Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The title, Figuring Grief, refers to the narrative process whereby mourning is depicted. In her textual analysis, Smythe explores various connections between representation and consolation. Drawing on genre and narratological theory, she outlines the development of the "fiction-elegy" as a sub-genre and suggests that the modernist writings of Woolf and Joyce are paradigmatic examples of the form. She then uses these paradigms as suggestive "reading models" for the interpretation of works by Gallant, Munro, and other contemporary fiction-elegists. Figuring Grief offers new readings of specific works and suggests that new ways of reading are both demanded and rewarded by a poetics of elegy.

Close Calls.escaping by the skin of my."Before we even knew what he hit, Arab men appeared from every nook and cranny. Like flies around a ripe, red watermelon, they swarmed around our car, peering at us from behind black beards and mustaches. Our hearts sank." Lodges.the good, the bad, and the ugly."We had certainly come a long way from the flush toilets.Chobi's toilet amounted to a chair that resembled a lawn chair, with a toilet seat on it-over a 'long-drop loo'.Actually, the chair was over a hole in the ground-and this 'long-drop loo' had a very short drop." Sometimes she's slightly out of focus. Oh Those Men. "The zipper down the front of my dress had more than one convenience. Pepe began demonstrating some of the matador's passes. When he wasn't looking, I slid the zipper down a little, so I could get a whiff of the oilcloth fumes (from my vinyl dress), as I slouched in my seat. I could nestle my nose inside the v-neck for a scent that was as welcome as a bouquet of flowers by now."

Book excerpt: A quirky, funny, and accessible blend of science and art that delves into the heart of Einstein's theory of relativity It was a link to his 1905 paper--an early attempt at explaining his revolutionary ideas on space, time, and matter--that drew Tanya Bub into Albert Einstein's imaginative vision of the world. What particularly struck her was how Einstein interwove words and math to create clear visuals illustrating his theories. As an artist, she naturally started doodling as she worked her way through his concepts, creating drawings that intuitively demonstrated Einstein's core principles. In Reimagining Time Tanya Bub teams up with her father, the distinguished physicist Jeffrey Bub, to create a quirky and accessible take on one of science's most revolutionary discoveries. Blending original art and text, they guide readers through Einstein's theory of special relativity to expose truths about our universe: time is relative, lengths get shorter with motion, energy and mass are interchangeable, and the Universe has a speed limit.

Book The Acts of the Holy Spirit Our Personal Journey

Download or read book The Acts of the Holy Spirit Our Personal Journey written by Chris Morris and published by Christian Faith Publishing, Inc.. This book was released on 2018-11-12 with total page 446 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Is God still in the miracle business? Did miracles only occur for the early church? Can God really do the impossible? Is the Bible trustworthy, and was Jesus telling the truth? Can we physically experience or even see miracles? Like most people, when I was young, I had faith in Jesus but scoffed at people who said they had witnessed miracles. Then I witnessed one little miracle. I was dumbfounded. I then witnessed another, and then another, and before long I witnessed miracle after miracle . . . incredible miracles that I had been told only the early church could experience. I wrote this book for my children, because I wanted them to have a record of the acts of the Holy Spirit we had witnessed on our journey through life. Everything Jesus said proved to be true. Our family is not special. We are not saints. We are not unusual. We have our problems and shortcomings. I suspect our family is not much different than yours, except perhaps for one thing. We pray for the Lord's help and believe His help is on the way! Jesus said in Mark 11:23""24, "For assuredly, I say to you, whoever says to this mountain, 'Be removed and be cast into the sea,' and does not doubt in his heart, but believes that those things he says will be done, he will have whatever he says. Therefore I say to you, whatever things you ask when you pray, believe that you receive them, and you will have them."

Book Closed Circuits

  • Author : Garrett Stewart
  • Publisher : University of Chicago Press
  • Release : 2015-01-30
  • ISBN : 022620135X
  • Pages : 304 pages

Download or read book Closed Circuits written by Garrett Stewart and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2015-01-30 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The recent uproar over NSA dataveillance can obscure the fact that surveillance has been part of our lives for decades. And cinema has long been aware of its power—and potential for abuse. In Closed Circuits, Garrett Stewart analyzes a broad spectrum of films, from M and Rear Window through The Conversation to Déjà Vu, Source Code, and The Bourne Legacy, in which cinema has articulated—and performed—the drama of inspection’s unreturned look. While mainstays of the thriller, both the act and the technology of surveillance, Stewart argues, speak to something more foundational in the very work of cinema. The shared axis of montage and espionage—with editing designed to draw us in and make us forget the omnipresence of the narrative camera—extends to larger questions about the politics of an oversight regime that is increasingly remote and robotic. To such a global technopticon, one telltale response is a proliferating mode of digitally enhanced “surveillancinema.”
