Book Insect Parasites and Predators of Insect Pests Classic Reprint

Download or read book Insect Parasites and Predators of Insect Pests Classic Reprint written by Curtis Paul Clausen and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-11 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Insect Parasites and Predators of Insect Pests There are certain definite limitations to the possibilities of con trol of insect pests by the use of parasites. Only in exceptional cases can complete control be achieved by this means. In the great majority of cases different degrees of partial control are secured. For this reason the introduction of parasites should be considered as supplementary to the usual methods of mechanical and chemical con trol rather than as a alternative method. The reduction in numbers of the insect pest by the use of parasites renders outbreaks less fra quent, and control is then more readily accomplished by the use of sprays or other mechanical or chemical methods. Book A Study in Insect Parasitism

Download or read book A Study in Insect Parasitism written by Leland Ossian Howard and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-28 with total page 66 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Study in Insect Parasitism: A Consideration of the Parasites of the White-Marked Tussock Moth, With an Account of Their Habits and Interrelations, and With Descriptions of New Species Many observations are recorded which show the prominent part which parasites take in the reduction of an insect which under favor able conditions has exceeded its normal bounds in respect to numbers. Such constant struggles between species in the apparent effort to pre serve a just balance are met with by every observer in the course of nearly every season's observations. The writer has, however, always desired an opportunity to study the exact details of such a struggle upon a large scale, and this opportunity was afforded in this instance. Book Evolutionary Strategies of Parasitic Insects and Mites

Download or read book Evolutionary Strategies of Parasitic Insects and Mites written by Peter Price and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains the invited lectures presented in a symposium entitled "Evolutionary strategies of parasitic insects and mites" at the national meeting of the Entomological Society of America in Minneapolis, Minnesota, 2-5 December, 1974. The intent was to bring together biologists who have worked on arthropods that are either plant or animal parasites in order to foster consideration of general aspects of the parasitic way of life. There seems to be a deficiency of ecological and evolutionary concepts relating to parasitism, in contrast to the burgeoning literature on predation, and it appeared that an amalgamation of studies on plant and animal parasites might help development of some generalities. Since parasities are far more numerous than predators in the world fauna, or in any particular community, emphasis on their study is justified. I freely admit that para sitoids have been usefully regarded as predators by ecologists, and many concepts on predation have been derived from their study. Also, in whichever category one places the parasitoids, that is the one which contains the most species. However, from an evolu tionary point of view they show many characteristics that must be regarded as those of a parasite. Notably, they are small, highly specific to their host, highly coevolved with it, as a result many species can coexist, and their adaptive radiation has produced the majority of the species diversity seen on Earth today.

Book The External and Internal Parasites of Domestic Animals Classic Reprint

Download or read book The External and Internal Parasites of Domestic Animals Classic Reprint written by A. E. Verrill and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-26 with total page 148 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The External and Internal Parasites of Domestic Animals The external parasites of our domestic animals nearly all belong to the great class of animals which we call Insects, but the internal parasites are, with few exceptions, representatives of the class of Worms. The division of the subjects of these lectures is, therefore, both convenient and natural. The class of Insects includes a far greater number of spe cies than any other class of animals, the number actually amounting to several hundred thousands, each country having a vast number peculiar to itself. They are also exceedingly diverse in habits, as well as in form and structure. In order to show the affinities of the insect-parasites and their position among other insects, it will be necessary to give a brief sketch of the whole class, with a few remarks on the more important peculiarities of their anatomy.
