Book excerpt: Excerpt from Pandurang Hari, Vol. 2 of 3: Or Memoirs of a Hindoo My position. I ventured to look again, and her form was gone. I now gathered courage, and was getting towards the brink slowly but steadily, when the haggard vi sage of the woman again met my gaze. Her eyes were fixed sternly and fiercely upon me. I.continued to hold fast by the stump of a tree, growing from the almost perpendicular side of the hollow, for a moment or two. At once my knees began to shake under me, my hands relaxed from their hold, and down I fell to: the bottom of the pit, upon'the dead body of Govin dah, which I had deposited directly under the place where I attempted to climb up. The covering of rubbish 'i had laid upon itwas but scanty; and the body Served to break the violence of my falls. I'did not escape, however, unhurt; having sprained B 2. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Pandurang Hàrì, Vol. 1 of 2: Or Memoirs of a Hindoo Again, except to a few adventurers, bear-hunters, or district police-officers, the robber's cave is probably now as obsolete in India' as it is in England, or any other country where it has been relegated to the theatrical pro perties of melodramatic managers. But long after peace and uniform Government had been restored to the Deccan, genuine robber's caves, such as are described by Pandu rang, were to be found in many remote districts. Some of the old Bhuddist cave temples, which are scattered so plentifully along the whole range of the Western Ghauts, were used as robber retreats to within a comparatively recent period, and thirty years ago robber-caves might have been found within a walk or ride of the now fashion able sanitarium of Mahabuleshwar, close to roads now frequented by English nurses and their infantile charges, and within sight of plantations of chincona plants brought from the Andes by Mr Clements Markham. One such cave in the laterite rock, overlooking the' ancient road from Wace to the sacred sources of the Krishna and its sister rivers, just where the road branches to the fortress of Pretabghur and to the sea-port of Mhar, though now in the heart of the hill station, was pointed out to me some years ago by one of the elders of the Gaolees (hill herds men), as the place where, in his father's time, a robber band, with which the poor hill herdsmen dared not meddle. Book Revelry Rivalry and Longing for the Goddesses of Bengal

Download or read book Revelry Rivalry and Longing for the Goddesses of Bengal written by Rachel Fell McDermott and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2011 with total page 392 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Annually during the months of autumn, Bengal hosts three interlinked festivals to honor its most important goddesses: Durga, Kali, and Jagaddhatri. While each of these deities possesses a distinct iconography, myth, and character, they are all martial. Durga, Kali, and Jagaddhatri often demand blood sacrifice as part of their worship and offer material and spiritual benefits to their votaries. Richly represented in straw, clay, paint, and decoration, they are similarly displayed in elaborately festooned temples, thronged by thousands of admirers. The first book to recount the history of these festivals and their revelry, rivalry, and nostalgic power, this volume marks an unprecedented achievement in the mapping of a major public event. Rachel Fell McDermott describes the festivals' origins and growth under British rule. She identifies their iconographic conventions and carnivalesque qualities and their relationship to the fierce, Tantric sides of ritual practice. McDermott confronts controversies over the tradition of blood sacrifice and the status-seekers who compete for symbolic capital. Expanding her narrative, she takes readers beyond Bengal's borders to trace the transformation of the goddesses and their festivals across the world. McDermott's work underscores the role of holidays in cultural memory, specifically the Bengali evocation of an ideal, culturally rich past. Under the thrall of the goddess, the social, political, economic, and religious identity of Bengalis takes shape.

Book The Dhvany loka of nandavardhana with the Locana of Abhinavagupta

Download or read book The Dhvany loka of nandavardhana with the Locana of Abhinavagupta written by Ānandavardhana and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 1990 with total page 854 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For nearly a thousand years the brilliant analysis of aesthetic experience set forth in the Locana of Abhinavagupta, India's founding literary critic, has dominated traditional Indian theory on poetics and aesthetics. The Locana, presented here in English translation for the first time, is a commentary on the ninth-century Dhvanyaloka of Anandavardhana, which is itself the pivotal work in the history of Indian poetics. The Dhvanyaloka revolutionized Sanskrit literary theory by proposing that the main goal of good poetry is the evocation of a mood or "flavor" (rasa) and that this process can be explained only by recognizing a semantic power beyond denotation and metaphor, namely, the power of suggestion. On the basis of this analysis the Locana develops a theory of the psychology of aesthetic response. This edition is the first to make the two most influential works of traditional Sanskrit literary and aesthetic theory fully accessible to readers who want to know more about Sanskrit literature. The editorial annotations furnish the most complete exposition available of the history and content of these works. In addition, the verses presented as examples by both authors (offered here in verse translation) form an anthology of some of the finest Sanskrit and Prakrit poetry.

Book Representations of India 1740 1840

Download or read book Representations of India 1740 1840 written by A. Chatterjee and published by Springer. This book was released on 1998-05-13 with total page 237 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Chatterjee analyzes how writing over the period of a century justified and was affected by the introduction and extension of British domination of India, demonstrating the link between written representations and the ideological, economic and political climate and debates. By showing how the representations of Britons in India, Indian religion and society and government evolved over the period 1740 to 1840, the author fills the gap between the early colonial 'exotic East' and the later 'primitive subject nation' perceptions.
