Book excerpt: The perceptions of parents of children with cognitive disabilities, with respect to their children's transition from school to employment, were examined in this thesis. These perceptions were ascertained through the use of a survey, through individual interviews with parents, and through discussion groups between parents. The experiences parents have had with respect to the school-to-work transitions of their children varied. The results suggest that parents have concerns about the preparation and implementation of the transition from school to work and adult life. There is further evidence to suggest that the school-to-work transition is a trying period for parents and that they have certain preferences, expectations, and needs. Implications for schools and adult service agencies are discussed and recommendations for improving the school-to-work transition process from a parental perspective are provided. A better understanding of parental perceptions by the professionals involved in the transition processmay lead to smoother school-to-work transitions for young people with cognitive disabilities.

Book excerpt: Using a self-report quantitative survey with additional open-ended questions, this study examined the transition experiences of 836 parents of children with Intellectual and / or Developmental Disabilities currently enrolled in a post-high school program for students ages 18-21 in the Chicago metropolitan region. More specifically, this study examined the influence that a highly qualified special education Transition Specialist had on positively influencing in-school experiences that in turn would expectedly result in positive post-school outcomes for children. The independent variable in the study was presence or absence of an LSB-II transition specialist at IEP meetings. The dependent variables in the study consisted of a) Student focused planning; b) Family engagement; c) Student development; d) Interagency collaboration; e) Vision for successful post-school outcomes based on federally required areas; f) IEP team member transition knowledge; and g) Confidence that the transition planning process will result in successful post-school outcomes for their child with I/DD, to compare experiences. Results from the quantitative portion of the survey evidenced no difference in parent transition planning experiences using the independent variable of the LBS-II presence. However, qualitative data from the open-ended survey questions suggests that parent knowledge of key transition practices, proven to influence post-school outcomes, are evident in richer detail when then LBS-II is involved in the planning. Secondary analyses conducted identified a significant discrepancy between parents' perception of the frequency of transition compliance mandates and their perceived importance of each mandate. Finally, results raise awareness that educational environment is a contributing factor to opportunities for student development.

Book excerpt: Parents of children with severe/moderate disabilities experience uncertainty and a lack of knowledge as their children go through the transition to adulthood. Research has shown parents play a key role in their child's postschool outcome success and that parent training and beginning transition preparation early are key predictors. This study examined the effects of parent training on parents' knowledge, expectations, and action towards their child's transition to adulthood. Participants consisted of parents of middle school youth with severe/moderate disabilities. The study measured parent knowledge, expectations, and actions. Procedures involved (a) a pretest administered to parents on their transition knowledge, (b) a training session highlighting successful examples of similar individuals with disabilities in the transition process, information on transition services, and action goals that participants can begin working on now; and (c) a posttest on parent knowledge and expectations. The mean scores on parent expectations and knowledge increased from the pretest to posttest. Additionally, parents were given an assignment to be completed after the training session as a measure of their action to assist their child towards transition. The researcher contacted participants 2 weeks following training to determine if the assignment was completed. Seventy-one percent of participants indicated they worked on their assignment during the 2-week follow-up phone call. Based on these results, parent training in this study was associated with increased parent expectations, knowledge, and actions.
