Book excerpt: Experimental studies of plasma heating due to microwave irradiation of the magnetically confined plasma column in the Princeton L-3 device is presented. X-band (10.4 GHz) microwave power, both in the ordinary and the extraordinary modes of propagation, is used in these experiments. Plasma heating is observed to occur simultaneously with the occurrence of parametric decay instabilities. The mode structure of the pump wave and the decay ion wave dispersion has been measured with high frequency probes. Detailed measurements of electron heating rates are presented and compared with collisional heating rates. In addition, production of suprathermal electrons and ions is also observed and measured. A comparison is made with recent laser-pellet interaction experiments. (auth).

The article that follows studies the effect of a spatial inhomogeneous plasma on this kind of parametric instability. It has been shown that consideration of the spatial inhomogeneity of the plasma produces two effects: in the first place, plasma inhomogeneity leads to a considerable increase in the threshold of the pumping wave's decay into two high-frequency electron waves and, secondly, are enclosed in the plasma; this corresponds to absolute instability.

If one coupled mode is more heavily damped than the other, then spatial growth is possible in both forward and back-scattering. The spatial amplification factor is that obtained by Rosenbluth only if the pump power is sufficiently above a damping-determined threshold but below a threshold for temporal or absolute instability exists for the backscatter instabilities. For the parametric decay instability at (omega sub 0) = 2(omega sub pe) in a finite spatial region only a temporal instability is found but no spatial (convective) growth. (Author).
