Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Papaya Culture in Hawaii Papaya (uarica papaya) investigations have been conducted at the Hawaii Agricultural Experiment Station since 1902. During the past eight years the investigations have been confined prin cipally to a determination Of the cultural requirements and methods Of improving the species. Completion Of the work has been greatly retarded because Of the unsettled habits Of the plant. Its tendency to exhibit marked variations in nature and growth Of fruit was Observed in other countries by Correa de mello and Spruce (15, p. In 1869, by Forbes p. 313) in 1879, by solms-laubach (18) in 1889, by Iorns (10) in 1908, and by Kulkarni (12) in 1915. Wells (22) in 1906 published a general article on the papaya in Hawaii, and Higgins and Holt (9) in 1914 reported the results Of crossbreeding the papaya at the Hawaii station. This bulletin, which supplements and brings up to date the pre vious bulletin of the Hawaii station by Higgins and Holt has been prepared to meet the demand for information on practical ways of growing the papaya in Hawaii and elsewhere. Book The Story of the Papaw Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Story of the Papaw Classic Reprint written by Fred B. Kilmer and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-06 with total page 38 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Story of the Papaw Quite universal is the knowledge of the unique property that has given to this tree its world-wide fame, viz.: the power of its milky juice to soften and dissolve tough meat. The statement has passed current in our journals that the emanations from this tree will dissolve and digest albumin. And that it is the custom of the natives to hang meat and chickens in the branches of a tree to render them tender and edible. The natives often go further than this; they state that if male animals browse under the papaw tree, they become emasculated. If we com pare this statement with the alleged property of the roots as a gener ative tonic, we shall have a marvelous combination of an aphrodisiac and an anaphrodisiac in the same plant. It is needless to urge that such stories are exaggerations ol the pepsin - like propertiesof the fruit. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Cultivation of Neglected Tropical Fruits with Promise Vol 2

Download or read book Cultivation of Neglected Tropical Fruits with Promise Vol 2 written by Narciso Almeyda and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-28 with total page 22 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Cultivation of Neglected Tropical Fruits With Promise, Vol. 2: The Mamey Sapote In many countries of South America, the es teem in which the mamey sapote is held is shown by the habit of leaving these trees undisturbed when deforesting a new piece of land. The old trees found in the forest today are often signs of places that were previously inhabited. Now, with impetus from new crops and with new tech niques for planting, this practice of conserving these trees is disappearing, and in some areas the fruit is difficult to obtain. Few countries have had the foresight to pre serve this important resource, but the Cubans feel that no other fruit can be compared With the mamey sapote. There is currently a great demand for this fruit in the continental United States and'in other places where Cubans have settled. IACP AWARD FINALIST • ONE OF THE BEST COOKBOOKS OF THE YEAR: Time Out, Food52 Whether she’s frying up a batch of her crispy-garlicky wings for John’s football Sundays or making Chrissy her favorite afternoon snack—instant ramen noodles with ground pork, cabbage, scallions, and cilantro—Pepper Teigen loves feeding her famously fabulous family. Through these eighty recipes, Pepper teaches you how to make all her hits. You’ll find playful twists on Thai classics, such as Fried Chicken Larb, which is all crunch with lots of lime, chile, and fish sauce, and Pad Thai Brussels Sprouts, which bring the fun tastes and textures of pad thai to a healthy sheet of pan-roasted vegetables. And there are the traditional dishes Pepper grew up with, like khao tod crispy rice salad and tom zapp hot and sour soup. Pepper shares stories about her life, too, such as how she used to sell sweet-savory kanom krok coconut-and-corn pancakes to commuters when she was ten years old in Thailand (now she makes them with her granddaughter, Luna, as a treat) and how, once she moved to the United States, she would cobble together tastes of home with ingredients she could find in her new homeland, like turning shredded cabbage and carrots into a mock-papaya salad. Influenced by Thailand, California, and everywhere in between, Pepper’s mouthwatering recipes and sharp sense of humor will satisfy anyone craving a taste of something sensational, whether that’s a peek into America’s most-talked- about family’s kitchen or a rich and spicy spoonful of Massaman Beef Curry.
