Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although individual parents face different issues, Sonya Charles believes most parents want their children to be good people who are happy in their adult lives. Parents and Virtues: An Analysis of Moral Development and Parental Virtue starts from the question of how parents can raise their child to be a moral and flourishing person. At first glance, readers might think this question is better left to psychologists rather than philosophers. The author proposes that Aristotle’s ethical theory (known as virtue theory) has much to say on this issue. Aristotle asks how we become moral people and how that relates to leading a good life. In other words, his motivating questions are very similar to the goals parents have for their children. The first part of this book details what the basic components of Aristotle’s theory can tell us about the project of parenting. In the second part, the focus shifts to consider some issues that present potential moral dilemmas for parents and discuss whether there are specific virtues we may want to use to guide parental actions. Parents and Virtues will be of particular value to scholars and students who work on the ethics of parenthood, virtue theory, and bioethics.

Book excerpt: Helping young people to form their character is an exciting endeavor that God has entrusted first of all to parents. It requires delicacy and strength, patience and joy, and is not lacking in challenges. It means helping children develop a concern for others, teaching them to form relationships that are truly human, and overcoming the fear of commitment. Educating children involves preparing them for the future—a future that will always involve difficulties, but also joys. In the end, it means preparing each child to respond fully to God’s plan for his or her life. The twenty-one essays contained in this book will help parents in this great task. Whether dealing with adolescent development issues, discipline, modesty, passing on the faith, or other parenting matters, this book covers it all with supernatural outlook and common sense. Written in an open-ended style that empowers parents to find their own solutions, it can be read straight through from beginning to end, or by skipping to specific chapters, according to one’s interests and needs. Both young parents and those with more experience will benefit from the insights found here.

Book Families of Virtue

    Book Details:
  • Author : Erin M. Cline
  • Publisher : Columbia University Press
  • Release : 2015-05-05
  • ISBN : 0231539045
  • Pages : 367 pages

Download or read book Families of Virtue written by Erin M. Cline and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2015-05-05 with total page 367 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Families of Virtue articulates the critical role of the parent–child relationship in the moral development of infants and children. Building on thinkers and scientists across time and disciplines, from ancient Greek and Chinese philosophers to contemporary feminist ethicists and attachment theorists, this book takes an effective approach for strengthening families and the character of children. Early Confucian philosophers argue that the general ethical sensibilities we develop during infancy and early childhood form the basis for nearly every virtue and that the parent–child relationship is the primary context within which this growth occurs. Joining these views with scientific work on early childhood, Families of Virtue shows how Western psychology can reinforce and renew the theoretical underpinnings of Confucian thought and how Confucian philosophers can affect positive social and political change in our time, particularly in such areas as paid parental leave, breastfeeding initiatives, marriage counseling, and family therapy.

Book The Little Virtues

Download or read book The Little Virtues written by Natalia Ginzburg and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2017-09-12 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this collection of her finest and best-known short essays, Natalia Ginzburg explores both the mundane details and inescapable catastrophes of personal life with the grace and wit that have assured her rightful place in the pantheon of classic mid-century authors. Whether she writes of the loss of a friend, Cesare Pavese; or what is inexpugnable of World War II; or the Abruzzi, where she and her first husband lived in forced residence under Fascist rule; or the importance of silence in our society; or her vocation as a writer; or even a pair of worn-out shoes, Ginzburg brings to her reflections the wisdom of a survivor and the spare, wry, and poetically resonant style her readers have come to recognize. "A glowing light of modern Italian literature . . . Ginzburg's magic is the utter simplicity of her prose, suddenly illuminated by one word that makes a lightning streak of a plain phrase. . . . As direct and clean as if it were carved in stone, it yet speaks thoughts of the heart.' — The New York Times Book Review

  • Publisher : Oxford University Press
  • Release : 2010-07-06

Download or read book The Ethics of Parenthood written by Norvin Richards and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2010-07-06 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In The Ethics of Parenthood Norvin Richards explores the moral relationship between parents and children from slightly before the cradle to slightly before the grave. Richards maintains that biological parents do ordinarily have a right to raise their children, not as a property right but as an instance of our general right to continue whatever we have begun. The contention is that creating a child is a first act of parenthood, hence it ordinarily carries a right to continue as parent to that child. Implications are drawn for a wide range of cases, including those of Baby Jessica and Baby Richard, prenatal abandonment, babies switched at birth and sent home with the wrong parents, and families separated by war or natural disaster. A second contention is that children have a claim of their own to have their autonomy respected, and that this claim is stronger the better the grounds for believing that what the child's actions express is a self of the child's own. A final set of chapters concern parents and their grown children. Views are offered about what duties parents have at this stage of life, about what is required in order to treat grown children as adults, and about what obligations grown children have to their parents. In the final chapter Richards discusses the contention that parents sometimes have an obligation to die rather than permit their children to make the sacrifices needed to keep them alive, arguing that a leading view about this undervalues both love and autonomy.

Book Three Virtues of Effective Parenting

Download or read book Three Virtues of Effective Parenting written by Shirley Yuen and published by Tuttle Publishing. This book was released on 2012-02-07 with total page 136 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Asian parenting book applies the wisdom of the Chinese sage Confucius to the challenges of modern parenting. Confucius believed that any change we wish to make in our lives must begin from within. Three Virtues of Effective Parenting calls on readers to develop the virtues to help them understand the changes they can make to become a better parent: Benevolence teaches us how to truly love our children, to guide them with discipline and respect, and to be generous with our time and loving care. Wisdom shows us how to take the right action for the right result, to understand our children's problems, and to acknowledge and learn from our mistakes. Courage helps us to preserve when things go wrong, let go of our children when necessary, and dare to make difficult choices. Readers will discover that the power of virtue is twofold: It will help them to become better people, as well as influence and change the behavior of the people around them. Using the tools of Confucian philosophy, this book aims for real-life results in parent/child relationships. Readers will come to understand the three roles they play as parents—the good ruler, the inspiring teacher, and the caring friend.
