Book The Berlin Masterpieces in America

Download or read book The Berlin Masterpieces in America written by Peter J. Bell and published by Giles. This book was released on 2020-07-21 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This new volume tells the story of some of the paintings rescued by the the Monuments, Fine Arts and Archives (MFAA) organization, the so-called "Monuments Men." In December 1945, 202 paintings, found in German salt mines 2,100 feet underground, where they had been hidden to escape the allied bombing of Berlin, were brought to the United States "for safe keeping" by the Department of the Army. They were exhibited in 1948 at the National Gallery of Art, Washington DC, before some of them were sent on a whistle-stop tour of 13 US cities, despite furious opposition from museum directors, Gallery staff, the public, government officials, and a resolution from 98 leading art authorities demanding the immediate return of the works to Germany. All the paintings, examples of Flemish, Dutch, German, French, English, and Italian Schools, were from museums in Berlin, and had been found in April 1945, along with 100 tons of Reichsbank gold, by the special team of art historians and experts, seconded in the US army, and charged with locating and restituting works of art looted by the Nazis. This book is the first to consider the paintings themselves; it features 22 artworks that were in the original NGA exhibition, including four paintings on loan from Berlin, augmented by others from Cincinnati Art Museum, National Gallery of Art, Washington, The Getty Museum, Miami University (Oxford, OH), and the Taft Museum.

Book excerpt: "The royal art collection in Berlin had its beginnings in the seventeenth century under the Great Elector, Frederick William I of Brandenburg. From that time on, it grew steadily until, together with the works exhibited publicly from 1830 in the museum at the Lustgarten, and from 1904 at the Kaiser Friedrich Museum, it achieved a place among the foremost collections in the world. ... The cream of the collection (which since the Second World War has been divided between East and West Berlin) is now displayed in the museum in the western suburb of Dahlem. Rüdige Klessmann, who was assistant and Curator of Paintings at the Dahlem Museum from 1957 to 1970, provides in this book a complete account of the Gallery's history and development. A representation selection of ninety outstanding works is illustrated in color, and each is accompanied by detailed notes. These, together with well over a hundred black-and-white illustrations, give a vivid impression of the full extent and quality of the five hundred paintings that hang today in the West Berlin's Dahlem Museum." - back cover.

Book Manichaean Art in Berlin Collections

Download or read book Manichaean Art in Berlin Collections written by Zsuzsanna Gulácsi and published by Brepols Publishers. This book was released on 2001 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The world's richest source of Manichaean texts and works of art is the Turfan region in East Central Asia, and the largest collection of such artifacts is found in Berlin. The Berlin Turfan collections resulted from four German expeditions that took place between 1902 and 1914. The commencement of the philological study of the thousands of manuscript fragments from Turfan led to the recognition of the first known, original Manichaean writings. Among these primary sources, Manichaean works of art were found as well. A sample of them, the best preserved items, appeared in two studies by Albert von Le Coq and a few pieces are frequently exhibited internationally and appear in catalogues published by the Berlin Museum of Indian Art. Besides these efforts, Turfan Manichaean art has enjoyed little art historical attention. A Manichaean artistic corpus has never been systematically identified among the Turfan remains. Artifacts belonging to this corpus have not been catalogued or examined by art historians as a whole. This book is a comprehensive, descriptive catalogue of positively identified Manichaean artifacts housed in Berlin. The majority of them belong to the State Museums of the Prussian Cultural Heritage Foundation, housed in the Museum for Indian Art, Berlin. In addition numerous illuminated book fragments are found within a manuscript collection belonging to the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences and is deposited in the Berlin State Library of the Prussian Cultural Heritage Foundation. From the two Turfan collections, 93 item-groups have been selected according to a specific set of criteria. The main entries of this catalogue are organized according to media and are presented as illuminated book fragments, remnants of leather book covers, painted and embroidered textiles and fragments of wall paintings. The largest group, paper fragments, includes 68 pieces and is sub-divided by book-format - codex, scroll and pustake (palm leaf format).

Book Looking at Monet

Download or read book Looking at Monet written by Agnes Husslein-Arco and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Viennese art scene of the late-nineteenth and early twentieth century counted French impressionism among its chief influences. Widely regarded as the movement's formative figure, Monet's works appeared in all the major galleries of the day, including the K nstlerhaus Wien, the Secession Building, and the legendary Galerie Miethke, earning him distinction as the most influential of the French impressionists, along with douard Manet. For Looking at Monet, Agnes Husslein-Arco and Stephan Koja of the Belvedere Gallery in Vienna have assembled works by Monet, presenting them alongside selected paintings and photographs by Austrian artists active throughout the same period who would have been familiar with Monet's work. Among the artists whose work is included are Gustav Klimt, Emil Jakob Schindler, Oskar Kokoschka, Olga Wisinger-Florian, Heinrich K hn, and Ludwig Heinrich Jungnickel. Brilliantly colorful and filled with light, Monet's paintings captivate modern audiences. Looking at Monet shows they were equally beloved by the artist's contemporaries--many of whom were great masters in their own right.
