Download or read book Parasol Poems 1977 2007 written by Hal Shows and published by Luniver Press. This book was released on 2007-10 with total page 86 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In language at once bracingly direct and lyrical, these poems, which roam from the freest of free verse to traditional forms, fuse the creative heart and the keen critical intellect in a way reminiscent of D.H. Lawrence and Stanley Kunitz. Their themes range from the personal to the global. Classical motifs merge with modern mayhem, and the results are revelatory. At the centre of the book is the search for love in a world that degrades the notion daily. This rare book of poems will appeal equally to the scholar, the critic, the lover of poetry, and all students of the human heart. Florida poet and musician Hal Shows is a State of Florida Individual Artist Fellow and a member of the National Association of Recording Arts and Sciences. His latest recording, Native Dancer, issued in 2003. Parasol is his first full-length collection of poems

Book The Poetry of He Zhu 1052 1125

Download or read book The Poetry of He Zhu 1052 1125 written by Stuart Sargent and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2007-03-31 with total page 516 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Northern Song poet He Zhu is best known for his lyrics (ci) but also produced shi poetry of subtlety, wit, and feeling. This study examines the latter as a response to the options available to a late-eleventh century writer in the pentametrical and heptametrical forms of Ancient Verse, Regulated Verse, and Quatrains. Numerous comparisons are made with Su Shi, Huang Tingjian, Du Fu, and other important writers. In a major advance over previous methodologies, the author uses a clear system of metrical notation to show how sound patterns reveal the poet's artistic and emotional intentions. This innovation and the author's other meticulous explorations of He Zhu's artistry allow us to experience Chinese poetry as never before. From the reader's report: "not just an excellent study of an individual poet but also a model of reading the language of classical Chinese poetry. [..] opens up a world of interpretive territory heretofore seldom explored."

Book Community in Modern Scottish Literature

Download or read book Community in Modern Scottish Literature written by and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2016-04-18 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Community in Modern Scottish Literature is the first book to examine representations and theories of community in Scottish writing of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries across a broad range of authors and from various conceptual perspectives. The leading scholars in the field examine work in the novel, poetry, and drama, by key Scottish authors such as MacDiarmid, Kelman, and Galloway, as well as less well known writers. This includes postmodern and postcolonial readings, analysis of writing by gay and Gaelic authors, alongside theorists of community such as Nancy, Bauman, Delanty, Cohen, Blanchot, and Anderson. This book will unsettle and yet broaden traditional conceptions of community in Scotland and Scottish literature, suggesting a more plural idea of what community might be.

Book Sinners Welcome

    Book Details:
  • Author : Mary Karr
  • Publisher : Harper Collins
  • Release : 2009-10-13
  • ISBN : 0061877786
  • Pages : 116 pages

Download or read book Sinners Welcome written by Mary Karr and published by Harper Collins. This book was released on 2009-10-13 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mary Karr describes herself as a black-belt sinner, and this -- her fourth collection of poems --traces her improbable journey from the inferno of a tormented childhood into a resolutely irreverent Catholicism. Not since Saint Augustine wrote "Give me chastity, Lord -- but not yet!" has anyone brought such smart-assed hilarity to a conversion story. Karr's battle is grounded in common loss (a bitter romance, friends' deaths, a teenage son's leaving home) as well as in elegies for a complicated mother. The poems disarm with the arresting humor familiar to readers of her memoirs, The Liars' Club and Cherry. An illuminating cycle of spiritual poems have roots in Karr's eight-month tutelage in Jesuit prayer practice, and as an afterword, her celebrated essay on faith weaves the tale of how the language of poetry, which relieved her suffering so young, eventually became the language of prayer. Those of us who fret that poetry denies consolation will find clear-eyed joy in this collection.

Book Old Age in Greek and Roman Art

Download or read book Old Age in Greek and Roman Art written by Susan B. Matheson and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2022 with total page 297 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A comprehensive look at ancient sculptures, wall paintings, vases, and more depicting the elderly in Greek and Roman society Some of the most vivid portraits in ancient art depict older members of society. In marble and bronze sculptures, on coins and painted vases, and in wall paintings and mosaics, elderly men and women are shown with the telltale signs of old age: wrinkles, white hair, sagging jowls, and stooped postures. This publication examines more than 300 of these vivid images to reveal perceptions--both positive and negative--about aging and the aged in Greek and Roman society. Seven chapters explore medium and form--including Greek grave reliefs, marble grave monuments in Roman Africa, and Roman sarcophagi--as well as subjects, from priests and priestesses to ancient kings of Athens, old gods, and satyrs. Grounded in the analysis of art, contemporary literature, and the archaeological record, this comprehensive volume is the first in English to explore how old age was presented in art from antiquity. Book Speculative Everything

  • Pages : 235 pages

Download or read book Speculative Everything written by Anthony Dunne and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2013-12-06 with total page 235 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How to use design as a tool to create not only things but ideas, to speculate about possible futures. Today designers often focus on making technology easy to use, sexy, and consumable. In Speculative Everything, Anthony Dunne and Fiona Raby propose a kind of design that is used as a tool to create not only things but ideas. For them, design is a means of speculating about how things could be—to imagine possible futures. This is not the usual sort of predicting or forecasting, spotting trends and extrapolating; these kinds of predictions have been proven wrong, again and again. Instead, Dunne and Raby pose “what if” questions that are intended to open debate and discussion about the kind of future people want (and do not want). Speculative Everything offers a tour through an emerging cultural landscape of design ideas, ideals, and approaches. Dunne and Raby cite examples from their own design and teaching and from other projects from fine art, design, architecture, cinema, and photography. They also draw on futurology, political theory, the philosophy of technology, and literary fiction. They show us, for example, ideas for a solar kitchen restaurant; a flypaper robotic clock; a menstruation machine; a cloud-seeding truck; a phantom-limb sensation recorder; and devices for food foraging that use the tools of synthetic biology. Dunne and Raby contend that if we speculate more—about everything—reality will become more malleable. The ideas freed by speculative design increase the odds of achieving desirable futures.
