Quincy The path that leads one over hills bathed in sunshine will also descend, occasionally, into shaded dales: one will observe in an old garden briars intermingled with the flowers, but - like the sundial set in their midst - this correspondence shall be a record Of events, marking, only in sunlit degrees, the Dial Of Time! Book Glory Azure and Gold

Download or read book Glory Azure and Gold written by Antonia Johnson and published by Lund Humphries Publishers Limited. This book was released on 2017-01-06 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first book to be published on the stained-glass art of Thomas Denny. While his name is known mainly within ecclesiastical and glass-making circles, it is likely that Denny's art is instantly recognisable to a great many more. His radiant windows in Gloucester, Durham and Hereford Cathedrals and in many churches and chapels around the UK are arguably some of the art world's best-kept secrets. Denny (b.1956) originally studied painting at Edinburgh College of Art and has translated this painterly experience into a uniquely expressive style of stained glass. His works combine the aesthetic invention of modern British forbears such as John Piper with subtle reference to the medieval and ancient past. Including eleven heartfelt essays as well as poetry and the artist's own testimony, which explore and explain the subject matter, techniques and dazzling effect of Denny's craft, this book will be of interest to members of the thriving community of contemporary glass-makers as well as anyone who has seen and been moved by his work.

Book excerpt: New translations of poems by prominent Peruvian poet Carlos Germ n Belli. This selection of poems by internationally renowned Peruvian poet Carlos Germ n Belli tempers a dark, ironic vision of worldly injustice with the "red midnight sun" of hope. Belli's contemplative verses express faith in language, in bodily joy, and in artistic form. These thirty-five poems explore public and domestic spaces of confinement and freedom, from paralysis to the ease of a bird in its "azure cloister." Translations by Karl Maurer retain Belli's original meter, follow his complex syntax, and meet the challenges of his poetic language, which ranges from colloquial Peruvian slang to the ironic use of seventeenth-century Spanish. This volume also includes notes and reflections on Belli and on the art of translation. Beyond introducing American readers to a major presence in world poetry, The Azure Cloister offers a fresh approach to the translation of contemporary verse in Spanish in this bilingual edition.
