Book excerpt: Winner of the New Jersey Studies Academic Alliance Authors Award for Nonfiction New Jersey's land records and deeds are unlikely sources for a thrilling tale but reveal little-known, fascinating history. A detailed story of the founding of the Garden State 350 years ago is preserved in these papers. The state's boundaries were drawn in such documents centuries ago, even if the authors never stepped foot in North America. The archives hide heroes, like the freed African Americans who fought for their right to own their piece of the state. And of course, there are the bizarre and mysterious tales, like the silk baron's castle and the assault against a sixteen-year-old maiden during the throes of the American Revolution. Join land title expert Joseph Grabas as he combs through these all-but-forgotten stories of the pursuit of happiness and property in early New Jersey.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: New Jersey: A History of the Garden State presents a fresh, comprehensive overview of New Jersey’s history from the prehistoric era to the present. The findings of archaeologists, political, social, and economic historians provide a new look at how the Garden State has evolved. The state has a rich Native American heritage and complex colonial history. It played a pivotal role in the American Revolution, early industrialization, and technological developments in transportation, including turnpikes, canals, and railroads. The nineteenth century saw major debates over slavery. While no Civil War battles were fought in New Jersey, most residents supported it while questioning the policies of the federal government. Next, the contributors turn to industry, urbanization, and the growth of shore communities. A destination for immigrants, New Jersey continued to be one of the most diverse states in the nation. Many of these changes created a host of social problems that reformers tried to minimize during the Progressive Era. Settlement houses were established, educational institutions grew, and utopian communities were founded. Most notably, women gained the right to vote in 1920. In the decades leading up to World War II, New Jersey benefited from back-to-work projects, but the rise of the local Ku Klux Klan and the German American Bund were sad episodes during this period. The story then moves to the rise of suburbs, the concomitant decline of the state’s cities, growing population density, and changing patterns of wealth. Deep-seated racial inequities led to urban unrest as well as political change, including such landmark legislation as the Mount Laurel decision. Today, immigration continues to shape the state, as does the tension between the needs of the suburbs, cities, and modest amounts of remaining farmland. Well-known personalities, such as Jonathan Edwards, George Washington, Woodrow Wilson, Dorothea Dix, Thomas Edison, Frank Hague, and Albert Einstein appear in the narrative. Contributors also mine new and existing sources to incorporate fully scholarship on women, minorities, and immigrants. All chapters are set in the context of the history of the United States as a whole, illustrating how New Jersey is often a bellwether for the nation..

Book excerpt: Elizabeth, New Jersey is a city of firsts: first English-speaking colony in the state, first state capital, first home of Princeton University, and the site of the first shots fired after the Declaration of Independence. This impressive history is bolstered by the town's production of the first U.S. Navy submarine, Singer sewing machine, and ice cream soda, but these triumphs should not overshadow the hardships endured along the way. With no precedent to guide the way, the industrious people of Elizabeth built traditions rather than uphold them, and for nearly 340 years this community has forged its own path against the landscape without losing its small-town flavor. Elizabeth: The First Capital of New Jersey is the uplifting record of the people who settled land and built homes, many of which are still populated by their descendants. Tales of the sacrifices of a rich colonial history lead seamlessly into stories about the Singer Sewing Machine Company, which changed the face of the city's commerce, and the Morris Turnpike and Central Railroad that form the heart of the transportation industry to which Elizabeth owes much of its economic well being. Presented in both lucid word and striking image, Elizabeth: The First Capital of New Jersey depicts the people, places, and events that secured Elizabeth's well deserved place in the history of America. The hard-working citizens who had the foresight to develop a diverse economic, religious, and cultural base for the "City of Churches" are memorialized in this new volume.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the years of working with buyer clients, we found that many buyers are unaware of what they need to do to buy a home: how much money they actually need (hint: you'll need more than just your down payment); how to determine what type of home they want or need and how to go about finding the right home. Our purpose in writing this book is to educate you on the basics of the home-buying process. There are many intricacies in the process and this book does not attempt to capture all of them. Our goal is to give you a solid foundation and, we hope, give you more confidence as you pursue purchasing the home of your dreams.Note: Though this book may be helpful to anyone buying a home, it is focused on purchasing a home in NJ. If you are purchasing a home in another state, there may be differences in the process.

Book Owning Our Future

Download or read book Owning Our Future written by Marjorie Kelly and published by Berrett-Koehler Publishers. This book was released on 2012-07-04 with total page 343 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A collection of company profiles that “succeeds in demonstrating how more sustainable business ventures can function in practice” (Publishers Weekly). As long as businesses are set up to focus exclusively on maximizing financial income for the few, our economy will be locked into endless growth and widening inequality. But now people are experimenting with new forms of ownership, which Marjorie Kelly calls generative: aimed at creating the conditions for life for many generations to come. These designs may hold the key to the deep transformation our civilization needs. To understand these emerging alternatives, Kelly reports from all over the world, visiting a community-owned wind facility in Massachusetts, a lobster cooperative in Maine, a multibillion-dollar employee-owned department-store chain in London, a foundation-owned pharmaceutical company in Denmark, a farmer-owned dairy in Wisconsin, and other places where a hopeful new economy is being built. Along the way, she finds the five essential patterns of ownership design that make these models work. “This magnificent book is a kind of recipe for how civilization might cope with its too-big-to-fail problem. It’s a hardheaded, clear-eyed, and therefore completely moving account of what a different world might look like—what it already does look like in enough places that you will emerge from its pages inspired to get involved.” —Bill McKibben, author of Deep Economy
