Book excerpt: Rehabilitation of brownfields, particularly those which are contaminated can be an expensive undertaking and requires not only technical solutions but the involvement of financial, regulatory and community stakeholders. Fundamental to this process is the analysis of the risks involved and the development of the appropriate strategies. Those need to be weighted against the economic and social benefits of brownfield development, to assess the general viability of the redevelopment. In most cases the demand for development land drives the process forward, while sometimes the rehabilitation is grounded on the wish to restore the landscape and the ecology of a region. This volume contains the proceedings of the Fourth International Conference on Prevention, Assessment, Rehabilitation and Development of Brownfield Sites that was held in Cephalonia (Greece) in May 2008. Brownfield development is in most cases essential to attract new business to the locality and for the creation of healthy communities. Therefore, there is a great need for deeper research and study of all aspects of the problem - technical, institutional, financial, social - and an exchange of ideas, know-how and experience among experts and scientists. The proceedings have been arranged into the following sections: Rehabilitation of Brownfields; Development Issues; Remediation Studies and Technologies; Case Studies; Risk Assessment and Management; Community and Public Involvement.

Book Brownfields Redevelopment

Download or read book Brownfields Redevelopment written by Joaquin Jay Gonzalez III and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2021-09-04 with total page 374 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In urban planning, a brownfield is a former industrial or commercial site where environmental contamination hinders development. They exist in almost every community--there is probably one in your neighborhood--and state or federal resources can be used to facilitate assessment, cleanup and reuse. Drawing on a range of local and international experiences, this collection of essays focuses on cases where citizens, nonprofits, developers, cities, and state and federal agencies overcame challenges and mitigated risks to redevelop brownfields using leading-edge practices and simple innovations. The Covid-19 pandemic and mass civil unrest of 2020 underscores the importance of health and social justice considerations in future development initiatives.

Book Tax Increment Financing and Economic Development Second Edition

Download or read book Tax Increment Financing and Economic Development Second Edition written by Craig L. Johnson and published by State University of New York Press. This book was released on 2019-07-10 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book brings together leading experts to examine the evolving nature of tax increment financing (TIF), the most widely used tool of local economic and community development. Originally designed as an innovative approach to the redevelopment of blighted areas, it has become a more general-purpose tool of economic and community development. Contributors offer case studies of the uses, structures, and impacts of TIF projects alongside more general discussions on the theoretical, financial, and legal bases for the use of TIF. They also explore its effect on overlapping jurisdictions such as cities, counties, and school districts. Some of the case studies capture TIF at its best—redeveloping areas that would likely never develop without substantial incentives. Other cases highlight questionable uses, especially where it has been used in new ways that those who developed the tool never envisioned. Originally published in 2001, the book was called "...a major contribution to the debate on the efficacy of such economic development financing tools as TIF..." by the journal Public Budgeting & Finance. Clear, comprehensive, and timely, this new edition features the latest research and thinking on TIF, including the political, legal, and even ethical issues surrounding its use.

Book Reclaiming Brownfields

Download or read book Reclaiming Brownfields written by Richard C. Hula and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-03-23 with total page 407 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The environmental legacy of past industrial and agricultural development can simultaneously pose serious threats to human health and impede reuse of contaminated land. The urban landscape around the world is littered with sites contaminated with a variety of toxins produced by past use. Both public and private sector actors are often reluctant to make significant investments in properties that simultaneously pose significant potential human health issues, and may demand complex and very expensive cleanups. The chapters in this volume recognize that land and water contamination are now almost universally acknowledged to be key social, economic, and political issues. How multiple societies have attempted to craft and implement public policy to deal with these issues provides the central focus of the book. The volume is unique in that it provides a global comparative perspective on brownfield policy and examples of its use in a variety of countries.
