Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This research is aimed at simulation of the aerodynamics/dynamics of large parafoils. Parallel computation methods for 3D simulation of the dynamics and fluid dynamics of a parafoil, with prescribed, time-dependent shape changes were studied. The mathematical model was based on the time-dependent, 3D Navier-Stokes equations governing the incompressible flow around the parafoil, and Newton's law of motion governing the dynamics of the parafoil, with the aerodynamic forces acting on the parafoil, calculated from the flow field. The computational methods developed for these 3D simulations include a stabilized space-time finite element formulation to accommodate for the shape changes, special mesh generation and mesh moving strategies developed for this purpose, iterative solution techniques for the large, coupled nonlinear equation systems involved, and parallel implementation of all these methods on scalable computing systems.

It is focused on solving the Finite Element problem on shared memory as well as distributed memory architectures. The FEDomain package segregates the finite element software into two phases. The first phase includes defining the finite element problem. The user selects the mathematical problem, domain shape, domain dimensions, triangulation of the domain and formulations to compute elements' data. The second phase comprises assembly of system of equations and computing its solution. The FEDomain package concentrates on the second phase. It facilitates the user by providing the efficient implementation of the second stage using parallel algorithms. This design allows the C++ finite element application developers, with no knowledge and experience of parallel computing, to implement parallel finite element application for shared and distributed memory architectures. More specifically, FEDomain package is focused on introducing a new type of user interface. The interface requires the user to provide the mathematical problem and domain related data in terms of C++ element objects. The FEDomain assembles the system of equations, computes its solution, and provides it back to the user through element objects. The FEDomain package computes the residual vector and solution for the system of equations on shared memory and distributed memory architectures.

Book excerpt: A finite-element method has been developed which provides a detailed dynamic model for all points on a conventional parachute during its deployment and inflation. Both canopy and suspension lines are modeled as two-dimensional, flexible, distributed-mass structures. The canopy is assumed to be axisymmetric, and the effect of this assumption is discussed. The change in canopy porosity with material stretch is considered. Aerodynamic forces are included on the suspension lines. Dynamic modeling for a lines-first deployment begins at a time when both canopy and suspension lines are stowed in an accordion-folded fashion in the deployment bag. The modeling includes line deployment, canopy unfurling, canopy inflation, and disreefing. Emphasis has been placed on the types of physical forces included, and the capability and generality allowed by the model. Some simple wave motion comparisons are included. A sample of the required data for parachute deployment modeling is given. Solutions obtained with the model show the tension wave motion which occurs during deployment and early inflation.
