Book excerpt: This book presents the first systematic analysis of artistic techniques and terminology related to the rendering of light and shade in Dutch and Flemish art from the early-seventeenth to the mid-eighteenth century. It traces a shift in aesthetic perception, which is visible in the handling of chiaroscuro in Dutch and Flemish art in the course of 150 years, and challenges the view, widespread since Julius von Schlosser's influential survey of European art and literarure, that Netherlandish art was mainly uninventive. In their discussions Netherlandish writers of art theory drew on a) earlier and foreign art literature, b) their insights, mainly as painters, into workshop practice, c) observation of nature (including natural sciences) and d) aesthetic judgement. This volume investigates the different extents to which Netherlandisch writers on art depended on these four aspects as they devised their concepts of chiaroscuro and how this relates to contemporary pictorial practice. Statements on chiaroscuro in the writings of Karel van Mander, Philips Angel, Willem Goeree, Samuel van Hoogstraten, Gerard de Lairesse, Arnold Houbraken and Jacob Campo Weyerman have been compared with paintings of the period to test the writers' statements against the artists'methods. The comparison shows that writers of art theory described partly the same or similar methods to achieve effects of chiaroscuro that artists used in their works, which is understandable, given that most of them were active as artists themselves. Yet there are also divergences, especially when it comes to the question whether artists should value rendering natural effects over pictorial coherence. Dutch writers of art regarded natural impression as a crucial aim of art, but they often struggled with reconciling nature and aesthetic requirements in their arguments. In the art of the Netherlands, however, we can observe frequently that aesthetic and pictorial composition came before nature.

In particular Goedde links the meaning of Dutch tempest paintings with a rhetorical tradition in Dutch literature. Through his analysis he is able to offer fresh insights not only into these seascapes but into the interpretation of all pre-Romantic landscapes as well. This book is addressed at once to specialists in Dutch art and to a broad group of art historians and scholars concerned with cultural history and the relation of literature to art. It offers a survey of the tempest in art and literature from antiquity to the modern era in order to define the conventional elements of Dutch painting and writing on this theme. An exceptional feature of this study is the author's analysis of the ways conventions encode meaning in both literary and pictorial representations. Explicating these conventional structures and themes in terms of the cosmology of correspondences and of elemental love and strife, Goedde's discussion both encourages and controls metaphorical interpretation of stormscapes. That it contains, in permanent form, thirty wood-engravings by Timothy Cole, after the masterpieces of Dutch and Flemish art, is, in itself, sufficient reason for the book's existence. These engravings have been produced in the same manner, and with the same skill and care, that characterized Mr. Cole's earlier engravings after the old Italian masters. Indeed, it was the success of the Italian work that led to his undertaking the present series. Directly after completing his work in Italy, Mr. Cole was asked by the managers of The Century to go to Holland and undertake the translation of the great Dutchmen. In 1892 he removed from Italy to Amsterdam, where he remained for a year, engraving the pictures chosen for reproduction from the Holland galleries. He then went back to Paris, where he has remained up to the present time, working from the Dutch and Flemish pictures in the Louvre and elsewhere. In every instance Mr. Cole has produced his engraving with the original picture before him, the photograph being thrown upon the block and its insufficiencies or inequalities being corrected by consulting the original. In this way absolute fidelity to the original has been obtained, not only in line and in modeling, but in giving the exact values of colors under light and under shadow. In determining the truth of a form, a light, or a tone, Mr. Cole's long experience has made him an expert, and though passing from Italy to Holland, - a change from line to color, - he has easily adapted himself to the new point of view, and has interpreted the new methods with the same artistic sympathy that marked his former work.
