Book The Eukaryote Genome in Development and Evolution

Download or read book The Eukaryote Genome in Development and Evolution written by John Bernard and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 432 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'The mind unlearns with difficulty what has long been impressed upon it. ' Seneca Reductionism, is, without question, the most successful analytical approach available to the experimental scientist. With the advent of techniques for cloning and sequencing DNA, and the development of a variety of molecular probes for localizing macromolecules in cells and tissues, the biologist now has available the most powerful reductionist tools ever invented. The application of these new technologies has led to a veritable explosion of facts regarding the types and organization of nucleotide sequences present in the genomes of eukaryotes. These data offer a level of precision and predictability which is unparalleled in biology. Recombinant DNA techniques were initially developed to gather information about the structure and organization of the DNA sequences within a genome. The power and potential of these techniques, however, extend far beyond simple data collection of this kind. In an attempt to use the new technology as a basis for analyzing development and evolution, attention was first focused on the topic of gene regulation, an approach that had proven so successful in prokaryotes. It is now clear that this has not been an adequate approach. Lewin (1984) has quoted Brenner as stating 'at the beginning it was said that the answer to the understanding of development was going to come from a knowledge of the molecular mechanisms of gene control. I doubt whether anyone believes this any more.

Book excerpt: Bones and Cartilage provides the most in-depth review ever assembled on the topic. It examines the function, development and evolution of bone and cartilage as tissues, organs and skeletal systems. It describes how bone and cartilage is developed in embryos and are maintained in adults, how bone reappears when we break a leg, or even regenerates when a newt grows a new limb, or a lizard a tail. This book also looks at the molecules and cells that make bones and cartilages and how they differ in various parts of the body and across species. It answers such questions as "Is bone always bone? "Do bones that develop indirectly by replacing other tissues, such as marrow, tendons or ligaments, differ from one another? "Is fish bone the same as human bone? "Can sharks even make bone? and many more.* Complete coverage of every aspect of bone and cartilage* Full of interesting and unusual facts* The only book available that integrates development and evolution of the skeleton* Treats all levels from molecular to clinical, embryos to evolution* Written in a lively, accessible style* Extensively illustrated and referenced* Integrates analysis of differentiation, growth and patterning* Covers all the vertebrates as well as invertebrate cartilages* Identifies the stem cells in embryos and adults that can make skeletal tissues

Book Functional Anatomy of the Vertebrates

Download or read book Functional Anatomy of the Vertebrates written by Karel F. Liem and published by Cengage Learning. This book was released on 2001 with total page 798 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book introduces students to the groups of vertebrates and explores the anatomical evolution of vertebrates within the context of the functional interrelationships of organs and the changing environments to which vertebrates have adapted. The text contains all of the material taught in classic comparative anatomy courses, but integrates this material with current research in functional anatomy. This integration adds a new dimension to our understanding of structure and helps students understand the evolution of vertebrates.
