Book Padres in No Man s Land Second Edition

Download or read book Padres in No Man s Land Second Edition written by Duff Crerar and published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP. This book was released on 2014-08-01 with total page 447 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Padres in No Man's Land is the compelling story of brave and deeply committed army chaplains who brought faith and courage to Canada's troops during one of history's most devastating wars. Tracing the growth of the Canadian Chaplain Service from its chaotic and controversy-ridden early days to its maturation as an efficient field force, Duff Crerar highlights both the role of the Service on the battlefield and the personal experiences of the chaplains. Refuting the widely held view that chaplains serving overseas were cloistered from front-line realities, Crerar describes the padres' experiences in camps, hospitals, and on the battlefield. He examines how they maintained their faith in the face of death and destruction, and explores the bonds forged between chaplains and troops. Padres in No Man's Land concludes in the postwar era with the decline of the chaplains' hopes for spiritual renewal upon their return to Canada - their dreams dashed not by the war, but by the subsequent peace.

Ford's writing style is characterized by its intricate prose, psychological depth, and innovative narrative techniques, such as fragmented chronology and shifting perspectives, a reflection of the modernist movement of the time. Set against the backdrop of the war-torn Europe, the Tetralogy delves into the complex inner lives of its characters, grappling with themes of loyalty, morality, and the impact of historical events on personal relationships. The work stands as a significant contribution to English literature, showcasing Ford's masterful storytelling and keen insight into human nature. Ford Madox Ford's own experiences as a soldier during WWI and his disillusionment with the war likely inspired the creation of this epic literary work. The Parade's End Tetralogy is a must-read for anyone interested in intricate character studies, historical fiction, and the lasting effects of war on individuals and society.

Book The Charismatic Gymnasium

Download or read book The Charismatic Gymnasium written by Maria José de Abreu and published by Duke University Press. This book was released on 2021-01-15 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In The Charismatic Gymnasium Maria José de Abreu examines how Charismatic Catholicism in contemporary Brazil produces a new form of total power through a concatenation of the breathing body, theology, and electronic mass media. De Abreu documents a vast religious respiratory program of revival popularly branded as “the aerobics of Jesus.” Pneuma—the Greek term for air, breath, and spirit—is central to this aerobic program, whose goal is to labor on the athletic elasticity of spirit. Tracing the rhetoric, gestures, and spaces that together constitute this new theological community, de Abreu exposes the articulating forces among evangelical Christianity, neoliberal logics, and the rise of right-wing politics. By calling attention to how an ethics of pauperism vitally intersects with the neoliberal ethos of flexibility, de Abreu shows how paradoxes do not hinder but expand the Charismatic gymnasium. The result, de Abreu demonstrates, is the production of a fluid form of totalitarianism and Christianity in Brazil and beyond.

Download or read book Ford Madox Ford s Parade s End written by Ashley Chantler and published by Rodopi. This book was released on 2014-07-10 with total page 217 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The controversial British writer Ford Madox Ford (1873–1939) is increasingly recognized as a major presence in early twentieth-century literature. This series of International Ford Madox Ford Studies was founded to reflect the recent resurgence of interest in him. Each volume is based upon a particular theme, issue, or work; and relates aspects of Ford’s writing, life, and contacts, to broader concerns of his time. Ford is best-known for his fiction, especially The Good Soldier, long considered a modernist masterpiece; and Parade’s End, which Anthony Burgess described as ‘the finest novel about the First World War’, Samuel Hynes has called ‘the greatest war novel ever written by an Englishman’, and which was adapted by Tom Stoppard for the acclaimed 2012 BBC/HBO television series, starring Benedict Cumberbatch and Rebecca Hall. Parade’s End is the subject of the fifteen essays here, by both established experts and new scholars. The volume includes groundbreaking work on the psycho-geography of the war in Ford’s novels; on how the war intensifies self-consciousness about performance and sensation; and on the other writers and artists Ford drew upon, and argued with, in producing his post-war masterpiece.

Book The Pilot and the Commando

Download or read book The Pilot and the Commando written by Anthony Meredith and published by Author House. This book was released on 2011-12-21 with total page 221 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Pilot And The Commando tells the stories of David Carter MBE (a Fleet Air Arm pilot) and his close friend Jos Nicholl MC (an Army commando), giving fresh and vivid insights into what it meant to be a young man on active service in the Second World War, fighting in places as remote as Ceylon, Africa, Madagascar, Yugoslavia and Albania. Major events in which they participated also included the sinking of the Ark Royal off Gibraltar, the Allied landings at Salerno and the liberation of Sicily and Italy. A final chapter puts their wartime service into the context of their later lives. The Pilot And The Commando is much more, however, than just a stirring commemoration of bravery in action. Both David and Jos were committed Christians, and the book (much helped by the use of diaries and letters) has as its central theme the testing and strengthening of their faith through times of deep adversity. Writing of his experiences soon after the war, Jos Nicholl concluded: I have found that Jesus Christ provides the inspiration for every possible occasion or need. He can act as guide and helper and comforter, but primarily He can be the driving force in a life that is devoted to Him, and with this compelling power behind them it becomes true in practice that the people that do know their God shall be strong and do exploits These words find complete exemplification in The Pilot And The Commando. David and Joss story is both uplifting and challenging.
