Book The Amazing Language of Medicine

Download or read book The Amazing Language of Medicine written by Robert B. Taylor and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-01-23 with total page 249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book tells the intriguing and often colorful stories of the medical words we use. The origins of clinical and scientific terms can be found in Greek and Latin myths, in places such as jungles of Uganda and the islands of the Aegean Sea, in the names of medicine’s giants such as Hippocrates and Osler, and in some truly unlikely sources. In this book you will learn the answers to questions such as: • What disease was named for an American space flight? • Do you know the echoic word for elephantine rumbling of the bowels? • What drug name was determined by drawing chemists’ notes out of a hat? • What are surfer’s eye, clam digger’s itch, and hide porter’s disease? This book can give you new insights into the terms we use every day in the clinic, hospital, and laboratory. Knowing a word’s history assists in understanding not only what it means, but also some of the connotative subtleties of terms used in diagnosis and treatment. The Amazing Language of Medicine is intended for the enrichment of physicians, other health professionals, students, and anyone involved in clinical care and medical science.

Book Discourses of Vision in Nineteenth Century Britain

Download or read book Discourses of Vision in Nineteenth Century Britain written by Jonathan Potter and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-09-22 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers an innovative reassessment of the way Victorians thought and wrote about visual experience. It argues that new visual technologies gave expression to new ways of seeing, using these to uncover the visual discourses that facilitated, informed and shaped the way people conceptualised and articulated visual experience. In doing so, the book reconsiders literary and non-fiction works by well-known authors including George Eliot, Charles Dickens, G.H. Lewes, Max Nordau, Herbert Spencer, and Joseph Conrad, as well as shedding light on less-known works drawn from the periodical press. By revealing the discourses that formed around visual technologies, the book challenges and builds upon existing scholarship to provide a powerful new model by which to understand how the Victorians experienced, conceptualised, and wrote about vision.

Book Sketches of the Nineteenth Century

Download or read book Sketches of the Nineteenth Century written by Martina Lauster and published by Palgrave MacMillan. This book was released on 2007-05-02 with total page 392 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This new study discusses the visual and verbal city sketches which proliferated during the 'journalistic revolution' of the 1830s and 1840s. English, French and German/Austrian illustrated serials illuminate the pivotal position of sketches in the nineteenth-century culture of knowledge and entertainment. Martina Lauster demonstrates how, as a dynamic form of cognition, sketches transformed models of visual and printed media (panorama and encyclopaedia) and of life science (physiology) into a unique kind of sociology, presenting a self-critique of the middle class on the brink of industrial modernity.

Book The Psychology of Humor

Download or read book The Psychology of Humor written by Jeffrey H Goldstein and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 317 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Psychology of Humor: Theoretical Perspectives and Empirical Issues examines theoretical perspectives and empirical issues concerning the psychology of humor. Theoretical views of humor range from the physiological to the sociological and anthropological. The relations between humor, laughter, and smiling are considered, along with the connection between collative variables and arousal. Comprised of 13 chapters, this book begins with an introduction to the history of thought and major theoretical issues on humor, followed by a description of models of different aspects of humor. The next section deals with empirical issues in which selected research areas are given detailed attention. The relations between humor, laughter, and smiling, on the one hand, and collative variables and arousal, on the other, are analyzed. Subsequent chapters explore the cognitive origins of incongruity humor by comparing fantasy assimilation and reality assimilation; a two-stage model for the appreciation of jokes and cartoons; and the social functions and physiological correlates of humor. The relationship between arousal potential and funniness of jokes is also explored, together with humor judgments as a function of reference groups and identification classes. The final chapter presents an annotated bibliography of published papers on humor in the research literature and an analysis of trends between 1900 and 1971. This monograph will be of interest to psychologists, sociologists, anthropologists, and behavioral scientists.

Book The Humour Of Pride And Prejudice

Download or read book The Humour Of Pride And Prejudice written by Michael Kellner and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2005-02-27 with total page 16 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seminar paper from the year 2005 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Literature, grade: 2, University of Kassel, language: English, abstract: „Humour is the quality of being amusing or comic: (...) the ability to appreciate things, situations or people that are comic; the ability to be amused: (...)” (Oxford Advanced Learner’s Dictionary 1995). In Latin the word “humour” stands for moisture. In the ancient world it was meant as the right and healthy condition of body fluids. But nowadays it is a well known element of Art, especially of literature. The need of people to get entertained in a humoristic way is placed in nearly all epochs of mankind. Humour can be distinguished between “clean” variants and “dark” humoristic styles like satire, irony, parody or even sarcasm. A well known example is the so called black humour. Individual views or interpretations of humour depend on different nations, social classes, or mentality. For example England is famous for the English Humour, which can be compared with the “dark” sides of humour (Encarta Enzyklopädie 2003). Jane Austen is a representative for the English humoristic style.
