In addition to his Nobel Prize-winning work in superconductivity, Prof Schrieffer has made significant contributions to a wide variety of topics in condensed matter physics. These include the theory of soliton excitations in polyacetylene (a clear example of spin-charge separation in a condensed matter system), paramagnon theory, magnetic impurities, the physics of surfaces, high-Tc superconductivity, and the fractional quantum Hall effect. The papers are reviewed and placed in context by leading experts. The guest contributors are A Alexandrov (on electrons and phonons), T Einstein (on surfaces,) S Kivelson (on quantum Hall effect), D Scalapino (on the BCS theory of superconductivity), F Wilczek (on solitons and fractional quantum numbers), J W Wilkins (on magnetic impurities) and S C Zhang (on high-Tc superconductivity).

Book The Allstons of Chicora Wood

Download or read book The Allstons of Chicora Wood written by William Kauffman Scarborough and published by LSU Press. This book was released on 2011-11-07 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: William Kauffman Scarborough's absorbing biography, The Allstons of Chicora Wood, chronicles the history of a South Carolina planter family from the opulent antebellum years through the trauma of the Civil War and postwar period. Scarborough's examination of this extraordinarily enterprising family focuses on patriarch Robert R. F. W. Allston, his wife Adele Petigru Allston, and their daughter Elizabeth Allston Pringle Scarborough. Scarborough shows how Allston, in the four decades before the Civil War, converted a small patrimony into a Lowcountry agricultural empire of seven rice plantations, all the while earning an international reputation for the quality of his rice and his expertise. Scarborough also examines Allston's twenty-eight-year career in the state legislature and as governor from 1856 to 1858. Upon his death in 1864, Robert Allston's wife of thirty-two years, Adele, found herself at the head of the family. Scarborough traces how she successfully kept the family plantations afloat in the postwar years through a series of decisions that exhibited her astute business judgment and remarkable strength of character. In the next generation, one of the Allstons' five children followed a similar path. Elizabeth "Bessie" Allston took over management of the remaining family plantations upon the death of her husband and, in order to pay off the plantation mortgages, embarked on a highly successful literary career. Bessie authored two books, the first treating her experiences as a woman rice planter and the second describing her childhood before the war. A major contribution to southern history, The Allstons of Chicora Wood provides a fascinating look at a prominent southern family that survived the traumas of war and challenges of Reconstruction.

Download or read book Hitler s Bounty Hunters written by Ad van Liempt and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2005-04-01 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why were the Nazis so successful in deporting Jews? Why did families such as Anne Frank's get turned in? Investigative journalist Ad van Liempt pulls back the curtain on the shocking practice of Dutch bounty hunters of the Jews, and reveals that ordinary citizens were prepared to turn over their Jewish countrymen in exchange for cash.Van Liempt examines in great detail the careers of bounty hunters and describes some particularly horrifying cases. The most gripping are those involving young children. In one case, two bounty hunters traveled hundreds of miles to get their hands on a two-year-old girl living in a safe house; a month later she was gassed at Sobibor. In court, the bounty hunters consistently maintained that they received no premiums for their work, but the author shows the opposite to be true and traces the money involved. This haunting book uncovers a facet of the Holocaust that has previously been largely neglected and brings to light the day-to-day workings of the persecution of the Jews.
