Book Tracer Experiments with Ozone as Oxidizing Agent in Aqueous Solution

Download or read book Tracer Experiments with Ozone as Oxidizing Agent in Aqueous Solution written by James H. Espenson and published by . This book was released on 1965 with total page 23 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When ozone reacts with sulfur dioxide in aqueous acid solution, as many as two ozone-oxygens appear in each product sulfate ion. Corresponding to this excess transfer (only one O being required for the oxidation), the oxygen formed is found to have undergone exchange with the solvent. In alkaline solution, transfer in excess of one O for each sulfite ion is observed and some of the sulfate oxygen is derived from the solvent despite the fact that sulfite ion is not a labile species under these conditions. Ozone induces exchange between sulfate ion and water both in alkaline and acidic solution, but the reaction is so slow as not materially to affect the results which have been described. By contrast the isotopic course of the reaction of nitrite ion with ozone in alkaline solution is simple; the nitrate ion contains two oxygens derived from the nitrite, and one derived from the ozone. Substantial ozone-oxygen appears in the manganese dioxide and thallium (III) oxide which are formed in the reaction with ozone of Mn(++)aq. and Tl(+)aq., respectively. (Author).

Book Sulfur Dioxide

Download or read book Sulfur Dioxide written by Louis C. Schroeter and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 359 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sulfur Dioxide discusses in detail the preparation and oxidation of sulfur dioxide. The book also covers the effect of the substance on organic and inorganic mixtures. The pharmaceutical application, safety, and effectiveness of the substance in the form of sulfites in food and beverage are comprehensively explained. A section of the book focuses on the physiological effects of sulfur dioxide in plants, animals, and humans. The book highlights the properties of sulfur dioxide in gaseous state and in aqueous solutions, with expanded section covering its ionic structure and spectral characteristics. Methods for determining trace amounts of sulfur dioxide in the atmosphere are summarized along with ways to identify the substance in complex mixtures such as food. The text is an excellent source of information about sulfur dioxide complexes and clathrates. The book will be a useful tool for pharmacists, scientists and chemists in the fields of medicine, and students doing research and experiment on the effect of sulfur dioxide on other compounds.

Book Biochemical Engineering

Download or read book Biochemical Engineering written by Shigeo Katoh and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2015-02-02 with total page 339 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Completely revised, updated, and enlarged, this second edition now contains a subchapter on biorecognition assays, plus a chapter on bioprocess control added by the new co-author Jun-ichi Horiuchi, who is one of the leading experts in the field. The central theme of the textbook remains the application of chemical engineering principles to biological processes in general, demonstrating how a chemical engineer would address and solve problems. To create a logical and clear structure, the book is divided into three parts. The first deals with the basic concepts and principles of chemical engineering and can be read by those students with no prior knowledge of chemical engineering. The second part focuses on process aspects, such as heat and mass transfer, bioreactors, and separation methods. Finally, the third section describes practical aspects, including medical device production, downstream operations, and fermenter engineering. More than 40 exemplary solved exercises facilitate understanding of the complex engineering background, while self-study is supported by the inclusion of over 80 exercises at the end of each chapter, which are supplemented by the corresponding solutions. An excellent, comprehensive introduction to the principles of biochemical engineering.
