Book An Introduction to the Theory of Climate

Download or read book An Introduction to the Theory of Climate written by Monin and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 1986-02-28 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the last 20 years the study of, and the prediction of, changes in the climate of our planet have become an urgent social imperative, addressed to scientists the world over. The first principles on which to base such a study were formulated in 1974 in Stockholm, at the international GARP conference on the physical fundamentals of climate theory and climate modeling. In 1979 the World Meteorological Organization and the International Council of Scientific Unions decided to conduct a global program of climate research. This World Climate Program is designed mainly to investigate the variability of the climate on time scales ranging from a few weeks to a few decades and to create a scientific basis for the long-term forecasting of weather. There is at present a definite need for a monograph which can serve as an introduction to the theory of climate. On a qualitative level (without the apparatus of theoretical physics and mathematics) such an introduction has already been presented, in Part I of a book on the history of climate by Yu. A. Shishkov and the author (Monin and Shishkov, 1979). Part II of that work gives factual data on climatic changes during the course of the Earth's history. The present book is designed to provide such an introduction on a quantita tive level.

Book El Ni o in World History

Download or read book El Ni o in World History written by Richard Grove and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-12-11 with total page 251 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the role of the El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO) in society. Throughout human history, large or recurrent El Niños could cause significant disruption to societies and in some cases even contribute to political change. Yet it is only now that we are coming to appreciate the significance of the phenomenon. In this volume, Richard Grove and George Adamson chart the dual history of El Niño: as a global phenomenon capable of devastating weather extremes and, since the 18th century, as a developing idea in science and society. The chapters trace El Niño’s position in world history from its role in the revolution in Australian Aboriginal Culture at 5,000 BP to the 2015-16 ‘Godzilla’ event. It ends with a discussion of El Niño in the current media, which is as much a product of the public imagination as it is a natural process.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a giant step toward managing today's pollution problems more effectively, this report lays out a framework to coordinate an interdisciplinary and international investigation of the chemical composition and cycles of the troposphere. The approach includes geographical surveys, field measurements, the development of appropriate models, and improved instrumentation.

Book Climate Impact Assessment

Download or read book Climate Impact Assessment written by Robert W. Kates and published by . This book was released on 1985-09-24 with total page 664 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A far-reaching collection of essays that assess recent climate shifts, and the possibilities of human-induced climate alterations such as a long-term global warming derived from the enrichment of the atmospheric content of the `greenhouse' gases. International experts cover climatic variability and change, identifying climate sensitivity, the biophysical impacts of agriculture, fisheries, pastoralism, water resources, and energy resources, and social and economic impacts and adjustments.

Book Practical Geodesy

    Book Details:
  • Author : Maarten Hooijberg
  • Publisher : Springer
  • Release : 2011-12-27
  • ISBN : 9783642605857
  • Pages : 308 pages

Download or read book Practical Geodesy written by Maarten Hooijberg and published by Springer. This book was released on 2011-12-27 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Written for geodesists using computers of modest capacity, the book reviews the latest development in geodetic computation techniques. The aim is to take stock of available data (datums, ellipsoids, units etc.), to focus on applications and to illuminate spatial developments. Topics cover datums and reference systems, geodetic arc distances, different projections and coordinate systems. The material has been specially chosen and covers the practical aspect of geodesy, including the demonstration of global examples. Stressing the how-to-do approach, the book is of interest to students in geodesy, GIS consultants, hydrographers and land surveyors.

Book Seasonal Carbon Cycling in the Sargasso Sea Near Bermuda

Download or read book Seasonal Carbon Cycling in the Sargasso Sea Near Bermuda written by Nicolas Gruber and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 1999-10-04 with total page 106 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Each year, the concentration of dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) in the mixed layer at Station S in the Sargasso Sea decreases from winter to summer by about 30 umol/kg. The authors of this study demonstrate that by simultaneously observing changes in the stable isotopic ration of DIC, it is possible to quantify the contribution of physical and biological processes to this summer-fall drawdown. They find that biology is the dominant contrbutor to the drawdown, but that physical processes also play an important role.

Book Climate and Geo Sciences

Download or read book Climate and Geo Sciences written by A.L. Berger and published by Springer. This book was released on 1989-08-31 with total page 724 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It has been widely recognized recently that in order to make scientific progress on large and important problems (eg, carbon dioxide effects on climate, viability of various sites for nuclear waste disposal etc.), it is necessary to integrate knowledge from wide ranging sets of disciplines. This is certainly true in the climate sciences, for progress in understanding the cause of the ice ages or the effects of industrial pollution on the future climate or even the likelihood of severe climatic consequences in the aftermath of nuclear war. All require state-of -the -art input from many geoscience disci plines climatology, oceanography, meteorology, chemistry, ecology, glaciology, geology, astronomy, space technology, computer technology, mathematics etc. Major international meetings have called for interaction of such geo-science disciplines to solve real world problems. To move beyond the rhetorical level, the NATO Special Programme on Global Transport Mechanisms in the Geo-Sciences whose activities started in 1983, deci ded to organise his closing symposium on such a topic which focus on the relationship between climate and geo-sciences. This symposium was held at the end of May 1988 at the Universite Catholique de Louvain, Louvain-Ia-Neuve, Belgium. One hundred-and-thirty participants from the 16 NATO countries and a number of non-NATO countries assembled for the Symposium. Another feature was the attendance by special invitation of 16 pro mising young scientists who might well become leading scientists on climate and geo-sciences in their respective countries in the next century.
