Download or read book The Orthodox Church in the Byzantine Empire written by J. M. Hussey and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2010-03-25 with total page 456 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book describes the role of the medieval Orthodox Church in the Byzantine Empire (c.600-c.1453). As an integral part of its policy it was (as in western Christianity) closely linked with many aspects of everyday life both official and otherwise. It was a formative period for Orthodoxy. It had to face doctrinal problems and heresies; at the same time it experienced the continuity and deepening of its liturgical life. While holding fast to the traditions of the fathers and the councils, it saw certain developments in doctrine and liturgy as also in administration. Part I discusses the landmarks in ecclesiastical affairs within the Empire as well as the creative influence exercised on the Slavs and the increasing contacts with westerners particularly after 1204. Part II gives a brief account of the structure of the medieval Orthodox Church, its officials and organization, and the spirituality of laity, monks, and clergy.

Download or read book The Library of the Villa Dei Papiri at Herculaneum written by David Sider and published by Getty Publications. This book was released on 2005 with total page 136 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The recovery in the 1750s of more than a thousand scorched papyrus rolls from the Villa dei Papiri in ancient Herculaneum caused great excitement among contemporaries. The find held the tantalizing possibility of the rediscovery of lost masterpieces by classical writers. Although the papyrus rolls were charred, some quite severely, much of their contents could be read." "David Sider describes the long and difficult history of attempts to unwind the damaged rolls, a task made more frustrating because the hoped-for lost masterpieces have yet to emerge. He discusses the fragmentary Greek and Latin texts in those papyri that have been opened and deciphered, putting them in the context of writing and literacy in antiquity. Sider also describes the form of ancient Greek books and of the papyrus sheets on which they were written. He provides an account of attitudes toward books in Greece and Rome and surveys other libraries in the ancient world, both private and civic." "Written for the general reader, the book provides an overview of the only library to have come down to us from antiquity."--BOOK JACKET.

Download or read book Commerce and Social Standing in Ancient Rome written by John H. D'Arms and published by . This book was released on 1981 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: John D'Arms explores here a question of central importance for the social economic history of the Roman world: which sectors of society were actively engaged in trade? In the late Roman Republic and early Empire senators were prohibited by law from direct participation in seaborne commerce; trade was not considered a respectable pursuit. Yet large fortunes were amassed by men of rank through a variety of lucrative enterprises. Exploiting the evidence of literature, archaeology, and inscription, D'Arms constructs case histories which reveal how senators realized commercial profits by indirect involvement: freedmen, municipal notables, and "friends" often served as the equivalent of partners or agents of aristocrats with large holdings in land. In demonstrating a flexibility in upper-class attitudes toward commercial activity, he offers a study in the adaptation of a social system to economic realities.
Download or read book Europe in the Sixteenth Century written by H.G. Koenigsberger and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-06-06 with total page 558 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This bestselling, seminal book - a general survey of Europe in the era of `Rennaisance and Reformation' - was originally published in Denys Hay's famous Series, `A General History of Europe'. It looks at sixteenth-century Europe as a complex but interconnected whole, rather than as a mosaic of separate states. The authors explore its different aspects through the various political structures of the age - empires, monarchies, city-republics - and how they functioned and related to one another. A strength of the book remains the space it devotes to the growing importance of town-life in the sixteenth century, and to the economic background of political change.
