Book Colombian Theatre in the Vortex

Download or read book Colombian Theatre in the Vortex written by Judith A. Weiss and published by Bucknell University Press. This book was released on 2004 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book chronicles three decades of social and political disintegration in a nation marked by violence, paradox, and hyperbole, a country both blessed and cursed by its wealth of natural resources, its culture, and its strategic location in the western hemisphere. The plays (Soldiers [C. J. Reyes et al.]; Old Baldy [Jairo Nino]; Lucky Strike [Santiago Garcia]; Roadhouse [Teatro La Candelaria]; Pilot Project [Enrique Buenaventura]; Femina Ludens [Nohora Ayala et al.]; and The Orgy [Enrique Buenaventura]) reveal the historical, economic, and social roots of Colombia's tragic circumstances. They are vehicles of critical analysis for making sense of both the causes and the consequences of the violence, as they examine the role of the army, the roots of the drug wars, the situation of women and victims of conflict, and the poisoning of a common ethos. The translations and introductory notes make the works and their subjects equally accessible for staging in the theater and for readings and discussion by groups interested in Latin American Studies. Judith A. Weiss is Professor of Hispanic Studies at Mount Allison University in Canada.

Book History of the Inquisition of Spain

Download or read book History of the Inquisition of Spain written by Henry Charles Lea and published by e-artnow. This book was released on 2020-12-17 with total page 1786 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "A History of the Inquisition of Spain" in 4 volumes is one of the best-known works by the American historian Henry Charles Lea. The Spanish Inquisition (officially known as the "Tribunal of the Holy Office of the Inquisition") was established in 1478 by Catholic Monarchs Ferdinand II of Aragon and Isabella I of Castile. It was intended to maintain Catholic orthodoxy in their kingdoms and to replace the Medieval Inquisition, which was under Papal control. It became the most substantive of the three different manifestations of the wider Catholic Inquisition along with the Roman Inquisition and Portuguese Inquisition. The Inquisition was originally intended primarily to identify heretics among those who converted from Judaism and Islam to Catholicism. The regulation of the faith of newly converted Catholics was intensified after the royal decrees issued in 1492 and 1502 ordering Muslims and Jews to convert to Catholicism or leave Castile. The Inquisition was not definitively abolished until 1834, during the reign of Isabella II, after a period of declining influence in the preceding century. The Spanish Inquisition is often cited in popular literature and history as an example of religious intolerance and repression.

Book Photography in Latin America

Download or read book Photography in Latin America written by Gisela Cánepa Koch and published by transcript Verlag. This book was released on 2016-05-31 with total page 243 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Historical photographs taken in Latin America have now become key sites for memory politics, ethnographic imagination, and the negotiation of identity. This volume opens up a set of questions relating to the contemporaneous agency of images as well as their current appropriation via new technologies. Case studies of pictures taken in Mexico, Colombia, Peru and Brazil analyze these processes by tracing how the images have been resignified over time and space. The contributions examine photographs that have been recently rediscovered by such diverse actors as European museums, human rights organizations, anthropologists, shamans, local historians, and communities of internet users.

Human Emerging and Re-emerging Infections covers the epidemiology, pathogenesis, diagnostics, clinical features, and public health risks posed by new viral and microbial infections. The book includes detailed coverage on the molecular mechanisms of pathogenesis, development of various diagnostic tools, diagnostic assays and their limitations, key research priorities, and new technologies in infection diagnostics.
