Book Literatura Hispanoamericana

Download or read book Literatura Hispanoamericana written by David W. Foster and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-05-22 with total page 1216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Spanish-language anthology contains selections by 45 Latin-American authors. It is intended as a text for upper division Latin American literature survey courses. The anthology presumes a high level of linguistic command of Spanish, and it contains footnotes to allusions and cultural references, as well as words and phrases not found in standard bilingual dictionaries used in the US. Emphasis is on major 20th-century writers, while important works from colonial and 19th-century literature as also included. The diverse selections of Literature Hispanoamericana will enable students to have a more sustained exposure to major voices of Latin American literature than possible in anthologies built around fragments. By focusing on fewer authors but more significant selections from their writings, students will have a greater grasp of major canonical figures as well as emergent voices.

Book The Encyclopedia of Nineteenth century Land Warfare

Download or read book The Encyclopedia of Nineteenth century Land Warfare written by Byron Farwell and published by W. W. Norton & Company. This book was released on 2001 with total page 936 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The late Byron Farwell served as an engineer in the British forces of World War II and was an author of at least seven books on various aspects of military history. In this encyclopedia, a labor of love intended for both scholars and general readers, entries include information on wars, revolutions, battles, sieges, spies, soldiers, technical military terms, weapons, and other aspects of 19th-centruy wars and military life. The length of an entry does not necessarily correspond to its importance. Some lesser conflicts and minor personalities are given more space, because information is not readily available elsewhere; and conversely, if information on a topic is widely available, the entry is short. Small bandw images enhance the text. A selected bibliography is included at the end of the volume. Indexing, at least by country or general topic would have improved this otherwise carefully prepared reference. Annotation copyrighted by Book News Inc., Portland, OR

  • Author : Idurre Alonso
  • Publisher : Getty Publications

Download or read book Alfredo Boulton written by Idurre Alonso and published by Getty Publications. This book was released on 2023-07-18 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This lavishly illustrated volume examines the work of the Venezuelan photographer and art historian Alfredo Boulton, one of the main intellectuals of Latin American modernity. Alfredo Boulton (1908–1995) is considered one of the most important champions of modern art in Venezuela and a key intellectual of twentieth-century modernism. He was a pioneer of modern photography, an art critic, a researcher and historian of Venezuelan art, a friend to many of the great artists and architects of the twentieth century, and an expert on the imagery of the heroes of his country’s independence. Yet, Boulton is shockingly underrecognized outside of his native land. The few exhibitions related to his work have focused exclusively on his photographic production; never has there been a project that looks at the full range of Boulton’s efforts, foregrounding his influence on the shaping of Venezuelan art. This volume addresses these lacunae by analyzing Boulton’s groundbreaking photographic practice, his central role in the construction of a modern national artistic canon, and his influence in formalizing and developing art history and criticism in Venezuela. Based on the extensive materials held in Boulton’s archive at the Getty Research Institute, Alfredo Boulton brings together essays by leading scholars in the field to offer a commanding, original perspective on his contributions to the formation of a distinctive modernity at home and beyond. This volume is published to accompany an exhibition on view at the Getty Research Institute at the Getty Center from August 29, 2023, to January 21, 2024.

Book Latin America since 1780

Download or read book Latin America since 1780 written by Will Fowler and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-03-07 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although largely sharing a common past and language, the countries in Latin America remain distinct entities with their own identities. Latin America since 1780 provides a continental-based historical narrative which stresses the common themes between countries like Mexico in North America to Argentina in the Southern Cone, while at the same time highlighting their specific national contexts. This book focuses on key events such as the Mexican-American War, the Cuban Revolution, and the overthrow of Salvador Allende's government, as well as providing short inserts on the main political protagonists such as Simon Bolívar, Getulio Vargas and the Subcomandante Marcos. This new edition has been fully updated to include recent events and trends including Hugo Chávez's 'Bolivarian Revolution' in Venezuela, Evo Morales' electoral victory in Bolivia, and the so-called Pink Tide that has resulted in the emergence of a variety of socialist-leaning governments in the region. At the same time, the book discusses Latin America's cultural diversity, paying particular attention to the response of writers and film makers to the historical contexts covered in the book. A range of pedagogical devices and a lively prose style makes this book the ideal introduction to Latin American history. Written in an accessible style and assuming no prior knowledge, the books in this series address the specific needs of students on language courses, as well as anyone with an interest in modern history. Approaching the study of history via contemporary politics and society, each book offers a clear historical narrative and sets the country or region concerned in the context of the wider world.

Book The Wars of Spanish American Independence 1809 29

Download or read book The Wars of Spanish American Independence 1809 29 written by John Fletcher and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2014-06-06 with total page 126 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1808, Napoleon Bonaparte treacherously outmaneuvered the corrupt Spanish Bourbons and installed his brother Joseph as King of Spain, igniting the flames of war across the Iberian Peninsula. Far across the Atlantic, this event lit the fuse for a war that raged for the better part of two decades as Spain's colonies grasped the opportunity to seize their own independence. The Wars of South American Independence began with confused, scattered uprisings in 1809 and ended with a half-hearted expedition against Mexico in 1829. The South American revolutions heralded Spain's downfall as a world power and marked the first expression of an expansionist foreign policy by the United States of America. Featuring specially commissioned full-color maps and drawing upon the latest research, this volume traces the military events of the Independence period and sheds new light on the leaders, men, and battles that reshaped the hemisphere. The myriad campaigns, often uncoordinated and occurring thousands of miles apart, are brought together and related to the wider context, in this engaging introduction to a crucial period in the history of the Americas.
