Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Book XXII recounts the climax of the Iliad: the fatal encounter between the main defender of Troy and the greatest warrior of the Greeks, which results in the death of Hector and Achilles' revenge for the death of his friend Patroclus. At the same time it adumbrates Achilles' own death and the fall of Troy. This edition will help students and scholars better appreciate this key part of the epic poem. The introduction summarises central debates in Homeric scholarship, such as the circumstances of composition and the literary interpretation of an oral poem, and offers synoptic discussions of the structure of the Iliad, the role of the narrator, similes and epithets. There is a separate section on language, which provides a compact list of the most frequent Homeric characteristics. The commentary offers up-to-date linguistic guidance, and elucidates narrative techniques, typical elements and central themes.

This book was released on 2013-03-27 with total page 370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the last decades, numerous studies about stem cells and regenerative medicine highlighted new therapeutic approaches to treat several neurological disorders. It is noteworthy that the current optimism over potential stem cell therapies is driven by new understandings of stem cell biology leading to specific cell fate decision. The objectives of this book were: 1) to offer a general understanding of signaling pathways underlying the capacity of differentiation of several types of stem cells into neurons, during the development; 2) to understand how those pathways are altered in pathological conditions; 3) to describe advances in cellular therapy that could be use to restore central nervous system dysfunction in pathological conditions.

Book excerpt: In a world of death and chaos, how can they ever hope to be together again? Lydia Jones is ready to spend the rest of her afterlife mourning the man she once loved more than life itself. That is, until she is offered a special position from the angels as Fate, the pure soul who makes the impossible choice between life and death over all the mortals. Centuries have passed since Luke Rogue had begun his search through Afterlife for the love of his life. Just when he thought she had moved on to Afterlife, Fate appears, ready to claim the soul of a loved one and bringing with her the demons of their past. Overjoyed, he wants to pick up where they left off, but Fate is less than agreeable to his intentions. Determined not to be distracted from her destiny by love, Fate tries in vain to ignore her desires for Luke at every turn, but her heart fights against her resistance. With every touch, every word, and every heated kiss, Luke chips away further and further at the wall she had so carefully erected around her heart, softening her resolve while chaos reigns around them. But with evil stepmothers and stepsisters, demons, and monsters, is all hope for their love lost? Or is there still a chance that true love can truly conquer all?

Book The Expedition of the Donner Party and Its Tragic Fate

Download or read book The Expedition of the Donner Party and Its Tragic Fate written by Eliza Poor Donner Houghton and published by IndyPublish.com. This book was released on 1911 with total page 464 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Eliza Houghton (b. 1843) was the youngest child of George Donner, one of two Springfield, Illinois, brothers who organized the ill-fated California-bound emigrant party that bore their name. Eliza and her older sisters were rescued by relief parties that made their way to the stranded travellers at Donner Lake, but their parents perished, and the girls were left to make their way alone in the West. The expedition of the Donner party and its tragic fate (1911) begins with Mrs. Houghton's account of her childhood and the family's tragic overland journey, and rescue. She continues with her life as an orphan, first at Fort Sutter, and then with a family in Sonoma and with her older half-sister in Sacramento. She describes the impact of the gold rush and new immigration on the area, farm work and domestic work, and her own education in public schools and St. Catherine's Convent in Benicia. She writes at length of the emotional scars caused by contemporary rumors of cannibalism among the Donner Party and offers full accounts of Donner family history as well as the background of her husband, Samuel Houghton. An appendix contains several documentary sources for the history of the Donner Party.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A riveting narrative of Wall Street buccaneering, political intrigue, and two of American history's most colossal characters, struggling for mastery in an era of social upheaval and rampant inequality. It seemed like no force in the world could slow J. P. Morgan's drive to power. In the summer of 1901, the financier was assembling his next mega-deal: Northern Securities, an enterprise that would affirm his dominance in America's most important industry-the railroads. Then, a bullet from an anarchist's gun put an end to the business-friendly presidency of William McKinley. A new chief executive bounded into office: Theodore Roosevelt. He was convinced that as big business got bigger, the government had to check the influence of the wealthiest or the country would inch ever closer to collapse. By March 1902, battle lines were drawn: the government sued Northern Securities for antitrust violations. But as the case ramped up, the coal miners' union went on strike and the anthracite pits that fueled Morgan's trains and heated the homes of Roosevelt's citizens went silent. With millions of dollars on the line, winter bearing down, and revolution in the air, it was a crisis that neither man alone could solve. Richly detailed and propulsively told, The Hour of Fate is the gripping story of a banker and a president thrown together in the crucible of national emergency even as they fought in court. The outcome of the strike and the case would change the course of our history. Today, as the country again asks whether saving democracy means taming capital, the lessons of Roosevelt and Morgan's time are more urgent than ever.
