This book was released on 2005-09-30 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The fall of Singapore and the brilliant victories achieved since the start of the war mean we are protected, but I don’t know just how grateful I should be. —Takahashi Aiko, housewife, February 1942 This is my final departure from the home islands. I have paid my respects to those who have helped me. I have no regrets. —Itabashi Yasuo, navy kamikaze pilot, February 1944 We had rice gruel for lunch again. There was no tofu in it, but there were potatoes.... We went through with the closing ceremony and received our report cards. Everyone was there. From now on, I’ll persevere and not fail. —Manabe Ichiro, primary school student, July 1944 This collection of diaries gives readers a powerful, firsthand look at the effects of the Pacific War on eight ordinary Japanese. Immediate, vivid, and at times surprisingly frank, the diaries chronicle the last years of the war and its aftermath as experienced by a navy kamikaze pilot, an army straggler on Okinawa, an elderly Kyoto businessman, a Tokyo housewife, a young working woman in Tokyo, a teenage girl mobilized for war work, and two schoolchildren evacuated to the countryside. Samuel Yamashita’s introduction provides a helpful overview of the historiography on wartime Japan and offers valuable insights into the important, everyday issues that concerned Japanese during a different and disastrously difficult time.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Refighting the Pacific War looks at how World War II in the Pacific might have unfolded differently, giving historians, authors and veterans the opportunity to discuss what happened and what might have happened. Contributors to this alternative history include noted military historians William Bartsch, John Burton, Donald Goldstein, John Lundstrom, Robert Mrazek, Jon Parshall, Douglas Smith, Peter Smith, Barrett Tillman, Anthony Tully, and H. P. Willmott. In all more than thirty Pacific War experts will provide commentary, employing a roundtable panel discussion format. The reader will hear from the experts on how history could and could not have been altered during the course of the war in the Pacific. With multiple opinions, the reader will be provided with an interesting collection of divergent views about the outcome of the war. Refighting the Pacific War focuses largely on naval battles and campaigns, including Pearl Harbor, Coral Sea, Midway, Guadalcanal, Philippine Sea and Leyte Gulf. While the main concentration is on the major naval actions, the book also delves into key island battles, like Tarawa, Saipan, Iwo Jima, and Okinawa, as well as pre-war and post-war political issues The panelists debate questions like whether the Japanese could have inflicted even greater damage on the U. S. Pacific Fleet at Pearl Harbor and how Yamamoto might have won at Midway and how such a victory might have impacted the direction of the war. The book extensively studies the opening year of the war when the Japanese war machine seemed unstoppable. Also explored is whether the Pacific War was inevitable and whether the conflict could have ended without the use of the atomic bomb.Vice Admiral Yoji Koda, Japan Maritime Self Defense Force (Ret.), provides the book's Introduction.

Book War Diary of the Commander in Chief United States Pacific Fleet April 1942

Download or read book War Diary of the Commander in Chief United States Pacific Fleet April 1942 written by Usnavy and published by . This book was released on 2019-05-28 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a modified version of the original April, 1942, Commander-in-Chief, United States Pacific Fleet War Diary. Beginning in April, Enclosures are no longer included in the CinCPac War Diary. All War Diaries are now submitted separately. Also in April CinCPac became an expanded command which encompassed all military forces in the Central, South, and North Pacific - this command was called Commander-in-Chief, Pacific Ocean Areas (CinC-POA). However at that time, the War Diary was still listed as that of CinCPac. One casualty of this change is the comprehensive "Summary of the Situation" outline format that had been in use, with minor changes, since January 1, 1942. It was replaced with an abbreviated 10-point outline form. While the previous Summary of the Situation and the current Daily Distribution of Operating Forces had at times been redundant, they had complemented each other. The new form is more streamlined (albeit less detailed), and makes the Daily Distribution of Operating Forces the War Diary's center-piece.

Book War Diary of the Commander in Chief United States Pacific Fleet May 1942

Download or read book War Diary of the Commander in Chief United States Pacific Fleet May 1942 written by Usnavy and published by Independently Published. This book was released on 2019-06-28 with total page 436 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a modified version of the original May, 1942, Commander-in-Chief, United States Pacific Fleet War Diary. May, 1942 - May continues the format from April, with the daily "Narrative", "Daily Distribution of Operating Forces", "Current Movements of Naval Units", and "War Plans - Daily Summary". Readers of the previous volumes are aware that the CinCPac War Diary is not an in-depth chronical of battle, as, for instance, the minimal information about the actual Battle of the Coral Sea confirms. What the War Diary does give is a detailed list of the ships participating and how they were organized. Due to distance and limited communications, even this information is not always 100% up to date, or 100% accurate (LEXINGTON lingered under the Task Force 11 heading for five days after she was sunk on May 8; she, and Task Force 11, were not removed from the diary until May 13). NOTE: This document has been altered from the original for publishing and readability purposes. Individual redundant page headings have been deleted. Empty page space has been removed. Typos have been corrected and inconsistencies eliminated. Geographical misspellings have not been changed. Select words in all-uppercase have been replaced with conventional lower case. Other than the above revisions, this is the original CinCPac War Diary, as submitted to the Chief of Naval Operations. The War Diaries were compiled to chronicle the daily operations of the ships and commands of the U.S. Navy. This was done for contemporary analysis and as a historical record.

Book War Diary of the Commander in Chief United States Pacific Fleet June 1942

Download or read book War Diary of the Commander in Chief United States Pacific Fleet June 1942 written by Usnavy and published by . This book was released on 2019-07-19 with total page 494 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a modified version of the June 1942 Commander-in-Chief, United States Pacific Fleet War Diary. This month continues the format from May: the daily "Narrative", "Daily Distribution of Operating Forces", "Current Movements of Naval Units", and "War Plans - Daily Summary". The last week of June is a bit of a muddle, with sections missing or duplicated. Spruance took over as CinCPac Chief of Staff on June 23, so this might be a byproduct of the administrative change. Also at this time the daily intelligence reports are included in the War Diary, though again this is done in a somewhat random and haphazard manner. This document has been altered from the original for publishing and readability purposes. Individual redundant page headings have been deleted. Empty page space has been removed. Typos have been corrected and inconsistencies eliminated. Geographical misspellings have not been changed. Select words in all-uppercase have been replaced with conventional lower case.
