Book excerpt: Excerpt from Reports and Papers on Botany The organization of the Stem of Palms undoubtedly exhibits common characters throughout all species: it is simple (except in Hyp/mne), almost cylindrical, generally upright, encircled by the scars of the leaves which sur round the stem, but without true nodes; fixed to the earth by slender fibrous roots; having at the apex a tuft of leaves, in the axils of which stand the spadices. The internal structure is, generally speaking, as follows: the groundwork of the whole stem is an uniform, lax paren chyma, in which lie, scattered irregularly, slender vascular bundles, running apparently parallel with the axis of the stem; those lying nearest to the circumference of the stem are mostly thicker; of a more woody consistence, and placed closer together than those situated in the interior; from this circumstance, the stem often possesses yery considerable solidity toward the periphery. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Plant-Life Popular Papers on the Phenomena of Botany The author.it certainly is a marked advantage in the study of natural history that it leads you on by the hand; it inveigles you, if I may say so, into learning what is good and what is useful. Many a one might have his mind first opened to the attractions of natural history, which mind if once opened, might perhaps be capable of applying itself beneficially to harder and more repulsive studies. These analogies of natural history are invaluable; they have a most gracious effect in developing the finer faculties of the mind they establish a connection between the different portions of creation. -right Hon. Book Botany Classic Reprint

Download or read book Botany Classic Reprint written by Herbert M. Richards and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-01 with total page 44 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Botany What is the content and scope of the science of botany? Popular opinion will answer somewhat easily: Botany consists in the gathering of plants, and the dismembering of them, in connection with the use of a complicated terminology. That is the beginning and end of botany as it is understood by the majority; there is nothing more to be said. In consequence, the employment of the botanist seems so trivial, so very remote from important human interests that no second thought is given to it. The conception formed in ignorance is continued in ignorance. Even the zoologist is at an advantage, for the public is finally forced to admit that it does not know what he is about, while it understands the botanist very well. He is quite hopeless, for, while flowers may be pretty things to pick, they should not be pulled to pieces, and if he does not happen to be interested in dissecting flowers he is not a botanist but simply a fraud. Far from being remote, the study of plants comes very close to human interests. One has but to stop to think that plants are the great energy source for man himself and the animals upon which his well-being depends, to recognize that a careful study of their manner of life, the conditions which favor or hinder their growth is of the very first importance. Book Outlines of the History of Botany Classic Reprint

Download or read book Outlines of the History of Botany Classic Reprint written by R. J. Harvey-Gibson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-09-12 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Outlines of the History of Botany The following brief sketch of the history of botany makes no claim to originality save in the mode of presentation of the subject-matter. It comprises the substance of a course Of lectures given to students Of the University of Liverpool during their third year Of residence, and has for its object the discussion of the more important features in the advance of botanical knowledge from the earliest times down to, approximately, the present day. The ordinary university student, in the course of an already overcrowded curriculum, has only the minimum of time to devote to the study of the history of the science, and not always the knowledge or experience requisite to form a proper estimate of the relative values of the results achieved by the numberless investigators whose names appear on the pages of the larger text-books, still less to picture for himself in correct perspective, the evolution of the science as a whole. These lectures, it is hoped, may in some measure aid him in attaining these ends, so far as the history of botany is concerned. Much has been omitted that another writer might have included exigencies of time and space must serve as excuse for such omissions. Some aspects Of the subject have been expanded, not unduly it is hoped, that others might prefer to treat more briefly or to omit altogether. Book An University Text Book of Botany Classic Reprint

Download or read book An University Text Book of Botany Classic Reprint written by Douglas Houghton Campbell and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-22 with total page 630 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An University Text-Book of Botany Continuous change is necessary in order that the material universe may remain in its present condition. Since the amount of matter is constant, it follows that the particles Of matter must be capable Of dissociation and recombination, otherwise, sooner or later, a stable condition is reached which is incompatible with the existence of life. Living organisms, plants and animals, are the most important agents upon the earth in this redistribution of matter. The inert, inorganic substances are decomposed through the activity of living organisms, the components being united with others into the innumerable com pounds of which living substances are composed. The organic com pounds in turn undergo repeated changes Within the organism, which may itself serve as food for others. The simpler compounds result ing from the chemical changes within the organism may remain inert, like the masses of limestone developed from the skeletons of coral polyps, or the fiinty deposits left by the accumulated Shells of Diatoms; or, like carbon-dioxide, they may again be utilized as food for plants. It is the province of biology, in its broadest sense, to study the part played by plants and animals in the economy of nature - their relation to each other and to the inorganic world. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Students' Text-Book of Botany When, some few years ago, it became necessary to revise the English Edition of the late Prof. Prantl's Lehrbuch der Botanik, it appeared to me that the requirements of English students would be more satisfactorily met if the scope of the work were so extended that, whilst retaining all that has made it of value to beginners, it might be more useful to those engaged in the advanced study of the science. With this object in view, the number of pages has been doubled by additions to all four parts of the book, but more especially to Part III. Dealing with the Classification of Plants. Download or read book A Text Book of Botany Classic Reprint written by EDUARD. STRASBURGER and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-09 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A d104-Book of Botany IT is customary to place all living beings in either the animal 01 vegetable kingdoms, but in reality a sharp boundary line between animals and plants first becomes possible when they exhibit a complicated structure. In those of more simple organisation all distinctions disappear, and it becomes difficult to define the exact limits of Botany and Zoology. This, in fact, could scarcely be otherwise, as all the processes of life, in both the animal and vegetable kingdoms, are dependent On the same substance, protoplasm. With more complicated organisation, the specific differences increase, and the characteristics distinguishing animal from vegetable life become more obvious. For the present, it must be confessed, the recognition Of an organism, as an animal or a plant, is dependent upon its corre spondence with an abstract idea of what a plant or animal Should be, .based on certain points of agreement between the members of each class. A satisfactory basis for the Separation of all living organisms into the categories of animals or plants can only be obtained when it is shown that all organisms distinguished as animals are in reality genetically connected, and that a similar connection exists between all plants. The proof of this can only be arrived at through the theory OF evolution. From the study of the fossil remains and impressions Of animals and plants, it has been established that in former epochs forms Of life. Differing from those of the present age existed on the earth. It is also generally assumed that all living animals and plants have been derived by gradual modification from previously existing forms. This leads to the further conclusion that those organisms possess ing closely Similar structure, which are united as species in a genus, are in reality related to one another. It is also probable that the union of corresponding genera into one familv and of families into higher groups serves to give expression to a real relationship existing between them.
