Download or read book Parallel Societies of International Students in Australia written by Catherine Gomes and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-09-30 with total page 92 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Parallel Societies of International Students in Australia explores the social and cultural spaces that international students occupy in destination countries. It specifically examines the connections they make and the significance of this parallel society in helping them become resilient, empowered and self-sufficient. It further explores the way in which international students become disconnected from the family and friends they left behind at home, as well as from local communities. Drawing on a decade worth of research into the social, cultural, real and digital spaces occupied by international students in Australia, the book also reflects on the biggest challenge humanity has faced in a hundred years; the COVID-19 global pandemic. It considers the impact that the decisions made by the Australian government and international education stakeholders in response to this evolving crisis have had on international students. This book will be of interest to academics and stakeholders involved in international education and working with international students.

Book excerpt: A man from Arizona buys a piece of land in the middle of a lava field while vacationing in Hawaii and returns to the island to find a deeper sense of home and build his midlife crisis tropical dream house. In this assemblage of journal entries during the trying year of construction, the author tells some of the secrets of rural Hawaii, revealing her dark underbelly. Meet the crazy neighbors in Puna's "open-air asylum," go on late night lava walks, join a lynch mob against the coqui frogs, and find the true meaning of 'aloha' in the jungle. "What do you do when you've run away from home-again-and you still want to keep running? This is a story of a relationship, not with just a house, but with a vision of home. I could have read twice as long a book with as much excitement-it was heartbreaking and hilarious to watch Gilmore's poignant love affair disintegrate. As a reader, I was rooting for the love affair to last, and I was stubbornly optimistic when it didn't but finally, he realizes one night, while holding his dog and swinging in the hammock, that he has built a perfect home in paradise-for someone else." -Gillian Kendall, author of Mr. Ding's Chicken Feet " I laughed myself silly and my mouth dropped open in amazement. The man is a true original." -David Henry Sterry, author of Chicken, Self-Portrait of a Young Man for Rent

Download or read book Parallel Learning of Reading and Writing in Early Childhood written by Mary Shea and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2011-04-28 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Parallel Learning of Reading and Writing in Early Childhood explores why it’s important to provide a balanced language learning environment for young children and offers approaches for children to practice and explore language. Writing – a different but parallel process – can open the door to reading, and an effective writing approach in the home and early childhood classrooms leads to the development of phonemic awareness, understanding of phonetic principles, vocabulary, fluency, and comprehension. Effective early childhood teachers are those that extend the knowledge children have amassed at home and use the knowledge of how children learn naturally in the world to inform their practice. This book offers the purpose, context, and outcomes of including writing right from the start in young children’s literacy learning. Through analysis of writing samples, research, and principles of best practices, Shea outlines the essential ingredients for early language learning and provides a developmentally appropriate approach to language learning. Throughout the chapters, Shea integrates discussion of assessment, classroom environment, instructional/teacher scaffolding, and differentiating instruction across developmental levels along with the supporting theory. Special features: vignettes and descriptions of Pre-K, K, and Grade 1 classrooms that incorporate writing across the day artifacts of children’s writing that demonstrate an evolution of knowledge related to both message and word construction concept labeling words and topic specific terms defined throughout the book to support the reader’s understanding of professional terminology discussion of seminal and current research as well as best practices Companion Website with lesson ideas and abundant writing samples from a wide range of demographic, cultural, and language contexts for readers to view, analyze, and discuss. This text offers pre- and in-service early childhood education teachers the content and resources to develop a deeper understanding of language learning, to prompt an examination of current practice, and to stimulate curricular re-designs that foster meaningful, joyful, and motivated learning.

Download or read book Parallel Stories written by Péter Nádas and published by Farrar, Straus and Giroux. This book was released on 2011-10-25 with total page 1153 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A New York Times Notable Book for 2011 In 1989, the year the Wall came down, a university student in Berlin on his morning run finds a corpse on a park bench and alerts the authorities. This scene opens a novel of extraordinary scope and depth, a masterwork that traces the fate of myriad Europeans—Hungarians, Jews, Germans, Gypsies—across the treacherous years of the mid-twentieth century. Three unusual men are at the heart of Parallel Stories: Hans von Wolkenstein, whose German mother is linked to secrets of fascist-Nazi collaboration during the 1940s; Ágost Lippay Lehr, whose influential father has served Hungary's different political regimes for decades; and András Rott, who has his own dark record of mysterious activities abroad. The web of extended and interconnected dramas reaches from 1989 back to the spring of 1939, when Europe trembled on the edge of war, and extends to the bestial times of 1944–45, when Budapest was besieged, the Final Solution devastated Hungary's Jews, and the war came to an end, and on to the cataclysmic Hungarian Revolution of October 1956. We follow these men from Berlin and Moscow to Switzerland and Holland, from the Mediterranean to the North Sea, and of course, from village to city in Hungary. The social and political circumstances of their lives may vary greatly, their sexual and spiritual longings may seem to each of them entirely unique, yet Péter Nádas's magnificent tapestry unveils uncanny reverberating parallels that link them across time and space. This is Péter Nádas's masterpiece—eighteen years in the writing, a sensation in Hungary even before it was published, and almost four years in the translating. Parallel Stories is the first foreign translation of this daring, demanding, and momentous novel, and it confirms for an even larger audience what Hungary already knows: that it is the author's greatest work.

Download or read book Parallel Lines written by Peter Lantos and published by Arcadia Books. This book was released on 2013-07-25 with total page 382 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "I have read few autobiographies more extraordinary . . . Astonishing" OBSERVER "A classic. I preferred it to Primo Levi's If This is a Man" EDWARD WILSON "A child's clear-eyed journey to hell" ANNE SEBBA This is a story of a young boy's journey from a sleepy provincial town in Hungary during the Second World War to the concentration camp in Bergen-Belsen. After a winter in Bergen-Belsen where his father died, he and his mother were liberated by the Americans outside a small German village, and handed over to the Red Army. They escaped from the Russians, and travelled, hiding on a goods train, through Prague to Budapest. Unlike other books dealing with this period, this is not a Holocaust story, but a child's recollection of a journey full of surprise, excitement, bereavement and terror. Yet this remains a testimony of survival, overcoming obstacles which to adults may seem insurmountable but to a child were just part of an adventure and, ultimately, recovery. After having established a career in the West, the author decided to revisit the stages on his earlier journeys, reliving the past through the perspective of the present. Along the way, ghosts from the past are finally laid to rest by the kindness of new friends. With an introduction by Lisa Appignanesi
