Book Numerals in Early Greek New Testament Manuscripts

Download or read book Numerals in Early Greek New Testament Manuscripts written by Zachary Cole and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2017-05-08 with total page 283 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Numerals in Early Greek New Testament Manuscripts, Zachary J. Cole provides the first in-depth examination of the seemingly obscure, yet important topic: how early Christian scribes wrote numbers and why. While scholars have long been aware that Christian scribes occasionally used numerical abbreviations in their books, few have been able to make much sense of it. This detailed analysis of numerals in manuscripts up through the fifth century CE uncovers a wealth of palaeographical and codicological data. Among other findings, Zachary J. Cole shows that some numerals can function as “visual links” between witnesses, that numbers sometimes—though rarely—functioned like nomina sacra, and that Christians uniquely adapted their numbering system to suit the needs of public reading.

Book RTF Pocket Guide

  • Publisher : "O'Reilly Media, Inc."
  • Release : 2003-07-22
  • ISBN : 0596004753
  • Pages : 157 pages

Download or read book RTF Pocket Guide written by Sean M. Burke and published by "O'Reilly Media, Inc.". This book was released on 2003-07-22 with total page 157 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rich Text Format, or RTF, is the internal markup language used by Microsoft Word and understood by dozens of other word processors. RTF is a universal file format that pervades practically every desktop. Because RTF is text, it's much easier to generate and process than binary .doc files. Any programmer working with word processing documents needs to learn enough RTF to get around, whether it's to format text for Word (or almost any other word processor), to make global changes to an existing document, or to convert Word files to (or from) another format. RTF Pocket Guide is a concise and easy-to-use tutorial and quick-reference for anyone who occasionally ends up mired in RTF files. As the first published book to cover the RTF format in any detail, this small pocket guide explains the syntax of RTF with examples throughout, including special sections on Unicode RTF and MSHelp RTF, and several full programs that demonstrate how to work in RTF effectively. Most word processors produce RTF documents consisting of arcane and redundant markup. This book is the first step to finding order in the disorder of RTF.

Book Celebrity Fame and Infamy in the Hellenistic World

Download or read book Celebrity Fame and Infamy in the Hellenistic World written by Riemer Faber and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2020-04-02 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Modern notions of celebrity, fame, and infamy reach back to the time of Homer's Iliad. During the Hellenistic period, in particular, the Greek understanding of fame became more widely known, and adapted, to accommodate or respond to non-Greek understandings of reputation in society and culture. This collection of essays illustrates the ways in which the characteristics of fame and infamy in the Hellenistic era distinguished themselves and how they were represented in diverse and unique ways throughout the Mediterranean. The means of recording fame and infamy included public art, literature, sculpture, coinage, and inscribed monuments. The ruling elite carefully employed these means throughout the different Hellenistic kingdoms, and these essays demonstrate how they operated in the creation of social, political, and cultural values. The authors examine the cultural means whereby fame and infamy entered social consciousness, and explore the nature and effect of this important and enduring sociological phenomenon.
