Book excerpt: Parenting style is one of the essential aspects influencing students’ academic performance, and this thesis focused on the effectiveness of authoritative and authoritarian parenting (Zahed et al., 2016). The choice of the parenting style employed in a household is the result of a myriad of other elements coming together. I studied the relationship between parenting styles and academic achievement in relation to students' ethnicity and socio-economic levels (SES). A survey was created to assess the preferred parenting style, ethnicity, academic outcomes, and the family’s SES. The study found two correlations. First, a negative correlations between the characteristics of authoritative style and authoritarian parenting (demandingness and responsiveness). Second, a positive correlation between ethnicity and socioeconomic level. Contrary to previous research, this sample showed a higher socioeconomic status for Non-White students. Results from 148 students showed no relationship between parenting styles and academic achievement as a function of ethnicity and SES. Even though, there was no significant relationship between the variables, all the ethnicities in the sample showed propensity towards an authoritative parenting style. These findings were corroborated by other studies that focused on college students to show no significant impact of parenting style on academic achievement. Higher education can be considered a factor that balances out the scales and provides equal opportunity for all.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this qualitative, phenomenological study will be to explore the lived experiences of African American adults about their perceptions of the potential influences of parenting style, parenting practices and family culture on their academic and career success. Major inner city communities in America are plagued with several problems that can be linked to its educational system--high dropout rates, high unemployment rates, high crime rates, and high poverty rates. However, despite such dire data, there are graduates of the inner city school district who have achieved much success in life. Although there is a lack of definitive research on parenting styles and African American achievement, there is a significant body of research that has determined there is a direct correlation between parenting style and student achievement. Furthermore, psychologists have determined that there is a connection between the early cognitive development of children and their development of higher order thinking capabilities. For this research, the participants are African American adult alumni of an inner city school district who were interviewed who described their perceptions of the role that parenting styles, parenting practices and family culture played in their academic achievement and current socio-economic status. Another selection criteria for participants was that the socio-economic factor of median income of the participants exceeded the level for their state. Furthermore, using a semi-structured interview format, the data was coded and analyzed for themes that provide rich, descriptions that may be useful to other districts. The central research question is "How do African American adults who attended a selected inner city school describe their perceptions about the value of parenting style, parenting practices and family cultural differences in parenting on their cognitive development, educational achievement levels and socio-economic status?" The findings indicate that their relationship with their parents did have an impact on what they have become.

Book excerpt: Working mothers, broken homes, poverty, racial or ethnic background, poorly educated parents—these are the usual reasons given for the academic problems of poor urban children. Reginald M. Clark contends, however, that such structural characteristics of families neither predict nor explain the wide variation in academic achievement among children. He emphasizes instead the total family life, stating that the most important indicators of academic potential are embedded in family culture. To support his contentions, Clark offers ten intimate portraits of Black families in Chicago. Visiting the homes of poor one- and two-parent families of high and low achievers, Clark made detailed observations on the quality of home life, noting how family habits and interactions affect school success and what characteristics of family life provide children with "school survival skills," a complex of behaviors, attitudes, and knowledge that are the essential elements in academic success. Clark's conclusions lead to exciting implications for educational policy. If school achievement is not dependent on family structure or income, parents can learn to inculcate school survival skills in their children. Clark offers specific suggestions and strategies for use by teachers, parents, school administrators, and social service policy makers, but his work will also find an audience in urban anthropology, family studies, and Black studies.

Book excerpt: The purpose of the study was to explore the relation between selected Socio-economic and parenting factors on the academic performance of pupils. The study used a descriptive research designed type. A total of twenty-nine (29) pupils who are in Basic two were used for the study. Questionnaires and test were the instruments used in gathering data on pupils and their parents. Responses from the pupils and their parents were treated statistically using frequency tables, percentages, mean, standard deviation and Pearson's Correlation as the tools. Major findings from the study indicated that pupils' academic performance is just above average; and that the Socio-economic and parenting factors of the parents of the pupils' are also average. The study further established that there is a significant, medium and positive relation existing between the Socio-economic status of pupils' parents and pupils' academic performance; the parenting attitudes and pupils' academic performance. Finally, the study again established that there is a significant, medium relation between the Socio-economic status of pupils' parents and their parenting attitude or responsible parenting. Based the findings, suggestions in the form of recommendations were offered, which included; the need for deepened teacher - parent collaboration and the school undertaking activities to attract parents to the school.

Book excerpt: Decades of research have demonstrated that the parent-child dyad and the environment of the familyâ€"which includes all primary caregiversâ€"are at the foundation of children's well- being and healthy development. From birth, children are learning and rely on parents and the other caregivers in their lives to protect and care for them. The impact of parents may never be greater than during the earliest years of life, when a child's brain is rapidly developing and when nearly all of her or his experiences are created and shaped by parents and the family environment. Parents help children build and refine their knowledge and skills, charting a trajectory for their health and well-being during childhood and beyond. The experience of parenting also impacts parents themselves. For instance, parenting can enrich and give focus to parents' lives; generate stress or calm; and create any number of emotions, including feelings of happiness, sadness, fulfillment, and anger. Parenting of young children today takes place in the context of significant ongoing developments. These include: a rapidly growing body of science on early childhood, increases in funding for programs and services for families, changing demographics of the U.S. population, and greater diversity of family structure. Additionally, parenting is increasingly being shaped by technology and increased access to information about parenting. Parenting Matters identifies parenting knowledge, attitudes, and practices associated with positive developmental outcomes in children ages 0-8; universal/preventive and targeted strategies used in a variety of settings that have been effective with parents of young children and that support the identified knowledge, attitudes, and practices; and barriers to and facilitators for parents' use of practices that lead to healthy child outcomes as well as their participation in effective programs and services. This report makes recommendations directed at an array of stakeholders, for promoting the wide-scale adoption of effective programs and services for parents and on areas that warrant further research to inform policy and practice. The Broken Compass puts this question to the test in the most thorough scientific investigation to date of how parents across socioeconomic and ethnic groups contribute to the academic performance of K-12 children. The study's surprising discovery is that no clear connection exists between parental involvement and improved student performance. Keith Robinson and Angel Harris assessed over sixty measures of parental participation, at home and in school. Some of the associations they found between socioeconomic status and educational involvement were consistent with past studies. Yet other results ran contrary to previous research and popular perceptions. It is not the case that Hispanic and African American parents are less concerned with education than other ethnic groups--or that "tiger parenting" among Asian Americans gets the desired results. In fact, many low-income parents across a wide spectrum want to be involved in their children's school lives, but they often receive little support from the school system. And for immigrant families, language barriers only worsen the problem. While Robinson and Harris do not wish to discourage parents' interest, they believe that the time has come to seriously reconsider whether greater parental involvement can make much of a dent in the basic problems facing their children's education today. This provocative study challenges some of our most cherished beliefs about the role of family in educational success.
