Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Armed with percussion rifles when most other US soldiers still carried flintlock muskets, the “Mississippi Rifles” served in the war against Mexico that followed the annexation of Texas in 1845. In Panting for Glory: The Mississippi Rifles in the Mexican War, Richard Bruce Winders skillfully uncovers the contrasting wartime experiences of two regiments, the 1st and 2nd Mississippi Rifles. The 1st Mississippi Rifles were lauded for their service and remain a familiar part of the history of the Mexican War. Under the leadership of Col. Jefferson Davis—later the President of the Confederate States of America—the 1st enjoyed significant victories at the Battle of Buena Vista and the Battle of Monterey. The 2nd Mississippi Rifles, by contrast, saw little action and returned home overlooked and largely forgotten. Panting for Glory compares these regiments to show that the contours of history were sometimes arbitrary and that military historians, in their analysis of failure, should take into account a wide range of factors that influence outcomes, not merely records of wins and losses. As Winders concludes, “the 1st and 2nd Mississippi Rifles . . . offer the perfect opportunity to examine two sides of war: glory gained and glory denied.”

Book excerpt: Drawing on numerous diaries, journals, and reminiscences, Richard Bruce Winders presents the daily life of soldiers at war; links the army to the society that produced it; shares his impressions of the soldiers he "met" along the way; and concludes that American participants in the Mexican War shared a common experience, no matter their rank or place of service. Taking a "new" military history approach, Mr. Polk's Army: The American Military Experience in the Mexican War examines the cultural, social, and political aspects of the regular and volunteer forces that made up the army of 1846-48, presents the organizational framework of the army, and introduces the different styles of leadership exhibited by Zachary Taylor and Winfield Scott.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Anniversary is a thought-provoking play that mirrors the socio-political challenges faced by many Africans, particularly in Cameroon. The narrative unravels the nonchalance of a dictatorial regime to the suffering of its people and the eventual uprising against the long-standing oppressive leadership. The play highlights the theme of unity, the role of women, and people’s power as critical elements in fighting against oppressive systems. It draws parallels with the political landscape in Cameroon, offering a prophetic reflection on the enduring nature of such regimes and the need to flush them out in order for the people to be truly free.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Winner, Clotilde P. Garcia Tejano Book Prize The opening campaign of the US-Mexican War transformed the map of each nation and shaped the course of conflict. Armed with a broad range of Mexican military documents and previously unknown US sources, Douglas Murphy provides the first balanced view of early battles such as Palo Alto and Resaca de la Palma. He reassesses previously covered territory and also poses new questions. Why did Mexico establish its defenses south of the Rio Grande while claiming territory north of the river? What was Mexico’s strategy in the campaign against the United States? What factors most affected Mexico’s defeat? In confronting these questions, Murphy shows that the campaign was a complex chess match with undercurrents of political intrigue, economic motivations, and personal animosities as much as military action. Two Armies on the Rio Grande will transform our understanding of the US-Mexican War.

Book excerpt: The book, Glory: The Struggle for Yards are stories gathered together to illustrate the unique cultures, history and values that unite people of all races together. It is so much more than a book of facts and individual's personal accomplishments. Glory share stories that include powerful messages that can inspire, teach, and influence others to achieve their goals in life. These stories bring facts to life and have the ability to connect the past with the present. We start with diversity and inclusion by respecting, understanding and appreciating each other's humanities and beliefs and most of all reading to know for your own gratification and personal experiences. These stories promote a positive attitude through football legends hardships, fears and never losing desire for taking care of their families and leaving a legacy for the future generation to understand their challenges, difficulties, misfortune and adversities. We have to remember before writing books; ancestors told stories by cave painting on the wall, as they would blow the paint through hollow bones very similar to today's airbrushing. Campfires was also a form of storytelling performed around an open fire at night and mostly in the wilderness. We see it in today modern campfires stories with Girls Scouts and Boy Scouts of America and even with good old family reunion barbecue in the front or backyard. Glory is a book of legendary football stories that helps us understand our differences in culture with other peoples so that we can connect and communicate in love and make new friends through story telling.
