Book Plant Parasitic Nematodes of Potatoes in Lebanon

Download or read book Plant Parasitic Nematodes of Potatoes in Lebanon written by Youssef Toufic al Masri and published by . This book was released on 1999 with total page 96 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Potato is one of the major important crops in Lebanon, grown in open field. Potatoes are subject to attack by many pests including plant parasitic nematodes. The major potato growning areas in Lebanon. Aakkar and Bekaa plains, were surveyed for ihe occurrence and distribution of plant parasitic nematodes. The most frequently encountered parasitic nematode genera were Tylenchus. Tylenchorhynchus. Aphelenckus and Glohodera. Tylenchorhynchus. Tylenchus, Aphelenchus and Radopholoides were found in both Aakkar and Bekaa plains. Globodera, Helicotylenchus and Zygolylenchus were recovered from fields in the Bekaa plain only wrhile Aphelenchoides, Ditylenchus. PsylencftUS, Radopholoides, Merilimus, Cacopaurus and Aconlylus were recovered from fields in the Akkar plain only, in the coastal area of Lebanon.--Globodera, a quarantine pest, was detected for the first time to be associated with potatoes in Lebanon. The data obtained from morphological studies as well as PCR and ELISA tests revealed that all populations were Glohodera rosiochiensis. Fourteen out of eighty eight fields were infested with Globodera rosiochiensis. All of the infested PCN fields were located in four neighboring villages near the city of Rayak. in the centra! Bekaa. PCR amplification was a successful technique, using crude DNA of single or bulk nematodes as templates for determining the species of Globodera. The pathotype of two Globodera rosiochiensis populations, studied from Lebanon, was of the Rol type.--Stimulation of PCN egg hatching by plant root exudates of 19 different plant species revealed that tomato root diffusates induced the highest percentage hatchabilih response (average 60%) whereas Lettuce, melon and the Control {barren soil without any plant) gave the least hatching response.

Book Integrated Nematode Management

Download or read book Integrated Nematode Management written by Richard A. Sikora and published by Cabi. This book was released on 2021 with total page 488 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Plant parasitic nematodes are costly burdens of crop production, causing an estimated US$80 - 118 billion per year in damage to crops. They are associated with nearly every important agricultural crop, and are a significant constraint on global food security. Regulations on the use of chemical pesticides have resulted in growing interest in alternative methods of nematode control. Future changes in climate, cropping systems, food habits, as well as social and environmental factors also affect the options for nematode control. Taking a systematic crop by crop approach, this book: Outlines the economic importance of specific plant parasitic nematode problems on the major food and industrial crops. Presents the state-of-the-art management strategies that have been developed to reduce specific nematode impacts, and outlines their limitations. Contains case studies to illustrate impact in the field. Aims to anticipate future changes in nematode disease pressure that might develop as a result of climate change, and new cropping systems.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When Franklin published her book on cyst nematodes in 1951, the cyst nematodes were already known as serious pests of brassicas, cereals, potatoes and sugar beets. However, at that time this group of nematode, with about 12 species, was considered tobe largely temperate in distribu tion. Now a total of 105 species (including those that are considered as synonyms or species inquirende by some or all) within six genera of cyst nematodes have been described from temperate, tropical, and subtropical regions and at least five species are important constraints to crop produc tion in tropical agriculture. The previous impression of localization of cyst nematodes in the temperate region was seemingly an artifact due to a greater concentration of nematologists in the temperate regions. Based on my own experience of working in several Asian and African countries, I believe that many more undescribed species are present in the tropical countries of Asia and Africa, and probably in other tropical regions. Most growers, extension workers, and research managers in these regions are still not aware of the possible harm of presence of these nematodes in their agricultural soils. The cyst nematodes are perhaps smaller than the smallest available computer chip but they are very well programmed to survive and pro pagate despite severe hardships. These nematodes are very selective in their choice of food; about 50% of known species are parasites of plants mainly in the families Poaceae and Fabaceae.

Book CRISPR and RNAi Systems

Download or read book CRISPR and RNAi Systems written by Kamel A Abd-Elsalam and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2021-02-27 with total page 842 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Plants are vulnerable to pathogens including fungi, bacteria, and viruses, which cause critical problems and deficits. Crop protection by plant breeding delivers a promising solution with no obvious effect on human health or the local ecosystem. Crop improvement has been the most powerful approach for producing unique crop cultivars since domestication occurred, making possible the main innovations in feeding the globe and community development. Genome editing is one of the genetic devices that can be implemented, and disease resistance is frequently cited as the most encouraging application of CRISPR/Cas9 technology in agriculture. Nanobiotechnology has harnessed the power of genome editing to develop agricultural crops. Nanosized DNA or RNA nanotechnology approaches could contribute to raising the stability and performance of CRISPR guide RNAs. This book brings together the latest research in these areas. CRISPR and RNAi Systems: Nanobiotechnology Approaches to Plant Breeding and Protection presents a complete understanding of the RNAi and CRISPR/Cas9 techniques for controlling mycotoxins, fighting plant nematodes, and detecting plant pathogens. CRISPR/Cas genome editing enables efficient targeted modification in most crops, thus promising to accelerate crop improvement. CRISPR/Cas9 can be used for management of plant insects, and various plant pathogens. The book is an important reference source for both plant scientists and environmental scientists who want to understand how nano biotechnologically based approaches are being used to create more efficient plant protection and plant breeding systems. Shows how nanotechnology is being used as the basis for new solutions for more efficient plant breeding and plant protection Outlines the major techniques and applications of both CRISPR and RNAi technologies Assesses the major challenges of escalating these technologies on a mass scale

Book Nematodes Affecting Potato and Sustainable Practices for Their Management

Download or read book Nematodes Affecting Potato and Sustainable Practices for Their Management written by Fábia S.O. Lima and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Plant-parasitic nematodes are a significant factor limiting potato production and tuber quality in several regions where potato is produced. Overall, parasitic nematodes alone cause an estimated annual crop loss of $ 78 billion worldwide and an average crop yield loss of 10-15%. As a result, sustainable food production and food security are directly impacted by pests and diseases. Degrading land use with monocultures and unsustainable cropping practices have intensified problems associated with plant pathogens. Proper identification of nematode species and isolates is crucial to choose effective and sustainable management strategies for nematode infection. Several nematode species have been reported associated with potato. Among those, the potato cyst nematodes Globodera rostochiensis and G. pallida, the root-knot nematode Meloidogyne spp., the root lesion nematode Pratylenchus spp., the potato rot nematode Ditylenchus destructor and the false root-knot nematode Nacobbus aberrans are major species limiting potato yield and leading to poor tuber quality. Here, we report a literature review on the biology, symptoms, damage and control methods used for these nematode species.
