Download or read book Building Social Capital in Thailand written by Danny Unger and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1998-09-28 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Between 1984 and 1994 Thailand had the most rapid economic expansion in the world. This 1998 book offers an explanation of this successful record of economic growth in Thailand, and in Southeast Asia more generally. The book explains why Thai leaders adopted a market-driven strategy from the late 1950s, and also shows how the overseas Chinese in Thailand built on their community's social capital to overcome the market failures common to all developing countries. Unger takes an interdisciplinary approach, building on the literatures of social capital and embedded autonomy. He considers the unique organization of Thai society, and the impact this has had on the country's institutions, and their political and economic outcomes. The book includes detailed analysis of the financial and textile sectors, as well as the development of heavy industries and transportation infrastructure.

Download or read book The Nation and Economic Growth written by Kunio Yoshihara and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 1994 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book, a comparative study of the Philippines and Thailand, breaks new ground by highlighting the impact of non-economic institutions and cultural, kinship, and political values on economic performance. The Philippines and Thailand, two developing South-East Asian countries which faced similar situations and problems after the Pacific War, pursued divergent paths in shaping their destiny. The results have been dramatic, especially when we consider that postwar, the Philippines' per capita GNP was twice that of Thailand's, but by the end of the period under study, the position had reversed. In examining the factors that influenced this transformation, the author elucidates the response of both countries to the economic dominance of the Chinese minority and their attitude towards foreign investment. He analyses their government's intervention in the market economy, including a discussion of the traditions of their central banks and the role played by their military establishments. He also focuses on their handling of peace and order; issues include the Communist insurgency, Muslim separatism, military coups, and serious crime, culminating in a discourse on traditional values.

Download or read book Japanese Direct Foreign Investments written by Karl Boger and published by Greenwood. This book was released on 1989-08-22 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Japan's remarkable penetration into foreign markets in industries ranging from automobiles to semiconductors has fueled great interest in Japanese foreign investment. Japan now exerts tremendous influence over the international economy. Backed by statistics and theory, this definitive work examines Japanese direct foreign investments around the world and across various industries since World War II. It explores Japan's overseas acquisitions in all corners of the globe, the internationalization of its financial services industry and the roots of its foreign investment including the rebuilding of its economy after World War II and its success in technological domination of key industries. The study begins with a general theoretical and historical overview of Japanese overseas investment. It then focuses on individual regions and countries in the world including the United States, Canada, Latin America, Europe, Africa, Asia, and the Pacific Ocean region. Particular attention is addressed to the United States and Southeast Asia, the areas where most of Japan's overseas investments are concentrated. This work will be of interest to economists, businessmen, historians, scholars, and students of international business or economics. Businessmen and economists will find this book especially valuable with its leads on Japanese economic and corporate success.
Download or read book The WEB of Transport Corridors in South Asia written by Asian Development Bank;JICA;UKAID;World Bank and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2018-03-19 with total page 403 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The WEB of Transport Corridors in South Asia develops a holistic appraisal methodology to ensure that economic benefits of investments in transport corridors are amplified and more widely spread, and possible negative impacts such as congestion, environmental degradation, and other unintended consequences are minimized. It focuses on South Asia—not only as one of the world’s most populous and poorest regions—but as a hinge between East Asia, Central Asia, the Middle East, and Europe. The book is aimed at politicians, technocrats, civil society organizations, and businesses. It presents case studies of past and recent corridor initiatives, provides rigorous analysis of the literature on the spatial impact of corridors, and offers assessments of corridor investment projects supported by international development organizations. A series of spotlights examines such issues as private sector co-investment; the impacts of corridors on small enterprises and women; and issues with implementing cross-border corridors. The 'WEB' in the title stands for both the wider economic benefits (WEB) that transport corridors are expected to generate and the complex web of transport corridors that has been proposed. The appraisal methodology introduced in this book shows how the web of interconnected elements around corridors can be disentangled and the most promising corridor proposals—the ones with the greatest wider economic benefits—can be selected.
