness of the theory in studying the lived experiences of Students of Color in a racially diverse honors program.

Book excerpt: The Honors Program at Northern State University (South Dakota) is an ongoing, enriched program for academically talented and highly motivated students. Its purposes are to (1) stimulate creativity, intellectual curiosity, and critical evaluation of ideas and behavior; (2) enhance skills in critical research, writing, and speaking; and (3) develop capacity for independent learning. High school seniors with an American College Testing Program score of 24 or above and ranking in or near the top 25% of their graduating class are invited to participate, and currently-enrolled university students with a grade point average of 3.25 or above or who can otherwise demonstrate a commitment to the program's goals are encouraged to apply for admission. Eighteen credit hours are required for program graduation, including an honors thesis of up to 6 credit hours and up to 6 hours of honors work in connection with regularly-scheduled upper division courses in the student's major. The remaining credits are taken in elective honors courses. Over 100 students have participated in the program in four years. Problems preventing the program from achieving its goals and potential include a low completion rate, chronic faculty shortage in areas of heaviest demand, and administrative policy concerning faculty participation and workload.
