Book excerpt: Excerpt from Massachusetts in the American Revolution Honored by the invitation to address you upon the part borne by Massachusetts in the War of Independence, I deem it not inappropriate to preface my remarks by a rapid sketch of some of the conditions prevailing in all the colonies in the years immediately preceding the epoch of the American Revolution. If we look through that most interesting historical period - the last quarter of the eighteenth century - we shall find in America an abundance of intellectual activity. This book was released on 2017-11-22 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the Massachusetts Daughters of the American Revolution: December, 1891-December, 1905 The debts which we owe to the past, we must needs pay to the future. We live in the past by a knowledge of its history, and in the future by hope and anticipation. In view of these facts we will all agree as to the necessity of recording and preserving the anniversaries of our memo rable events, and setting up the milestones of our history. Senator Dolliver, in his address at the last Continental Congress, said that the D. A. R. In gathering up the frag ments of honor, and glory, and valor, and sacrifice, and pre serving with sacred vigilance the least name among those who were interested in laying the foundations of our national life, had caught the most beautiful idea that had ever entered into the history of this world. Mindful of the injunction to save the memorials of the past, that future generations might not forget, and that the history of the Massachusetts D. A. R. Might be put into tangi ble form for ready reference, early in 1905, a card was sent a; to each chapter in the state, asking for a brief history of the chapter, a condensed account of work done, and pictures of its patron saint or of any tablets or memorials placed. Most of the chapters responded to this appeal, and the result is most gratifying. All the reports have a thrill of life and show splendid progress, and we feel that each chapter in our state is a link in the chain which binds all the chapters of our country into one great harmonious whole. Book The Beginnings of the American Revolution Vol 1

Download or read book The Beginnings of the American Revolution Vol 1 written by Ellen Chase and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-15 with total page 462 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Beginnings of the American Revolution, Vol. 1: Based on Contemporary Letters, Diaries and Other Documents N studying the beginnings of the American Revolu tion, the remark made by John Adams that there was a revolution in men's minds that preceded the years of battle, and that the result of the war but set its seal on a severance of interests already accomplished is more and more clearly pressed home. The successive incidents that bred discord between the mother country and the Colonies are singularly rich in detail and color. Time would fail to tell the story of the period between the Peace of Paris and April 19th in full. There were clashings with stamp masters, bickerings along the water front, tumults, and tea parties up and down the land. The priceless manuscript volumes in the State Archives and the zeal of the Massachusetts Historical Society in bringing to light numerous journals and letters of the day have given unusual facilities for following these years in their relationship to Boston. If the happenings elsewhere are passed by briefly here, they are none the less memorable. The main purpose of the narrative has been to make the Outline of events in this neighborhood live once more in all their wealth of humor and picturesqueness as they were known by the actors. The interest, however, is more than local, more than contemporary, for the elements here shown at Odds are capable Of cropping out again. Taken seriously, the story Of this book may well have a practical side, considered in relation to our newly-acquired Colonial possessions. We at home hear vaguely Of these outlying parts being settled by some Of ourselves; but the conditions into which the Colonists go are but little understood and less noted. Yet, carrying our name and traditions and pluck, we must believe that their day's work will tell as the years go by.
