Book excerpt: "This publication is a survey of three decades of work by contemporary Native American artist Gerald Clarke (Cahuilla). Utilising wit and humour to expose historical and present-day injustice, Clarke brings a decolonial perspective to urgent cultural and political issues facing our world. Gerald Clarke is an artist, university professor, cowboy and Cahuilla tribal leader. Combining various media in his sculptures, paintings, works on paper, videos, performances and installations, Clarke derives artistic inspiration from his cultural heritage, expressing traditional ideas in contemporary forms that are both poetic and politically urgent. Clarke's artistic output resonates with histories of assemblage, pop and conceptual art produced by both Native and non-Native artists. This amply illustrated catalogue introduces Clarke's work at a moment when it is profoundly necessary"--Palm Springs Art Museum Shop description

Book excerpt: published by Palm Springs Art Museum on the occasion of the museum?s 75th anniversary year October 2013 ? October 2014. Foundation and Historical progression of the Palm Springs Desert Museum into the Palm Springs Art Museum: This book commemorates the 75th anniversary of the Palm Springs Art Museum and honors the many individuals who have worked to make it an outstanding institution. Two earlier books on the museum’s history remain valuable resources today: Desert Dream Fulfilled: The History of the Palm Springs Desert Museum (1983) and Palm Springs Desert Museum: 50 (1988), marking the museum’s 50th anniversary. The years since then have borne witness to significant developments, including the switch to a single focus on art and the name change to Palm Springs Art Museum in 2005. In order to tell the whole story in a fresh and informative way, we have designed this publication to incorporate personal observations and comments from individuals who have witnessed large parts of that history, focusing primarily on the last twenty-five years. The museum’s past remains an ingrained component of its present. The origins of the institution date to the late 1930s, when a dedicated group of individuals transformed their love of nature into the Palm Springs Desert Museum. The museum first opened its doors in January 1938 in La Plaza downtown, and was officially incorporated in October of the same year. More than most art museums, our history is deeply rooted in our geography and environmental surroundings. Natural history remained a core component of the museum’s mission into the twenty-first century, completely dominating its programs at first and then sharing center stage with art programs from the 1960s until 2004, when this focus was eliminated. Out of this regional dedication developed the museum’s collection of Native American artworks, to which desert painting and photography were eventually added. Even our current building on Museum Drive, which opened in 1976, conveys a strong sense of place through angled forms in stone and cast concrete that seem to project from their mountain backdrop.

Book excerpt: Agnes Pelton became famous for her distinctive metaphysical landscape paintings rooted in the imagery of the American Southwest and California. Drawing chiefly on her own inspirations, superstitions, and beliefs, Pelton manifested emotional states in the form of ethereal veils of light, jagged rock forms, shimmering stars, and exaggerated horizons. Through these imaginary tableaus, she constructed a fantastic world that allowed her to make sense of that which is uncontrollable, establishing for herself a new universal order rooted in the natural world. Agnes Pelton: Desert Transcendentalist is the first survey of this understudied painter in more than twenty-two years. Examining the artist's work in relation to the movements of abstraction, surrealism, and art of the occult, this vibrant book sheds light on Pelton's remarkable influence on American spiritual modernism. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This classic volume, now available at a lower price, showcases jet-set homes designed by the likes of Neutra, Frey, Lautner, and others. Palm Springs is famous as a mecca for the international jet set. But the city has also attracted its share of eccentrics and mavericks who have left an architectural legacy that remains unsurpassed for its originality and international influence. This book examines the impact that architects and designers have had on the desert oasis, primarily from the 1940s to the 1960s. Palm Springs Modern features examples of midcentury modernism at its most glamorous, some of them the residences of prominent figures who commissioned weekend getaways in the desert, including Frank Sinatra, Walter Annenberg, and Raymond Loewy. Adéle Cygelman’s insightful text, a foreword by architectural historian Joseph Rosa, contemporary color photography by David Glomb, and the celebrated archival black-and-white work of Julius Shulman all capture the distinctly modern allure of America’s famed desert playground.

Wexler's practice began with the design of prefabricated houses and portable classrooms constructed of light gauge steel. The extremes of the desert forced Wexler to create a specific type of sustainable architecture, which he applied to projects commissioned by people like Dinah Shore, Frank Sinatra, the Alexander Construction Company and Walt Disney World Resort. Book excerpt: This book examines pioneering Latin American kinetic artists who helped develop kinetic art into an international movement. Kinesthesia: Latin American Kinetic Art, 1954-1969 examines the influential and visually stunning work of South American kinetic artists. While Southern California was becoming the North American epicenter for Light and Space art in the 1960s, separate yet closely related technical experiments had been unfolding in a handful of major cities of South America, as well as in Paris, the European center for kinetic art. Kinesthesia highlights the broad differences that emerged among the two principal South American centers of activity: Argentina, where kinetic art grew out of local debates about painting; and Venezuela, where pioneering notions of modern architecture stimulated a synthesis of art and design. Featured in this volume are kinetic sculptures and installations by Jesús Rafael Soto, Julio Le Parc, Carlos Cruz-Diez, Martha Boto, and others, as well as essays that explore the history of this movement, examine the artists' reception by European and American audiences in the context of the Cold War, and link their achievements to 21st-century artists and their work.
