Book Revival The Cambodian Agony 1990

Download or read book Revival The Cambodian Agony 1990 written by David A. Ablin and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-09-08 with total page 481 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This title was first published in 1990: Cambodia, it has been said, has gone through the most radical social upheaval and transformation of any country in recorded history. From the overthrow of Prince Sihanouk, who ruled for 29 year, in 1970 to the victory of the Cambodian Communist Party in 1975, Cambodia suffered massive saturation bombing and an unusually violent civil war. It is estimated that half a million people of the seven million total population died. From 1975 to the end 1978 as many as another three million perished because of the brutal policies of the government, and spurred the civil war that has been simmering ever since. In this book, the world's leading experts on Cambodia and the politics of Indochina address the major issues facing Cambodia since the overthrow of the Pol Pot regime in 1978.

Book The Mekong Currency

Download or read book The Mekong Currency written by and published by . This book was released on 1993 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Mekong Currency; lives and times of a river captures in poignant texts and intimate photo's the life of South-East Asia's mightiest river. Millions of people in Laos, Thailand, Cambodia and Vietnam enjoy its wealth of fish, floodwaters and fertile mudplains. The river and its people are under direct threat. Prestigious dam projects are planned, which will alter the character of the river, affect the supply of water downstream, and force hundreds of thousands of people to resettle. The economic benefits of the dam projects are dubious. Controversy on the value of dams rages both in the North and the South, as the wealth generated by large dams usually flows to urban and industrial elites and influential landowners, at the expense of rural communities. Liesbeth Sluiter, writer and photo-journalist, spent a year following the Mekong and capturing the portraits in this book. Grainne Ryder, water resources engineer, works with the Project for Ecological Recovery in Thailand. They ask the reader to discover the issues. Above all, they invite us to look at the Mekong from the perspective of the farmers and fishers, whose livelihoods are sustained by the Mekong, who know the river's currency best and value it for all it is worth.

Book Evidence based Conservation

Download or read book Evidence based Conservation written by Terry C.H. Sunderland and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2012-09-10 with total page 481 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is a considerable gap between the science of conservation biology and the design and execution of biodiversity conservation projects in the field. Science is often failing to inform the practice of conservation, which remains largely experience-based. The main reason is the poor accessibility of evidence on the effectiveness of different interventions. This is the basis for this book adopting an 'evidence-based approach', modelled on the systematic reviews used in health sciences and now being applied to many policy arenas. Evidence-based Conservation brings together a series of case studies, written by field practitioners, that provides the evidence-base for evaluating how effective conservation and poverty alleviation strategies can be better implemented. A series of systematic reviews uses experiences and data from fifteen integrated conservation and development projects conducted in the Lower Mekong region, specifically in Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia. They provide wide-ranging overviews of the effectiveness of protected areas and how innovative tools and methods for monitoring and evaluation can be utilised for more effective outcomes. Results are in the form of management and policy recommendations, based on the quality of evidence and the cost-utility of the intervention. By bridging the gap between field practice and conservation, the analysis should lead to more effective integrated conservation and development interventions. The book represents one of the first attempts to apply the evidence-based approach to conservation and development.

Book Water and Power

Download or read book Water and Power written by Mart A. Stewart and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-12-12 with total page 370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book brings together a talented international group of scholars, policy practitioners, and NGO professionals that explores a range of issues relating to environmental, developmental, and governing challenges on the Mekong, one of the world’s greatest rivers and, alas, one of the most endangered. The book is divided into three sections devoted in turn to historical perspectives on the Lower Mekong Basin. Issues relate to livelihood strategies, environmental threats, and adaptation strategies; and various aspects of river governance, with individual authors treating questions of governance at different levels of refraction and in different registers. The result is a fresh and innovative collection of essays, which, taken together, provide much-needed new perspectives on some of the most important and seemingly intractable environmental and development issues in contemporary Asia.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hawaiian Plant Life has been written with both the layperson and professional interested in Hawai‘i’s natural history and flora in mind. In addition to significant text describing landforms and vegetation, the evolution of Hawaiian flora, and the conservation of native species, the book includes almost 875 color photographs illustrating nearly two-thirds of native Hawaiian plant species as well as a concise description of each genus and species shown. The work can be used either as a stand-alone reference or as a companion to the two-volume Manual of the Flowering Plants of Hawai‘i. Learning more about threatened and endangered plants is essential to conserving them, and there is no more endangered flora in the world today than that of the Hawaiian Islands. Striking species complexes such as the silverswords and the remarkable lobeliads represent unique stories of adaptive radiation that make the Hawai‘i a living laboratory for evolution. Public appreciation for Hawaiian biodiversity requires outreach and education that will determine the future conservation of this rich heritage, and Hawaiian Plant Life has been designed to help fill that need.
