Well beyond its health effects, the pandemic has wrought major changes in people’s everyday lives as they confront restrictions imposed by physical distancing and consequences such as loss of work, working or learning from home and reduced contact with family and friends. This edited collection covers a diverse range of experiences, practices and representations across international contexts and cultures (UK, Europe, North America, South Africa, Australia and New Zealand). Together, these contributions offer a rich account of COVID society. They provide snapshots of what life was like for people in a variety of situations and locations living through the first months of the novel coronavirus crisis, including discussion not only of health-related experiences but also the impact on family, work, social life and leisure activities. The socio-material dimensions of quotidian practices are highlighted: death rituals, dating apps, online musical performances, fitness and exercise practices, the role of windows, healthcare work, parenting children learning at home, moving in public space as a blind person and many more diverse topics are explored. In doing so, the authors surface the feelings of strangeness and challenges to norms of practice that were part of many people’s experiences, highlighting the profound affective responses that accompanied the disruption to usual cultural forms of sociality and ritual in the wake of the COVID outbreak and restrictions on movement. The authors show how social relationships and social institutions were suspended, re-invented or transformed while social differences were brought to the fore. At the macro level, the book includes localised and comparative analyses of political, health system and policy responses to the pandemic, and highlights the differences in representations and experiences of very different social groups, including people with disabilities, LGBTQI people, Dutch Muslim parents, healthcare workers in France and Australia, young adults living in northern Italy, performing artists and their audiences, exercisers in Australia and New Zealand, the Latin cultures of Spain and Italy, Asian-Americans and older people in Australia. In addition to the number of patients infected with the SARS virus, the disease had profound economic and political repercussions in many of the affected regions. Recent reports of isolated new SARS cases and a fear that the disease could reemerge and spread have put public health officials on high alert for any indications of possible new outbreaks. This report examines the response to SARS by public health systems in individual countries, the biology of the SARS coronavirus and related coronaviruses in animals, the economic and political fallout of the SARS epidemic, quarantine law and other public health measures that apply to combating infectious diseases, and the role of international organizations and scientific cooperation in halting the spread of SARS. Book excerpt: The COVID-19 pandemic has had a negative impact on small businesses, substantially accelerating business failure and adversely affecting financial viability. We consider these issues in the context of the fitness sector. The pandemic shifted patterns of human mobility, whereby the operating model of the fitness sector was suddenly negatively impacted by digital substitution. The sudden availability of digital exercising options raises questions about how digital substitution works in the manner by which consumers use fitness centers in the short and long term. We examine these issues using individual-level anonymized app usage and gym attendance data. We complement our individual-level analysis with aggregate analysis using foot traffic from Safegraph and combine this information with internet search data for fitness before and after the start of the pandemic. The mandated lockdowns and re-openings across states provide us with a natural experiment to examine the impact of digital substitution in the fitness sector both in the short-term and the long-term. By using staggered adoption of individual fitness app usage and gym attendance data based on GPS location, we can uniquely identify individual substitution patterns for about 17 months. We find that while there was a large digital substitution in the short term, this substitution waned after December 2020. Similarly, we show that gym attendance dropped at an aggregate level with increased search intensity for fitness-related keywords until December 2020, and then this association mostly disappears in the beginning of 2021. We find that the digital displacement is driven by the proximity to fitness centers, franchise arrangements in the fitness sector, and local political conditions. Our results highlight that fitness and wellness are highly localized and sensitive to local variations in public health and well-being. We find evidence that fitness apps substituted in person visits to gyms when people had access to high-speed internet.

However, it is important to recognize all the other comorbidities and mortality risk that goes along with the lack of exercise and physical activity. The APFP was started in the late 1960s by Dr. Bud Getchell and has operated continuously since its inception. The mission of the APFP mirrors the educational, research, and service missions of Ball State University. The APFP is designed for adults research, and service missions of Ball State University. The APFP is designed for adults who can be classified as low or moderate risk for developing cardiovascular disease (according to national guidelines from health and medical organizations); however, the program does provide services for some individuals with chronic diseases. This project will look at the PA status of 39 apparently healthy adults (25 men and 14 women) from the Adult Physical Fitness Program (APFP), evaluating overall health and effects of being physically active or physically inactive during the lockdown due to the global pandemic. This protocol was guided by the APFP staff structured as a self-reported survey as well as manual blood pressures and body weight that was gathered pre and post pandemic. In this study we hope to find strong evidence to support exercise is medicine for the treatment of isolation during COVID-19. The conclusion of this study provided evidence judging that exercise is an affective intervention on elderly (44-86 YO) APFP participants, and will help aid in guiding further intervention and researches within the realm of exercise as medicine.

A lack of activity increases the risk of heart disease, colon and breast cancer, diabetes mellitus, hypertension, osteoporosis, anxiety and depression and others diseases. Emerging literature has suggested that in terms of mortality, the global population health burden of physical inactivity approaches that of cigarette smoking. The prevalence and substantial disease risk associated with physical inactivity has been described as a pandemic. The prevalence, health impact, and evidence of changeability all have resulted in calls for action to increase physical activity across the lifespan. In response to the need to find ways to make physical activity a health priority for youth, the Institute of Medicine's Committee on Physical Activity and Physical Education in the School Environment was formed. Its purpose was to review the current status of physical activity and physical education in the school environment, including before, during, and after school, and examine the influences of physical activity and physical education on the short and long term physical, cognitive and brain, and psychosocial health and development of children and adolescents. Educating the Student Body makes recommendations about approaches for strengthening and improving programs and policies for physical activity and physical education in the school environment. This report lays out a set of guiding principles to guide its work on these tasks. These included: recognizing the benefits of instilling life-long physical activity habits in children; the value of using systems thinking in improving physical activity and physical education in the school environment; the recognition of current disparities in opportunities and the need to achieve equity in physical activity and physical education; the importance of considering all types of school environments; the need to take into consideration the diversity of students as recommendations are developed. This report will be of interest to local and national policymakers, school officials, teachers, and the education community, researchers, professional organizations, and parents interested in physical activity, physical education, and health for school-aged children and adolescents.
