Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The British country house has long been regarded as the jewel in the nation's heritage crown. But the country house is also an expression of wealth and power, and as scholars reconsider the nation's colonial past, new questions are being posed about these great houses and their links to Atlantic slavery. This book, authored by a range of academics and heritage professionals, grew out of a 2009 conference on 'Slavery and the British Country house: mapping the current research' organised by English Heritage in partnership with the University of the West of England, the National Trust and the Economic History Society. It asks what links might be established between the wealth derived from slavery and the British country house and what implications such links should have for the way such properties are represented to the public today.Lavishly illustrated and based on the latest scholarship, this wide-ranging and innovative volume provides in-depth examinations of individual houses, regional studies and critical reconsiderations of existing heritage sites, including two studies specially commissioned by English Heritage and one sponsored by the National Trust.

Download or read book The Diaries of Charlotte Downes Vol II written by John Lane and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2013 with total page 446 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Diaries of Charlotte Downes, Volume II, is the fourth in a four-volume set, covering years 1839-1858. The diaries afford the reader a glimpse of a small corner of rural England from the Regency through to the early-mid Victorian periods when life was based on a timeless and often precarious agricultural economy, a rigid, inequitable class system and deference to an authoritative Church. Charlotte, the daughter of an influential Wiltshire land-owner, was first cousin to the poet Shelley; she later married Richard Downes, rector of Berwick St John. Her diaries, together with those of her sister, Harriet, have been described by one authority as "like a novel by Jane Austen, but for real". This full transcription contains entries spanning a period of almost fifty years and provides a useful resource for scholars and social historians alike. Family historians will find recorded within these pages an extraordinary number of named individuals, from families representing all sections of society.

Download or read book The Place Names of Wiltshire written by Einar Ekblom and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-04 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Place-Names of Wiltshire: Their Origin and History No branch of English philology seems of late years to have aroused such great interest as the study of place-nomenclature, and, if one were to judge from the many works that have been published on this subject, the science in question ought to be at a comparatively advanced stage. A closer investigation of these works, however, will show that a great part of them by no means satisfy the claims of strict scholarship. As far as one can see, the study of English place-names has to a certain extent fallen into the hands of persons who have not sufficient knowledge of philology to be able to fulfil their task in a satisfactory way. It is also indisputable that this study to a great extent encourages dilettantism. Two general points in which English place-name scholars have laid themselves open to criticism are the following: 1) the importance of the dialects as a factor in the development of the names seems entirely neglected; 2) insufficient attention is paid to geographical and topographical considerations. Moreover, many scholars content themselves with an inadequate collection of material, which naturally must also affect the reliability of their conclusions. On the other hand however, it is evident that in this subject there are many points which are too difficult and uncertain to be settled, in spite of all attempts at thoroughness.
