Book excerpt: Does democracy have a chance in Pakistan? In the sixty years of its existence, Pakistan has experienced four military coups and has been ruled by the military for more than half the period. Even during the interludes of democracy, Pakistan's military exercised considerable power and influence. It also supported various militant groups in their causes, thus abetting terrorism. Ill-conceived policies of the military dictatorship in the country and failed intermittent civilian governments fuelled internal turmoil and branded Pakistan as a refuge for Islamic terrorists and a haven for the Taliban. Pakistan: The Struggle Within documents and analyses, among other things, the geopolitical scenario, the ethnic conflicts and civil-military relations in Pakistan, and explores its immediate future, all of which have a great and immediate relevance-not only to India but also to the international community. This book is a collection of essays written by some of the world's best-known scholars and analysts on Pakistan. It highlights how Pakistan continues to battle multiple challenges to its sovereignty, identity and survival as a nation-state.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent years Pakistan has emerged as a strategic player on the world stage—both as a potential rogue state armed with nuclear weapons and as an American ally in the war against terrorism. But our understanding of this country is superficial. To probe beyond the headlines, Stephen Cohen, author of the prize-winning India: Emerging Power, offers a panoramic portrait of this complex country—from its origins as a homeland for Indian Muslims to a militarydominated state that has experienced uneven economic growth, political chaos, sectarian violence, and several nuclear crises with its much larger neighbor, India. Pakistan's future is uncertain. Can it fulfill its promise of joining the community of nations as a moderate Islamic state, at peace with its neighbors, or could it dissolve completely into a failed state, spewing out terrorists and nuclear weapons in several directions? The Idea of Pakistan will be an essential tool for understanding this critically important country.

Book Non Muslims in Muslim Majority Societies With Focus on the Middle East and Pakistan

Download or read book Non Muslims in Muslim Majority Societies With Focus on the Middle East and Pakistan written by Kajsa Ahlstrand and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2009-04-01 with total page 110 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a world where almost all societies are multi-religious and multi-ethnic, we need to study how social cohesion can be achieved in different contexts. In some geographical areas, as in the Middle East and the Indian subcontinent, people of different religious belonging have, through the ages, lived side by side, sometimes in harmony and sometimes in dissonance. In other geographical regions, as in Scandinavia, societies have been quite religiously homogeneous but only recently challenged by immigration. The implication in both locations is that the relation between religious minority and majority is on the agenda. In order to discuss the situation for Non-Muslims in Muslim majority societies, a consultation was convened with both Muslim and Christian participants from Pakistan, Palestine, Lebanon, and Sweden. Some of the participants work in academic settings, others in faith based organizations, some in jurisprudence and others with theological issues. This book is the result of that consultation; the articles are "works in progress," and they remain tentative. The intention with this anthology is to trigger reflection and further thinking. It presents articles that discuss issues such as freedom of religion, minority rights, secular and religious legislation, and inter-religious dialogue in Muslim majority societies. Contributors: Kajsa Ahlstrand, Goran Gunner, Mustafa Abu Sway, Johan Garde, Yasmin Haider, Jan Hjarpe, M. Aslam Khaki, Bernard Sabella, Mehboob Sada, Guirguis Ibrahim Saleh, and Ahmad Salim This book is the second volume in Church of Sweden Research Series.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A comprehensive study of the history, politics, religion, economy, and culture of Pakistan—how it came to be, where it is, and where it is going. Pakistan occupies a position of geopolitical and strategic importance for the United States. This book explains why, and reveals the reality of this little-studied country. Although Pakistan became a country only in 1947, its people and culture have a rich history. It is a Muslim state, a nuclear power, and a politically troubled land. Pakistan stretches from the heights of the Hindu Kush to the lowlands of the Indus delta. Its people and culture are as varied as its landscape. This scholarly yet accessible work treats the full range of modern Pakistan. Its thorough examination of the country's problems—along with its strengths—makes this an ideal resource for high school or college course work, and an indispensable addition to library collections.

Book Social Security for the Elderly

Download or read book Social Security for the Elderly written by S. Irudaya Rajan and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-07-16 with total page 412 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book overviews the issue of population ageing in five countries in South Asia and projects the emerging scenarios. With a new field survey, it also documents existing policies and programs on pensions and social security, and examines their fiscal implications for the economy and society. Ageing of population is an inevitable consequence of the process of demographic transition. Being ahead, the developed regions of the world have long experienced its consequences; but the developing world is only now facing the travails of population ageing. Though the population under the age of 15 years in 2000 was estimated to be 3.3 times the size of the population of 60 years and above, the elderly are expected to surpass the number of children under 15 years by the year 2050. Among the elderly, it is the oldest old—those aged 80 years or more, whose numbers would increase most rapidly. Much of this growth would take place in the poor countries of the world. Five South Asian countries (India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and Nepal) account for 100 million elderly persons in the beginning of 21st century and it is expected to reach 400 million in 2050. What are the fiscal implications of this tremendous growth for sustaining pensions and social security schemes in South Asia? Are these countries in need of pension reforms? Would these countries be able to provide good health care for the growing population of elderly persons afflicted by multiple diseases and disability? Experts from leading economic research institutions address the issue with a new survey conducted in each country. The book, in effect: Assesses the ageing scenario in five countries in South Asia: past, present, and future; Reviews existing policies and programs on pensions and social security for the elderly; Reports the findings of a sample survey in each of these countries conducted for this work in order to assess the nature, magnitude, and adequacy of various forms of pensions and social assistance; Suggests broad-based comprehensive pension and social security policies in South Asia. .
