Book Fables Sermonettes and Parables by the Stricker 13th Century German Poet in English Translation

Download or read book Fables Sermonettes and Parables by the Stricker 13th Century German Poet in English Translation written by Stricker and published by Edwin Mellen Press. This book was released on 1999 with total page 136 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The thirteenth-century poet who used the pseudonym Der Stricker ("The Knitter) is the earliest known composer of fables, sermonettes, and parables - examples of Kleindichtung -in the German language. Some of the Stricker's fables and parables are, as far as is known, original with him, others are new variants of works that had appeared in other lands and languages. The sermonettes are typical examples of what might be called the folk-theology of the day, drawing on oral tradition rather than directly on the Scriptures. In his verse-tales, the author proves to be a keen, often harsh social critic providing a realistic, often cynical, picture of medieval society that stands in sharp contrast to the romanticism of nearly all German literature of his century. This is the first collection of The Stricker's short narratives in English translation.

Book The Parable of the Blind

Download or read book The Parable of the Blind written by Gert Hofmann and published by Verba Mundi. This book was released on 2017 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A high-water mark of postwar German literature, a profoundly skeptical meditation on the fragility of human communities and the pitfalls and contradictions of making art. A knocking on the barn door drags us out of our sleep. No, the knocking isn't inside us, it's outside, where the other people are. With that, six blind beggars--ragged, profane, irascible--find themselves waking to yet another grim day in the dark. Today, however, something is different. Today these men have an appointment with a painter: they have been hired as models, to pose for Pieter Bruegel's grotesque masterpiece-in-the-making. With tremendous verbal ingenuity and black humor, Gert Hofmann's novel follows this tattered sextet's shambling progress across a landscape in 16th century Flanders, peopled by half-heard voices and unseen dangers, towards their ultimate encounter with the great, capricious artist, and (perhaps) their own immortality.

Book Puzzling the Parables of Jesus

Download or read book Puzzling the Parables of Jesus written by Ruban Zimmermann and published by Fortress Press. This book was released on 2015-11-02 with total page 497 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Modern scholarship on the parables has long been preoccupied with asking what Jesus himself said and what he intended to accomplish with his parables. Ruben Zimmermann moves beyond that agenda to explore the dynamics of parabolic speech in all its rich complexity. Introductory chapters address the history of research and distinguish historical from literary and reader-oriented approaches, then set out a postmodern hermeneutic that analyzes narrative elements and context, maps the sociohistorical background, explores stock metaphors and symbols, and opens up contemporary horizons of interpretation. Subsequent chapters then focus on one parable from early Christian sources (Q, Mark, Matthew, Luke, John, and the Gospel of Thomas) to explore how parables function in each literary context. Over all reigns the principle that the meaning or theological "message" of a parable cannot be extracted from the parabolic form; thus the parables continue to invite hearers' and readers' involvement to the present day.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Contending that Jesus narrative parables are more poetic than metaphoric, Hedrick argues that parables should be heard solely on their own terms. Hedrick s dissatisfaction with figurative and metaphorical approaches or those that argue for a particular meaning or a single interpretation diverges sharply from the modern consensus and breaks new ground in parable studies.

Book Fables and Parables

    Book Details:
  • Author : Gotthold Ephraim Lessing
  • Publisher : Texianer Verlag
  • Release : 2021-12-20
  • ISBN :
  • Pages : 167 pages

Download or read book Fables and Parables written by Gotthold Ephraim Lessing and published by Texianer Verlag. This book was released on 2021-12-20 with total page 167 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This edition of the Fables and Parables has been reset from the original book from 1846 which was published by James Burns in London. The original spelling and grammar have been intentionally retained in order for the reader to get a feel for the culture of the time. As mentioned in the original introduction above, these fables were originally written in German and here translated into English. The editor of this edition came across this little book whilst researching for a translation of Texan history. Such a book would have undoubtedly been read to the family on Sundays and holidays and perhaps accompanied the early pioneer on his travels and daily work. They encourage and amplify the courage and strength which those early immigrants to Texas would have needed in order to be able to survive and prosper.Numbers 1 to 73 were written by Lessing, numbers 96 to 112 by Krummacher.I have added some notes based on information contained in the online encyclopedia for additional information at the end of the book.I hope you enjoy these meaningful tales as much as I have whilst composing this edition. From the original introduction:This little volume contains a selection of Fables and Parables from the German of Lessing, Herder, Krummacher, and others—few of which have hitherto been placed before the English Public—but which, when known, can hardly fail to amuse and instruct readers of every class. They possess too a specific value as being the product of the most reflecting people of modern times, and of one whose genius is particularly adapted to this kind of writing. Many of those pieces, and especially the allegorical Parables of Herder, are marked by great beauty of expression; while those of Lessing again, are amongst the best models of the Fable, strictly so called. Profound truths appertaining to the practical conduct of life are throughout.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Winner of the 2009 Christianity Today Award for Biblical Studies, Stories with Intent offers pastors and students a comprehensive and accessible guide to Jesus' parables. Klyne Snodgrass explores in vivid detail the historical context in which these stories were told, the part they played in Jesus' overall message, and the ways in which they have been interpreted in the church and the academy. Snodgrass begins by surveying the primary issues in parables interpretation and providing an overview of other parables—often neglected in the discussion—from the Old Testament, Jewish writings, and the Greco-Roman world. He then groups the more important parables of Jesus thematically and offers a comprehensive treatment of each, exploring both background and significance for today. This tenth anniversary edition includes a substantial new chapter that surveys developments in the interpretation of parables since the book's original 2008 publication.
