Download or read book The Prophetic Church written by Andrew Meszaros and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2016-10-06 with total page 285 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Prophetic Church: History and Doctrinal Development in John Henry Newman and Yves Congar is a historical and a systematic account of tradition, doctrinal development, and the theology of history, with a particular focus on the contributions of two modern Catholic figures, John Henry Newman (1801-1890) and Yves Congar (1904-1995). It is structured around two overarching themes: the 'subject' and 'history' in their relationship to doctrinal development. In addition, the thought of both Congar and Newman is interwoven throughout. Andrew Meszaros contextualizes and surveys Congar's reception of Newman. He explains the appeal of Newman and provides concrete evidence that would substantiate the nature and extent of Newman's influence on Congar, and thereby indirectly, on Vatican II. Meszaros also discusses doctrinal development with special attention to the subject and history. These treatments are based on the subjective and historical 'motors' or 'causes', as it were, of doctrinal development. He then develops a theology of doctrine and doctrinal development as inspired by Newman and Congar. In its reflection on the meaning of the Doctrinal Economy, this study contributes to the theological problem of history and doctrine by synthesizing and honing contributions of these two great thinkers of modern Catholic theology. It is precisely some of the key differences between Newman and Congar that make it theologically enriching to study them together.

Download or read book Conscience in the Parochial and Plain Sermons of John Henry Newman written by Fabio Attard and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A theme rightly associated with the personality of John Henry Newman is that of conscience. To the general reader, Newman's life story comes across as a witness of someone who followed the light of his conscience wherever it lead him. Yet, for those who decide to enter into a more familiar knowledge of the man, it will soon become clear that the meaning of conscience in his life goes much deeper than was originally thought. The main aim of this book is to discover what Newman understands by the term conscience in a particular period of his life, that which stretches from 1816 to 1843, his Anglican period. Within this particular period we find two sources that are intimately linked with one another. They are his sermons, the Parochial and Plain Sermons, and the varied biographical events as they come across to us through his Letters and Diaries. This book aims to find in these two sources the answers to the question: How is Newman's own understanding of conscience within the Parochial and Plain Sermons related to his personal life story? This question is dealt with from the standpoint of the biographical events and that of the written word. For this reason this volume is divided into two parts: The first examines the whole domain of the events, aiming to highlight the importance they hold for the theme of conscience. The second is directly concerned with Newman's writing on conscience within the Parochial and Plain Sermons. Contents: The discovery of Conscience 1816-1825; Advocacy of Conscience 1825-1832; Advocacy of Conscience 1833-1843; The reason behind the sermon; Analysis of the term Conscience; Conclusion.

Download or read book Christ Unabridged written by George Westhaver and published by SCM Press. This book was released on 2020-02-28 with total page 387 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The title ‘the Son of Man’ evokes the different aspects of the whole Christ: the humanity and divinity of Christ, his earthly ministry, his sacramental presence, and the eschatological consummation of his work. It is also a term of relationship, suggestive of both the relations constitutive of the life of the Holy Trinity, and also of the way that our knowing and loving the Son of Man is always an invitation to communion - with the Triune God, as the Body of Christ, and for the life of the world. Contributors to this collection explore some of the many registers of the mystery of Christ, both historically and thematically. Contributors include some of today’s leading theological thinkers, including N.T. Wright, Rowan Williams, Lydia Schumacher, Kallistos Ware and Oliver O’Donovan. With poetic reflections from Malcolm Guite. Chapters include: "Son of Man and the New Creation" (N.T. Wright), "The Son of Man in the Gospel of John" (John Behr), "Sound and Silence in Augustine’s Christological Exegesis" (Carol Harrison), "According to the Flesh?: The Problem of Knowing Christ in Chalcedonian Perspective" (Ian Mcfarland), "Christ and the Moral Life" (Oliver O'Donovan), "Christ and the Poetic Imagination" (Malcolm Guite)

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Victorian Pulpit is the first book to employ the methods of orality-literacy scholarship in the study of the nineteenth-century British sermon. The first chapters present three ways in which Victorian preaching was a conflation of oral and written practice. The second part is an analysis of the rhetoric of three prominent ministers. The book concludes by suggesting other ways of bringing orality-literacy studies and Victorian scholarship together.
