Download or read book The World is Our Parish written by Keith Fleming and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2015-02-05 with total page 485 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of Canada’s most outspoken and respected advocates of internationalism during the early Cold War, John King Gordon had a remarkably eclectic professional life. Keith R. Fleming’s biography of Gordon explores the man’s many careers, from his start as a Manitoba clergyman in the 1920s to his work as a United Nations field officer in Korea, the Middle East, and the Congo. In “The World Is Our Parish,” Fleming traces how Gordon’s passion for social reform and humanitarianism led him to become a clergyman, a political activist, a journalist, a professor, and one of Canada’s leading advocates of liberal internationalism in the years after World War Two. An exceptional biography of an extraordinary but little-known Canadian, “The World Is Our Parish” uses Gordon’s professional and intellectual journey to reveal the confluence of liberal Christianity, social democracy, and internationalism in Canadian politics and thought.

Download or read book International Marine Organizations written by K.A. Bekiashev and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 595 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the last few years, the quantity of books and papers on the political, economic and legal problems of the exploration and use of the sea and marine resources has considerably increased. But the status and activities of intern a tional organizations related to maritime shipping, fisheries, scientific research in the World Ocean and the protection of the marine environment have not yet, as a whole, been represented in the scientific and reference literature. It would be fair, though, to mention that some general information on marine international organizations may be found in the Yearbook of International Organizations, Brussels, 1979; in Annotated Acronyms and Abbreviations of Marine Science Related International Organizations, U. S. Department of Commerce, 1976; and in the UN Annotated Directory ofIntergovernmental Organizations Concerned with Ocean Affairs, 1976. Voluminous informa tion on organizations engaged in problems of the exploration and use ofthe sea is given in International Marine Organizations by the well-known Polish scientists Lopuski and Symonides, 1978. Meanwhile the increasing volume of practical work related to the participa tion of governmental and scientific bodies as well as individual scientists and specialists in these organizations, the necessity of long-term planning in this field, and the perspectives of the development of these organizations, make necessary a special publication depicting the structure and many-sided activi ties of such international bodies. This book is the first one in which the most complete information on the main marine international organizations is presented.

Download or read book Tracing the Blue Economy written by Awni Behnam and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2013-11-02 with total page 102 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Forming part of the Fondation de Malte's LUMEN Monograph Series, in this text Dr. Awni Behnam, President of the International Ocean Institute and former Assistant Secretary-General of the United Nations, explores how we must live "with the ocean and from the ocean in a sustainable relationship".The interconnectedness of emerging global challenges is forcing a policy dimension change in the form of the Blue Economy as an integrated approach to the governance of the ocean and urban interface, revolving around the human dimension. The paradigm shift came when Elisabeth Mann Borgese - founder of the International Ocean Institute - viewed the situation from the seaward side, where a sustainable ocean economy integrates with and is inclusive of the Green Economy. She famously stated "if before you saw the sea and the sea floor as a continuation of the land, you now see the land as a continuation of the sea,"; the concept of the Blue Economy is an attempt to do justice to that genius vision.
Download or read book The Denuclearisation of the Oceans written by R. B. Byers and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2022-12-15 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the 1980s concern throughout the world was growing about the use of the oceans by nuclear-powered naval vessels and naval vessels carrying nuclear weapons. Many countries were keen to keep their ports and the waters off their coastlines "nuclear-free". Originally published in 1986, this book presents a worldwide survey of the state of the nuclear use of the oceans and assesses the prospects for denuclearisation at the time. It looks at the legal background, the practical issues and the attitudes and positions in different parts of the world. ‘... while regional efforts of disarmament and arms control are necessary, so are global efforts. At the same time, international legal norms, including the Law of the Sea, must be adopted and utilized in the ever difficult search for world peace’. Arvid Pardo.
