Book Continental Rifts Evolution Structure Tectonics

Download or read book Continental Rifts Evolution Structure Tectonics written by K.H. Olsen and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 1995-11-24 with total page 511 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This multi-author book has been prepared by an international group of geoscientists that have been active in rift research since the late 1960s. In 1984, an informal, grass-roots study group was initiated to compare individual research results and to explore in greater depth the apparent differences and similarities in the interpretations from various rift systems. The group became known as the CREST working group, an acronym of Continental Rifts: Evolution, Structure and Tectonics, which not surprisingly became the title of this book.Continental Rifts: Evolution, Structure, Tectonics presents an overview of the present state of understanding and knowledge of the processes of continental rifting from a multidisciplinary, lithospheric scale perspective. The chapters have been structured on each rift system in approximately the same synoptic sequence, so as to facilitate comparisons of rifts by the reader. The book complements its predecessors by presenting a more unified picture. It succeeds in presenting the status of a representative majority of the continental rift systems that have been at the forefront of recent research. For students and experienced researchers alike, this book will be of significant value in assessing the current state of knowledge and in serving as a framework for future research.

Book Stratigraphic Evolution of Foreland Basins

Download or read book Stratigraphic Evolution of Foreland Basins written by Steven L. Dorobek and published by . This book was released on 1995 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A strong case can be made that foreland basins are where the casual links between sedimentation and tectonic events were first recognized, as evidenced by the interpretations of geologists working in classic foreland areas. This Special Publication was derived from a Research Symposium entitled "Stratigraphic Sequences in Foreland Basins" held at the AAPG-SEPM joint annual meeting on June, 1992, in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. This volume provides a well-balanced perspective of current research on foreland basin stratigraphy and also serves as another element in the evolving framework that comprises our understanding of foreland basins. Given that so many of earth's resources are found in foreland basins and that foreland basin strata often provide the only preserved record of the tectonic events that led to basin development, the impetus for continued studies of foreland basin strata should remain for many generations of geologists to come.

Book Complete Bouguer and Isostatic Residual Gravity Maps of the Anadarko Basin Wichita Mountains and Surrounding Areas Oklahoma Kansas Texas and Colorado

Download or read book Complete Bouguer and Isostatic Residual Gravity Maps of the Anadarko Basin Wichita Mountains and Surrounding Areas Oklahoma Kansas Texas and Colorado written by Stephen Leroy Robbins and published by . This book was released on 1992 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Complete Bouguer and isostatic residual gravity maps of the Anadarko basin, Wichita Mountains, and surrounding areas in parts of Oklahoma, Kansas, Texas, and Colorado were compiled using gravity data from 11,023 stations. The most prominent features on these maps are gravity highs over the Amarillo-Wichita and Arbuckle uplifts and the Muenster arch. These highs are assumed to be caused by Late Proterozoic-Cambrian high-density gabbroic and volcanic rocks that are believed to be part of an aulacogen. Other features on the maps include (1) a north-northeast-trending high that may be associated with a southern extension of the Midcontinent gravity high, about one degree of longitude west of the Nemaha uplift, (2) an arcuate gravity high in the southeastern corner of the study area that probably represents the southern margin of the North American continent during the Late Proterozoic, (3) a very large gravity low associated with the Arkoma basin and Ouachita Mountains thrust belt, (4) gravity lows associated with most of the Paleozoic basins in the region, (5) no apparent gravity expression of the Nemaha ridge, and (6) broad gravity highs that are probably caused by dense mafic igneous rocks in the basement. These broad gravity highs and the fact that the gravity low over the Anadarko basin is higher over the deepest part of the basin than in other parts of the basin indicate that many, if not most, of the anomalies are caused by differences in basement rock types and densities.

Book Regional Stratigraphy of North America

Download or read book Regional Stratigraphy of North America written by W.J. Frazier and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-11 with total page 735 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An early reviewer of this book stated that he had difficulty assessing its marketability because it "falls between the cracks" of geological literature. We have designed this book to meet a need of modem geology: namely, a single source providing both detailed and synoptic stratigraphy of the various regions of North America, through geological time. Shortly after beginning work on such a book, we realized why it had not yet been written: it required six years of effort, assimilation of an incredible amount of information, and two years' additional work to cut the volume down to publishable size. Further, by the time the final chapter was written, the fIrst few were already out of date. Nevertheless, the book lies in front of you. It is intended to serve several purposes. As a textbook, it will serve the following courses: • Regional stratigraphy • Sedimentary tectonics • Regional tectonics • Advanced historical geology • Survey-level paleontology Obviously, not all portions of the book are relevant to all of the above courses. We assume the reader will retain this book after the particular course is done, and will use it as a reference book. Hopefully, others will obtain the book solely for reference purposes. We believe it will be especially useful for the working geologist or academic geologist seeking generalized and some moderately detailed information about a region or geological time interval which is unfamiliar.
