Primary emphasis is on phonological restrictions, grammatical liberties, and semantic embellishments. The first chapter describes Tina Sambal poetic genres and their use, focusing on the changing use of songs and poems, 11 specific song types (religious poetry, hortatory songs, life-story songs, entertaining songs, comical songs, compositions for special occasions, poems, serenading and caroling songs, courting songs, love letters, and sad love songs), functions of Tina Sambal songs and poems, traditional singing customs, and comparison with other Philippine languages. The second chapter examines the Tina Sambal poetic conventions, and the third chapter offers a brief conclusion. A separate section--and the longest in the book--consists of a "Chrestomathy" containing typical Tina Sambal poems and songs and an excerpt from one Tina Sambal Passion, each with an introduction and free translation, grouped according to genre. Appended materials include notes on typical features of Tina Sambal orthography and grammar; terms relating to poetry and song; esoteric words used; an index of authors, singers, and contributors; transcriptions of song melodies; and a list of available recorded songs. It is to be observed that the author has kept more or less to the traditional sense of words while not altogether ignoring the meanings given by western scholars in their translations and lexicons. Many errors in the latter sources have also been rectified. But the basic sense adopted is in nearly every instance the traditionally accepted meaning in accord with the commentaries and the glossaries. This perhaps is of special value to beginners as thereby they get introduced to the indigenous tradition, thus providing a useful basis on which to build up a more scientific knowledge as the study advances.
