Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Classic Book Reviews and Timely Stories By: Charles J. Scott We all want to learn from perceptive, intelligent, and experienced individuals we admire so that we may live better lives ourselves. Obviously, we need good guidance and a positive influence on our thought processes for this purpose. That's why we read great books from knowledgeable sources and listen to our role models. Because he likes to reflect on the books he has read and incorporate the favorable impressions they have made on him into his daily activities, author Charles Scott developed the habit of writing a series of book reviews and short stories to commemorate the occasion. The reviews have provided him with a diving platform, or a jumping-off point of departure, for making sound decisions and evaluating his actions. Consequently, the resulting stories represent a celebration of the life and times in which he has lived. They are meant to celebrate humanity in an otherwise uncertain world throughout the ages.

Download or read book One Last Kiss written by Michael W. Cuneo and published by Macmillan. This book was released on 2012-07-31 with total page 209 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: FROM ADULTERY... Ex-Marine and bodyguard Chris Coleman was a family man with a secret: He wanted to leave his wife for another woman, Tara Lintz. But as head of security for the world-famous Joyce Meyer Ministries—an evangelical organization that frowns on divorce—Coleman had to make other plans. TO MURDER... On May 5, 2009, Illinois police received a call from Coleman, who claimed he was unable to contact his family. When investigators arrived at his home, they found Coleman's wife and two sons strangled in bed. Across the walls, spray-painted in red, were various obscenities—the word punished among them. TO LIFE—OR DEATH. Who could have done something so sinister? As Coleman played the part of a grieving husband, forensic evidence at the crime scene told a different story. Key testimony from Lintz afforded yet more evidence of Coleman's guilt—and soon a jury would find him guilty of three counts of murder in the first degree.
Download or read book Desperadoes of the Ozarks written by Larry Wood and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2011-09-29 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The award-winning author of The Two Civil War Battles of Newtonia “mine[s] the rich vein of bad men—and succeeds because of solid research.” —Fred Pfitser, editor, Ozarks Mountaineer This collection of events carries readers through an era of bootlegging, highway robbery, and vigilante courts. From the cow town of Baxter Springs, Kansas, to the booming mining camp of Granby, Missouri, the Ozarks were a magnet for lawlessness. Though some stories contain gory details, the author’s intention in narrating these events is not to pay tribute to the likes of the Tri-State Terror, Bloody Britton, or the Missouri Kid. Instead Larry Wood aspires to come to terms with the region’s violent past, learn from it, and move forward. Among tales of desperate characters and brutal murders is a strengthening of law and order. As the area’s criminals wreak havoc, the Ozarks become the staging area for the last public hanging in the United States and the FBI’s first killing of a criminal. Each chapter is filled with the grisly excitement of flying bullets and mob lynchings as vengeance is dealt by the betrayed, but the book also captures the changes made to protect law-abiding citizens. “Full of damnable acts, but they make for some darn interesting reading.” —HistoryNet
Download or read book A Double Murder in Eastern Ohio written by D. J. Cotten and published by Page Publishing Inc. This book was released on 2019-09-03 with total page 106 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book deals with the criminal mind and why some people do the things they do. It is mostly about psychology and why some people turn out to be self-centered egomaniacs not caring for others as long as they get their gratification such as the two sons of a woman who wanted her to sign everything she has over to them and then be interned in some nursing home where she would most probably be abused by stall members not to mention the negligence. A month and half earlier, she suffered a debilitating stroke, but neither one of her sons came to see her in the hospital and never once called her to find out how she was. As the two sons were growing up, she and her husband became increasingly disappointed in them. The woman prayed for then to become less self-centered, but to no avail. She eventually became an atheist as did her husband. Another subject the book deals with is obsession and how it motivates some people do bodily harm as well as perpetrating murder. Finally, it deals with why some people act the way they do due to their upbringing such as why a nurse turned on her mother because her mother favored her older sister.

Download or read book A History of the Ozarks Volume 2 written by Brooks Blevins and published by University of Illinois Press. This book was released on 2019-09-30 with total page 463 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Ozarks of the mid-1800s was a land of divisions. The uplands and its people inhabited a geographic and cultural borderland straddling Midwest and west, North and South, frontier and civilization, and secessionist and Unionist. As civil war raged across the region, neighbor turned against neighbor, unleashing a generation of animus and violence that lasted long after 1865. The second volume of Brooks Blevins's history begins with the region's distinctive relationship to slavery. Largely unsuitable for plantation farming, the Ozarks used enslaved persons on a smaller scale or, in some places, not at all. Blevins moves on to the devastating Civil War years where the dehumanizing, personal nature of Ozark conflict was made uglier by the predations of marching armies and criminal gangs. Blending personal stories with a wide narrative scope, he examines how civilians and soldiers alike experienced the war, from brutal partisan warfare to ill-advised refugee policies to women's struggles to safeguard farms and stay alive in an atmosphere of constant danger. The war stunted the region's growth, delaying the development of Ozarks society and the processes of physical, economic, and social reconstruction. More and more, striving uplanders dedicated to modernization fought an image of the Ozarks as a land of mountaineers and hillbillies hostile to the idea of progress. Yet the dawn of the twentieth century saw the uplands emerge as an increasingly uniform culture forged, for better and worse, in the tumult of a conflicted era.

Download or read book No Body Homicides written by Mark Stobbe and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-05-05 with total page 205 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: No-Body Homicides: The Evolution of Investigation and Prosecution examines how police and prosecutors have become more successful in obtaining convictions for homicide when the remains of the victim are unavailable as evidence. Based on an examination of over 600 cases in the United States and Canada, this book shows the length some killers will go to avoid punishment and the determination of police and prosecutors to bring them to justice. For over 300 years, murderers in the United States and Canada could avoid prosecution by successfully disposing of the body of their victim. No-Body Homicides provides the reader with a historical overview of prosecutions in which a killer destroyed or hid the body of the victim. It explains why prosecutions were once extremely rare, and how legal, attitudinal, and technical changes have made them more common. The book also explores how the logic of no-body homicide prosecutions differs from body-present homicides. It allows police and prosecutors to draw on the accumulated experience of hundreds of prosecutions. For criminology students, it provides fascinating insights into the process of investigating and prosecuting homicides – as well as a glimpse into the motivations and practices of killers who are so determined to avoid punishment that they remove the bodies of their victims. No-Body Homicides will be of practical interest to police or prosecutors confronted with a missing person’s case that could be sinister. It is also written to be appropriate as a supplementary text in an undergraduate criminology class or for an aficionado of “True Crime.”
