Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Agriculture dominates the rural economy of Papua New Guinea (PNG). More than five million rural dwellers (80% of the population) earn a living from subsistence agriculture and selling crops in domestic and international markets. Many aspects of agriculture in PNG are described in this data-rich book. Topics include agricultural environments in which crops are grown; production of food crops, cash crops and animals; land use; soils; demography; migration; the macro-economic environment; gender issues; governance of agricultural institutions; and transport. The history of agriculture over the 50 000 years that PNG has been occupied by humans is summarised. Much of the information presented is not readily available within PNG. The book contains results of many new analyses, including a food budget for the entire nation. The text is supported by 165 tables and 215 maps and figures.

Book Examining Women s Business Acumen in Papua New Guinea

Download or read book Examining Women s Business Acumen in Papua New Guinea written by Barbara Pamphilon and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 67 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "It had been assumed in Papua New Guinea that improving women's business acumen would improve economic circumstances for the women and their families. This project tested that assumption and aimed to find better ways to improve women vegetable producer smallholder's business knowledge and practices, taking account of each region's cultural and contextual issues. Researchers trialled and evaluated strategies to improve women's vegetable business knowledge and skills, develop their financial skills and create opportunities, tailoring local schemes to enhance the women's success and security. Women smallholders are key to Papua New Guinean family livelihoods; they produce essential subsistence crops while caring for their families. When they market their produce, it is for family benefit, such as school fees. This project built on the ACIAR project, ASEM/2009/042 which indicated that many women smallholders may be losing money through a lack of business acumen. That project found that low levels of business skills were exacerbated by low literacy and lack of learning opportunities. A range of women were involved in this project, including those who sold in central markets, peri-urban markets and on roadside stalls.."--Website.

Book Securing Village Life

Download or read book Securing Village Life written by Scott MacWilliam and published by ANU E Press. This book was released on 2013-05-01 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: SECURING VILLAGE LIFE: DEVELOPMENT IN LATE COLONIAL PAPUA NEW GUINEA examines the significance for post-World War II Australian colonial policy of the modern idea of development. Australian officials emphasised the importance of bringing development for both the colony of Papua and the United Nations Trust Territory of New Guinea. The principal form that development took involved securing smallholders against the tendencies of other forms of capitalist development that might have separated households from land. In order to make household occupation of their holdings more secure and at higher standards of living, the colonial administration coordinated and supervised increases in production of crops and other agricultural produce. Contrary to suggestions that colonial policy and practice ignored indigenous agriculture and concentrated on plantation crops grown by international firms and expatriate owner-occupiers, the study shows how the main focus was instead upon increasing smallholder output for immediate consumption as well as for local and international markets. Simultaneously development stimulated increases in consumption, including of goods produced through manufacturing processes and imported into the colony. Only as Independence approached was the pre-eminence of the earlier focus upon smallholders weakened. In part the change occurred due to the political advance of the indigenous capitalist class and their allies seeking to extend their base in largeholding agriculture and related commercial activities. This advance and the uncertainty over which form of development would prevail once indigenes held state power in post-colonial Papua New Guinea stood in marked contrast to the definite direction pursued under the colonial administration of the 1950s and early 1960s.

Book Improving agricultural productivity in Papua New Guinea Strategic and policy considerations

Download or read book Improving agricultural productivity in Papua New Guinea Strategic and policy considerations written by Benny, Dickson and published by Intl Food Policy Res Inst. This book was released on 2022-02-10 with total page 71 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: If smallholder farming households in Papua New Guinea achieve higher crop productivity levels, progress will be made along several dimensions of the development vision for PNG – increasing GDP for the agricultural sector and the overall economy; driving growth, diversification, and transformation of local rural economies; improving food consumption; and reducing poverty. In this paper, we examine recent data on yields for the most important crops grown in PNG, assess what yields might be achieved based on productivity data from areas of Indonesia with similar growing conditions, and sketch where policy reforms could provide incentives and access to technologies to achieve higher crop yields by all farmers across PNG.
