Book excerpt: Excerpt from Parasites and Parasitic Diseases of Swine in Puerto Rico Yards should not be situated so that one can drain, into another. In all cases, the rotation of yards or pastures is very desirable. Each year or oftener a. Fresh lot should be occupied and, unless plowed, at least 1 year should elapse between successive occupations. Other aids in disinfection are plowing two or more times a year and fre quent applications of air-slaked lime to the yards and feeding places. Hogs should not be confined in small, covered pens unless the floors are of tight construction, preferably of concrete, and are kept in a dry, sanitary condition and free of dust. As parasites among uh confined pigs which range over a wide territory are less subject to control by preventive measures, these animals should be confined in sanitary yards or pastures. Cultivated pastures should receive more attention, as several valuable cr0ps for hogs can be grown and pastures can be used during the entire year. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Annotated Check List of the Parasites of Animals in Puerto Rico The parasites of animals established ln Puerto Rico, some 200 spe cies, are also, with but few exceptions, found on the continent of North America. However, owing to differences ln climatic and other factors there is considerable variation in the abundance of different species in the island as compared with the same species on the conti nent. As all the species of mammals now existing in Puerto Rico, except bats, have been introduced there are no native species of fixed parasites in them. Book Swine Diseases Classic Reprint

Download or read book Swine Diseases Classic Reprint written by A. Thomas Kinsley and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-09 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Swine Diseases The experience of the writer in teaching, and in the manufacture and distribution of anti-hog cholera serum, no less than in practice, has forcibly impressed upon him the need of the veterinary profession for more general knowledge of the diseases of swine. They are not few who maintain that veterinary practice in the future will be concerned largely with the food-producing animals. The automobile has already supplanted most of the fancy driving horses; the auto-truck does much that would otherwise be accomplished by horses; and predictions are rife that the gasolene tractor will soon be made practicable for work on small farms. All things considered it seems probable that the equine population of the country is destined to increase but slowly if at all. The keeping of pet animals, including dogs and cats, is being looked upon more and more as an insanitary practice, while the farm dog and the roaming cur are becoming more and more the object of antagonistic legislation. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Worldwide, the numbers of people suffering and dying from parasitic diseases are overwhelming, with more than 100 million cases and 1 million deaths each year from malaria alone. Despite the magnitude of the problem and the importance of the parasites that cause opportunistic infections among persons with HIV/AIDS, medical schools in the United States, Canada, and other developed countries consistently reduce the amount of time spent on parasitic diseases in the curricu lum. As a result most medical students receive limited information about these diseases, and are inadequately prepared to diagnose or treat them as physicians. This problem is too large to be resolved within the time available for parasitology in the medical school curriculum; at most, students can be acquainted with the salient features of the medically important parasites. Likewise, the traditional isolation of parasitology from the rest of the curriculum (consistent with its exclu sion from most microbiology texts) is another unresolved problem. In my opinion, this is why most physicians are unable to think about the differential diagnosis of parasitic diseases in the same way that they routinely balance the probabilities of malignancy, cardiovascular, renal, and pulmonary disease vs other infectious diseases. To resolve these problems, relevant paradigms from parasitology must be used in the teaching of cell biology, molecular biology, genetics, and immu nology.
