Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Brazilian Spiritism (espiritismo, kardecismo) is an important middle-class religious movement whose followers believe in communication with the dead via spirit mediums and in healing illnesses by means of spiritual therapies. Unlike Anglo-Saxon Spiritualists, Brazilian Spiritists count among their number a well-developed and institutionalized intellectual elite that has reinterpreted northern hemisphere parapsychology and developed its own alternative medicine and sociology of religion. As a result, the mediation between popular religion (especially Afro-Brazilian religious practices) and the orthodoxies of the universities, the state, and the medical profession. Situating Spiritist intellectual thought in what he calls a broader ideological arena, Hess examines Spiritism in the context of religion, science, political ideology, medicine, and even the social sciences. Hess challenges the legacy of French sociologist Roger Bastide, who saw in Spiritism an elitist, middle-class ideology. In the process, Spirits and Scientists provides a new approach to middle-class religious movements in Latin America.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the twentieth century in Italy, there was a man who during his lifetime (1903-1994) became a legend for those who did not know him, and a great spiritual Teacher for those who were lucky enough to meet him. His name was Gustavo Rol, and he was an upper class gentleman who dressed elegantly, possessed an encyclopedic body of knowledge, the soul of an artist and the spirit of a mystic. As a young man, like Prince Siddhartha, he obtained enlightenment, even though he never declared as much openly. One of the consequences was that he began to manifest an impressive range of "possibilities" that are generally referred to as "paranormal": clairvoyance, telepathy, precognition, bilocation, levitation, telekinesis and many more. This anthology collects all of the anecdotes recounted over more than 60 years from numerous witnesses, including famous personalities from the Italian and international cultural scene. According to Rol, in the future science will be capable of explaining these phenomena...

Book excerpt: Single case studies have a long tradition in the field of parapsychology and anomalistics research. Naturally, thorough case studies do not usually provide hard evidence for the existence of paranormal effects. However, they demonstrate the dynamics of occurrence of such extraordinary phenomena and experiences in the living world. This volume is intended to give an overview of the methodological peculiarities of anomalistic field research. On the basis of historical and current case studies, certain specific psychosocial dynamics and problems in this interesting and challenging field of research are presented and discussed.

The series comprises high quality monographs and collected volumes that address such issues. The topics in this series range from phonology to semantics, from syntax to information structure, from mathematical linguistics to studies of the lexicon. Book What is Paranormal

    Book Details:
  • Author : Del Loewenthal
  • Publisher : Routledge
  • Release : 2021-11-17

  • Pages : 110 pages

Download or read book What is Paranormal written by Del Loewenthal and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-11-17 with total page 110 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "A layman will no doubt find it hard to understand how pathological disorders of the body and mind can be eliminated by ‘mere’ words. He will feel that he is being asked to believe in magic. And he will not be so very wrong for the words which we use in our everyday speech are nothing more than watered down magic." (Freud) This book provides further developments of such ideas, including Freud’s uncanny, Jung’s synchronicity, Daniels’ transpersonal, Clarke’s mindfulness and Sollod’s anomalous experiences. The paranormal could be seen as being fundamental to the psychological therapies. Occasionally a writer brings this potential to our attention but questions of science, evidence-based practice, etc. continue to dominate. Yet does this continue to lead to ‘what’s denied running even more wild’? Further, might the lessening of the paranormal be primarily what is lost, the aura, through the increase in internet therapy? The question of the paranormal and the psychological therapies continues to persist, not only for psychoanalysis but the psychological therapies in general. This book attempts to address that. The chapters in this book, apart from a new introduction and a new chapter, were originally published in the European Journal of Psychotherapy and Counselling.

This book was released on 2012-01-16 with total page 487 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For public and school libraries, this resource reflects recent changes in Library of Congress subject headings and authority files, and provides bilingual information essential to reference librarians and catalogers serving Spanish speakers. Libraries must provide better access to their collections for all users, including Spanish-language materials. The American Library Association has recognized this increasing need. Subject Headings for School and Public Libraries: Bilingual Fourth Edition is the only resource available that provides both authorized and reference entries in English and Spanish. A first-check source for the most frequently used headings needed in school and public libraries, this book incorporates thousands of new and revised entries to assist in applying LCSH and CSH headings. Of the approximately 30,000 headings listed, most include cross-references, and all of the cross-reference terms are translated. MARC21 tags are included for all authorized entries to simplify entering them into computerized catalogs, while indexes to all headings and free-floating subdivisions are provided in translation from Spanish to English. This book gives librarians access to accurate translations of the subject terms printed in books published and cataloged in English-speaking countries—invaluable information in settings with Spanish-speaking patrons.
