Book excerpt: This monograph is devoted to the further development of parametric weight Monte Carlo estimates for solving linear and nonlinear integral equations, radiation transfer equations, and boundary value problems, including problems with random parameters. The use of these estimates leads to the construction of new, effective Monte Carlo methods for calculating parametric multiple derivatives of solutions and for the main eigenvalues. The book opens with an introduction on the theory of weight Monte Carlo methods. The following chapters contain new material on solving boundary value problems with complex parameters, mixed problems to parabolic equations, boundary value problems of the second and third kind, and some improved techniques related to vector and nonlinear Helmholtz equations. Special attention is given to the foundation and optimization of the global 'walk on grid' method for solving the Helmholtz difference equation. Additionally, new Monte Carlo methods for solving stochastic radiation transfer problems are presented, including the estimation of probabilistic moments of corresponding critical parameters.

In the area of hydrology and water resources, a range of applications of entropy have been reported during the past three decades or so. This book focuses on parameter estimation using entropy for a number of distributions frequently used in hydrology. In the entropy-based parameter estimation the distribution parameters are expressed in terms of the given information, called constraints. Thus, the method lends itself to a physical interpretation of the parameters. Because the information to be specified usually constitutes sufficient statistics for the distribution under consideration, the entropy method provides a quantitative way to express the information contained in the distribution.

Book excerpt: Most of the modeling performed in biology aims at achieving a quantitative description and understanding of the intracellular signaling pathways within a "typical cell". However, in many biologically important situations even genetically identical cell populations show a heterogeneous response. This means that individual members of the cell population behave differently. Such situations require the study of cell-to-cell variability and the development of models for heterogeneous cell populations. The main contribution of this thesis is the development of unifying modeling frameworks for signal transduction and proliferation processes in heterogeneous cell populations. These modeling frameworks allow for the detailed description of individual cells as well as differences between them. In contrast to many existing modeling approaches, the proposed frameworks allow for a direct comparison of model predictions with available data. Beyond this, the proposed population models can be simulated efficiently and, by exploiting the model structures, we are able to develop model-tailored Bayesian parameter estimation methods. These methods enable the calculation of the optimal parameter estimates, as well as the evaluation of the parameter and prediction uncertainties. The proposed tools allow for novel insights in population dynamics, in particular the model-based characterization of population heterogeneity and cellular subgroups. This is illustrated for two different application examples: pro- and anti-apoptotic signaling, which is interesting in the context of cancer therapy, and immune cell proliferation.

Monte Carlo approximation to the null distribution of the test provides a convenient and powerful means of testing model fit. Nonparametric Monte Carlo Tests and Their Applications proposes a new Monte Carlo-based methodology to construct this type of approximation when the model is semistructured. When there are no nuisance parameters to be estimated, the nonparametric Monte Carlo test can exactly maintain the significance level, and when nuisance parameters exist, this method can allow the test to asymptotically maintain the level. The author addresses both applied and theoretical aspects of nonparametric Monte Carlo tests. The new methodology has been used for model checking in many fields of statistics, such as multivariate distribution theory, parametric and semiparametric regression models, multivariate regression models, varying-coefficient models with longitudinal data, heteroscedasticity, and homogeneity of covariance matrices. This book will be of interest to both practitioners and researchers investigating goodness-of-fit tests and resampling approximations. Every chapter of the book includes algorithms, simulations, and theoretical deductions. The prerequisites for a full appreciation of the book are a modest knowledge of mathematical statistics and limit theorems in probability/empirical process theory. The less mathematically sophisticated reader will find Chapters 1, 2 and 6 to be a comprehensible introduction on how and where the new method can apply and the rest of the book to be a valuable reference for Monte Carlo test approximation and goodness-of-fit tests.
